This isn't necessarily a bad idea.
However, this statement ...
"From teamwork to problem-solving, our veterans have incredible skills and experience that employers on civvy street, and indeed Whitehall, are crying out for."
... clearly isn't true. If it were, there would be no need to guarantee interviews, nor very many unemployed ex-service personnel.
Also, the cynical amongst us might think - given the government departments taking part - that it's just a ploy to recruit police officers, prison officers and border guards more quickly; and perhaps do their training on the cheap.
That said, those jobs are all suitable for ex-service personnel - because they involve doing society's dirty work with very little thanks.
Something most of them are already used to.

"Let's start by making sure all ex services men and woman have a roof over there heads"
Most local councils (in fact I think all of them) offer priority placement of social housing for ex services.
Propblem is there ain't no social housing |

Agreed. They government had potential to convert de-commissioned barracks like Howe into vetneran friendly accommodation however yet again the greed of the local council to sell it privately for student accommodation was inevitable.

This is a massive departure from the usual "fuck poor people", "fuck the young people", stance you usually take.
Weird. |

It's a good sound bite and costs absolutely nothing.
It sounds like your helping ex-service personnel but they should get those interviews anyway if they are appropriate for the job. |

I think that it is probably unfair to, necessarily, characterise it as greed.
It could just as easily be categorised as desperation.
Councils have no money because central government cut funding to the bone but will not allow councils to raise council tax because they will lose their block grant.
That way, whatever happens it's the council's fault, not government.
It's a clever trick unless you have to actually live somewhere. |

"It can only be a good thing about fucking time these ppl got looked after "
It is a good thing if it makes a difference.
However, if they would be getting interviewed anyway and getting the job on their merits, what changes?
It's just spin surely? |

Fair point. However, I think there is, at least, a shred of good intent behind it.
Certainly, getting an interview doesn't mean you'll get the job. There is a very real possibility that will prove the same for ex-servicemen as it has for ethnic minorities.
Once it's been up and running for a while, I guess we'll know for sure. |

"Easy you only ever talk about the negatives in any subject you must be the life and soul in yr local ffs anything that helps these ppl is all good with me god knows they deserve it "
You never actually talk about the positives though.
It's all about it turning out okay or hoping for the best.
This is absolutely cynical. It's a zero cost publicity stunt to associate himself with the armed forces and you know it.
As people have pointed out, actually doing something and genuinely giving a crap would be providing proper treatment for PTSD and getting those who are broken off the streets and into care.
Whilst they're at it, perhaps they could help the mentally ill and the elderly with proper care as well.
That's not happening though is it? |

Having served in the army for 18 years, I found my skills somewhat useless in the real world. The British army need to modernise it’s management systems to match those one the outside world. Not only would it make for a more effective force but would prepare service personnel leaving for life on civvie street.
Sadly the problem with the forces are the amount thick Ruperts in charge who are incapable of improving anything |

When you say "greed of the local council" you do realise that local authorities have been deliberately starved of funding by the conservatives and barely have enough to meet their statutory requirements, you are aware of this? |

He is not saying that he is going to do all of that. There is no such policy. The point that I am making.
He is also a liar, way beyond the scope of "normal" political lies. He has been sacked twice for it so even if he made such promises he's rather hard to trust.
It is not in my nature to be negative at all. It seems to be in yours to insult people personally rather than discuss the actual point though
It is in my nature to call out nonsense though. It is also in my nature to look at a situation as objectively as I can and if I see problems avoid them or try to fix them.
It in in my nature not to ignore them or just hope for the best.
Do continue discussing some other irrelevance ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

...and again I'm telling you that I am not and explaining the context of what I have said.
It has been spoken about, bit this is Johnson's "solution" in a shower of publicity. It has now been "fixed" and nothing serious will now be done. |

Just for clarity, it may not have been your attention to insult me but what you did do us start to discuss my personal characteristics rather than the actual topics.
That doesn't add anything does it?
When it comes down to it, neither of us believe that Johnson intends to do anything substantive to really help ex-servicemen at all.
Publicity about the subject is welcome but ultimately of little use if nothing is done other than "ensuring that they have interviews" for jobs. |
