‘King Leopold ll was celebrated and now isn't and quite rightly too. We are doing the same in this lovely forum thread, questioning who we consider heroes.

We shouldn't elevate anyone to hero status that can't be demoted upon full reassessment of there actions. Would you agree?’

We can demote people sure, but I don’t think Churchill deserves to be removed from public discourse. Ultimately he was a British hero who led the free world against nazism and played an instrumental part in liberating the continent from tyranny. Just because he had some what we would now consider unsavoury views about Indians doesn’t diminish his achievements or his importance to British people and our history.

Was Churchill a racist?- Yes

Were his views common and spoken aloud in his age?- Yes

Were his actions in WW2 enough to balance the scales?- Yes and No.

Racism is not acceptable now although it’s so deep in the human psyche it’ll never be entirely erased. It has to be challenged, though, and by choosing a better path we can become better people.

I mostly agree. I don't see why we can't acknowledge both sides of Churchill.

Racism is learned behaviour. I don't believe it's deep in the human psyche. Children aren't born racist.

Racism can sometimes be equated with tribalism and that goes back until the dawn of time and is present throughout the animal world. I should have clarified what I meant, sorry.

Recognising it is the first step in stopping it.
