Phew you've really set my mind at ease.
It's a good job there's no sort of global health problem kicking off right now. Like a potential pandemic. You know, the sort of problem that certain governmental programs were working against until they were cut.

I was going to laugh at that, but they probably would believe it.

"Apparently, Trump slashed governmental programs aimed at combatting things like the Coronavirus.
I'm sure that wil work out well for everybody. " I guess it would depend on the size of cuts and how effective previous expenditure was. Maybe the same results can be achieved by spending less so no one has lost out.
He is probably trying to spend the national resources in the most cost effective manner . Have any USA citizens complained ? Maybe we should concentrate on sorting out our own issues and let the USA sort theirs . How they spend their money is probably none of our business. |

Trump spent the last 2 years cutting gov units that were designed to combat pandemics. The guy whose job it was to lead the U.S. response in the event of a pandemic quit and his global health security team was disbanded.
The CDC was forced to slash its efforts to prevent global disease outbreak by 80% as its funding began to run out.
The Complex Crises Fund was cut, a $30 million emergency response pool to deploy disease experts and others in the event of a crisis.
Maybe, just maybe, all these reources could have been a tiny bit helpful in the event of a global health issue. Just a thought.
And the fact global health issues are, you know, global implies they affect us too. just another thought. |

Ofcors cutting the budget by huge amounts and 100's of U.S scientists matters, trump has made redundant.
Trump is a sociopath & does not think about humanity - he is devoid of empathy
and or problems the world faces - only thing Trump is in love with is POWER
& MONEY |

yeah!!!! crappy things like "science"....
I mean..... just what advantages to do we get from "science"!!!
trumps had a war against anything scientific for a while... he doesn't believe in climate change... remember him writing on weather maps!!!, and everything from the whitehouse is filtered thru the guise of politics rather than public health and science..... |

Yeh science as a kid - microscopes was even amazing on that basic level.
Take science - up level by level - facts yes facts. All them years of experience to become acclaimed in a specialist area.
biology - physics - chemistry - geology and now climate science - using computers and powerfull radar and satellites.
hell we even had a british set of scientists landed a probe on an asteroid a few years back ! How did they do that ! ? Beagle ?

It's easy to hoodwink and stupify the cognitively-challenged. It's especially beneficial for those who are seeking re-election, from a base that struggles with the teeniest bit of complexity but appreciates having their jaded emotional baggage whipped up, particularly if it's against those 'others'.
Keep your brain sponge soaking up the lies and misinformation, if that's all you think you are worth.

Fertility rates are falling with general education. Particularly of women.
Look up Hans Rosling on TED.
China reduced population as a positive policy but it had unintended consequences.
A skewing of demographics because there are now significantly more men than women due to the traditional preference for sons. Female children were abandoned and aborted.
Every child is now commonly supporting two generations. Parents and up to four grandparents. This is going to cause a huge crisis in care, hence the shift in policy to two children.
We have the same problem here. An older generation living longer with more medical and care needs which a smaller number of people in younger generations have to pay for.
There are plenty of jobs but many of them in this sector are low paid and low status. That has to change. Not valuing those who care for people is an awful state for society to be in. |

Does she?
She's actually one of the few people who doesn't.
Criticise her for what she says and does that are actually an issue if you must.
Don't criticise her about things that are not true. It's lazy. |

I don't think she has. I'm pretty sure, and feel free to correct me, that scientists, business and governments have been working on this for decades. Then there is that Greenpeace mob, pretty sure they aren't new. Loads of environmentalists have been banging the same drum since before she was even born. She has not made one single iota of difference, just increased carbon polution. |

Some people don't like that the evidence clearly shows that the world needs to be making substantial changes to redress the global heating changes we have already caused.
Greta is a tower of strength who certainly leaves the sad detractors in her giant shadow, the bottom feeders unable to improve life prospects |

"But she does, the team she drags aroung, the media, the crews for her little toy boat jetting around. It all adds to the carbon footptrint. If she wanted to make a statement she would stay at home and do it all via skype, other media forms available, I'd be more impressed then.
Fair enough.
You wouldn't be getting so upset about her if she were.
Like it or not she has catalysed global change.
You can track it.You seem to think she upsets people she certainly does not upset me.I do think that you should lead by example though and he is right she would cause less global warming if she sat at home and preached from there surely you cant disagree with that?"
Seem to? Scroll up
If she catalyses a shift in public perception and action then if people trailing around after her generate a marginal increase in CO2 emissions the positive consequences will be far bigger.
Talk about finding a detail to quibble over |

I don't think she has. I'm pretty sure, and feel free to correct me, that scientists, business and governments have been working on this for decades. Then there is that Greenpeace mob, pretty sure they aren't new. Loads of environmentalists have been banging the same drum since before she was even born. She has not made one single iota of difference, just increased carbon polution."
You understand what a "catalyst" is right?
You have all of the ingredients in place but nothing happens until you add something to accelerate the reaction.
You don't have to acknowledge it. If politicians and business leaders do then your opinion is pretty much irrelevant. However, if you haven't noticed a change in attitudes in the pace of environmental legislation (with the exception of the US) and unilateral company actions since 2019 then you haven't really been paying attention |

One of the biggest influences in human behaviour was giving people free recycling bins and fining them if they did it wrong. Then it was charging people 5 or 10p for plastic bags in supermarkets / shops. Money talks. If Tinaburger grasped that , grown ups might listen. And until electric cars have a remotely sensible range and a price tag of under £25,000 no- one is interested |

Except they are interested.
Carbon is being priced. Finance is moving away from fossil fuels. Energy production is already cheaper. Electric vehicle production is ramping up, as are economies of scale.
The entire automotive industry is switching and heavy goods, trains and aeroplanes will be moving to hydrogen.
Everyone is interested.

Of course one person didn't cause this, but she has accelerated it. A of these people making the decisions have children. You are a simpleton if you believe that this does not effect behaviour. |

"How many working class people afford £25,000 for a basic electric car?"
I'll use the phrase again:
"Economies of scale"
As production increases, electric car prices will come down.
Annual running and servicing costs are almost nothing compared to a current car. |

There is definitely a nuclear power question to resolve.
I'm inclined to accept nuclear power, and preferably actually spend time money on much safer thorium salt reactors. Although the latest generation of nuclear reactors are also a big improvement.
Still nuclear waste to deal with.
Ho hum. Damned if you don't, amned if you do. Although it's the difference between dealing with a local and a global problem. |

28,000 since March 1st 2019 in the Hilux
Plus 4500miles on the MV Brutale
Plus 3000 miles on the MV Pirelli Dragster
plus 800 miles on the new (old) F4
and about 8k on the Toyota C-HR
I will let you work it out into a daily mileage but I suspect a hell of a lot more miles than you do in one year.

If you do more miles than me does that make you more of a man? What a strange measure of virility
44,300 miles since March 2019
121 miles per day
300*365 = 109,500 miles
Even more than your big, tough, macho manliness can manage it seems.

Wonder if it will last 6 hours on the M25 in freezing conditions.
Do they do one I can drive to Cornwall without charging? My youngest daughter has severe sensory issues and can't sit in a service station waiting for a battery to charge. It will need enough luggage space for me, 2 teenage girls, a 9 year old and wheelchair. |

Round and round we go.

Hyundai Kona £29k 180 miles
More than your big, strong, virole 121 miles requires
Company fleets will also receive 100% tax relief on zero emissions vehicles and drivers 0% benefit in kind tax.

Having to accommodate a wheelchair rather limits your car choices anyway, so it's a rather specialist comparison to make.
My purchase cycle hasn't come around yet, but it is a very viable option this time around. A plug-in hybrid would also help with range anxiety if you are a nervous type.
Are you doing anything other than trying to "win" an argument against me? What point are you trying to make? |

Not trying to win an argument, just showing that electric isn't an option for me. It is for you but you don't have one, although seemingly preaching that others should.
I can drive any car with ample storage and range, electric doesn't get close. I'm no where near the nervous type as my practicality means I don't have to worry. When electric can provide what I need I will look to make the switch. |

And as for these oft quoted ranges of electric cars ; everyone who knows anything about motoring knows that 200 mile range equals 100 if you are lucky in real world conditions. The whole thing is a con . Not enough raw materials to make the expected demand for batteries ; not enough charging points no matter how fast they are installed and not enough power stations to make the electricity even if the Chinese make them |

You do amuse me " As one of greta,s disciples i suggest you look at the damage lithium mining does to the environment you might start thinking differently. One of the side effects of lithium mining is water pollution: the process of mining can affect local water supplies, potentially poisoning communities. Yet chemical leakage is also a major concern when it comes to lithium mining. The lithium carbonate extraction process harms the soil, and can cause air pollution. There are also concerns around how to recycle it. Eco-nonprofit Friends of the Earth notes that lithium recycling is fraught, as the metal is “toxic, highly reactive and flammable.”

Trump has cut funding to research that would have helped test, track and treat the Corona virus.
Some of you don't like a sixteen year old girl concerned about climate change. You REALLY don't like her. That was quite a topic change.
The entire automotive and power generation industries cannot change immediately to replace a system that has been in place for a generation so it shouldn't be done and is impossible.
One of the more curious thread developments
What do you think about Donald Trump's spending priorities on international health monitoring and treatment? |

I can drive any car with ample storage and range, electric doesn't get close. I'm no where near the nervous type as my practicality means I don't have to worry. When electric can provide what I need I will look to make the switch.
I haven't asked you to do anything else.
Well done not saying anything useful then "
Why do you always feel the need to try and belittle? It is nearly always after you have been found wanting. Fortunately I don't care as it demonstrates so much about your character. You were promoting electric vehicles and I have pointed out, as have others, that isn't an option for many. By your logic it is an option for you but you choose not to use it. Shows you are disagreeing for the sake of it. |

"Wonder if it will last 6 hours on the M25 in freezing conditions.
Do they do one I can drive to Cornwall without charging? My youngest daughter has severe sensory issues and can't sit in a service station waiting for a battery to charge. It will need enough luggage space for me, 2 teenage girls, a 9 year old and wheelchair.
The first horseless carriage would have been a bit impractical and out of your price range at the time too.
I thought it was the younger generation who whined about not having exactly what they wanted right now
So there isn't anything then. A simple no would have done.
Do you drive an electric car?
Having to accommodate a wheelchair rather limits your car choices anyway, so it's a rather specialist comparison to make.
My purchase cycle hasn't come around yet, but it is a very viable option this time around. A plug-in hybrid would also help with range anxiety if you are a nervous type.

You have gone down an entire path of more and more detail to get to a conclusion which gives you a satisfactory answer but has no relevance to the point under discussion, which is incidentally funding for pandemic research and response.
I was simply stating that the situation is changing rapidly and the objections presented were quite solvable until you find some very specific use case.
Why you feel the need to "demonstrate my character" when discussing Coronavirus or electric vehicles or anything else says rather a lot about you
I did allow myself to be hugely sidetracked so apologise to the OP for taking up so much space |

Has it ever occurred to you that the reason the car companies are going for the bigger saloons is because they can’t physically make them for anything cheaper? Do you really think a car company chooses to sell say 10,000 units at £40 instead of 2 million units at £12k???? If they could make them cheaper and sell many many more they would . And as for batteries ... mining and irresponsibly disposing of out little AA batteries is a major problem . Mining for the millions of percent increase in demand for car size electric batteries is something the gretel TunaBurgers and eco loonies refuse to accept. Mining for all that extra lithium and Boron in third world countries then disposing of all those poisonous toxic metals will damage the environment as much as burning fossil fuels , if there is enough lithium and boron out there |

Actually, it's that economies of scale thing again.
You haven't got a handle on that yet.
You will see that nearly all new technologies are introduced on premium products. This is because the small initial production volumes mean that these components are expensive and more readily accepted on more expensive cars.
It is also possible to recoup more of the development costs within the higher margin.
As time goes on higher manufacturing volumes allow prices to come down and be affordable first as options and then standard fit on cheaper cars in the range.
The extraction of rare earths is an issue and the attempt to do so more ethically is leading to shortages as car manufacturers are committed to transparent auditing.
However comparing this to what has happened with respect to the oil industry with fires, spills, corruption, revolutions and wars and civil wars, obtaining elements for battery manufacture is not in the same league.
Battery technology development is now moving very quickly though, as is hydrogen as a fuel. |

Trump claiming that the virus is for news
The economic consequences are going to be even more serious than the medical ones.
I am also revising my opinion as to how major a death rate this will have. It is virulent and pretty much impossible to detect. The 2% mortality rate will still lead to millions of deaths as it will be global.
No doubt it is undetected in India and Africa right now where containment will be close to impossible. |

Based on the numbers, it does seem millions will die. Yet some people are trying to brush this off as being like a bad cold. Madness. |
