How worried are you about coronavirus?
Jump to: Newest in thread
It seems to be fashionable these days to give every new strain of Flu a fancy name.
Maybe it's to raise awareness or just try to halt the spread by scaring the shit out of people.
Bottom line is that "Coronavirus" is just another (albeit quite potent) strain of Flu.
A hundred years ago it was the Spanish Flu. I can remember the Hong Kong Flu in the 60's and more recently Bird and Pig Flu.
All strains of Flu are nasty and for older people and people with immune system problems they can be fatal.
Whether or not this one will prove to be as bad as the Spanish Flu (up to 50 million deaths) or the Hong Kong Flu (around 5 million) remains to be seen but I think the authorities are doing a decent job so far.
Whatever, it isn't Ebola and it isn't an end of the world event. |

At the moment. it would not hurt to take a few basic precautions.
1. Wash hand regularly.
2. Reframe from making your fingers come in contact with your mouth eyes nose when out in public. or at work.
3. Was your hands after going to the toilet.

It's worth remembering that the Spanish Flu hit the world in 1919.
WW 1 had only just ended and Europe was in (to say the least) a bit of a mess.
Personal hygiene standards were nothing like what they are today. A tin bath once a week in front of the fire was about as good as it got for most people.
Add modern medicine and I think we are in a much better position to fight this one.
On the downside air travel has made the world a much smaller place and something like this can be very mobile very quickly. |

Not very.
Follow the same precautions as you would for avoiding getting ill from anything else.
The mortality rate is somewhat higher than normal flu, but at this stage that may just be because only the serious cases are being picked up.
Like normal flu it's those who are already vulnerable that are at risk.
At some point in the future there may be an outbreak of something really bad so it's good to see processes in place and that there's no hiding this time. The virus was identified and mapped very quickly and a vaccination is in work based on longer term research from previous health emergencies.
The bigger problem may be the economic fallout that comes as a consequence... |

It's a little early to know enough about it yet, as an outsider. It could potentially be a huge killer, even if it hasn't already killed most people that are KNOWN by us, to have been infected. I'm uncertain how trustworthy the data from China is, especially as it is having an effect upon their economy.
If the virus mutates and increases its ease of transmission between people, then it could be a huge, global problem. There are reportedly vaccines that are in development and I can only trust that these are effective and can be produced in high volume - we'd potentially need millions/billions of shots.
I'm not really anxious about it at present but I believe that we don't understand enough about it yet, including how it started. It would certainly be likely as a more significant problem for people who are more elderly, with health complications etc. |

actually since it is respritory... it is more like pneumonia than it is the flu...
but i am sure it will get here eventually..like SARS and bird flu (if this gets transmitted from humans to birds this thing will spread into overdrive!)
anyway... looking forward to me 14 days in quarentine, you can imagine it being spread like wildfire in places like sporting events... saturday nights in town centres..
heck they may even need to close down swinging establishments!!! ![](/icons/s/twisted.gif) |

It is now a Pandemic. 17 000 reported cases. Which means there are probably 100 000 cases worldwide.
I'm interested at how the disease is given a 2% mortality rate when official figures look more like around 43% to me. Not sure how this is calculated. |

two different things going on here...
in the world outside china there have been about 100-150 cases... but only one death so far (one person in the philappines)
inside china the numbers are alot more skewed, especially since they have basically had a 2 week holiday for the lunar new year! so the figures will jump |

They quoted 475 recoveries vs 361 deaths.
You can't count reported cases until you know what the outcome is. |

Official figures have 362 deaths from 17300 globally diagnosed.

I don't worry about things I can't control, and if I can control them there's no need to worry.
I do understand those concerned about loved ones who are at risk or potentially exposed though. |

You can't take numbers of those who have died from those diagnosed until those diagnosed have recovered.
At the time 475 had recovered and 361 had died. That's 43 percent mortality versus recovery.
Last I looked there were over 2000 considered "critical".
By the way Spanish Flu had s mortality rate of 2.5% and killed 50 million. |

That's not how mortality is measured though. It's not how many who die after being so seriously ill that they are admitted to hospital. It's how many people who die after being infected.

Well I was actually asking how mortality is calculated.
Logically, you either recover or die. Of the 836 who reached one of these two states 475 lived 361 died.
What logical deduction allows you to conclude that all the remaining cases will survive cured? Given the figures above you can't.
Your "logic" has lumped those infected but not yet killed as "cured". Not dead yet and cured are not the same thing. |

Well if I had my head up my arse as far as you I'd be able to see the positive and optimistic side of 361 people dying.
Sadly I am a person who feels sorry people currently suffering from this virus. I feel sorry for those who have lost loved ones to this. My heart is breaking for a cerebral palsy child who died because his carers were in quarantine.
So yes Costa we are very different people. Not only am I unable to be so self centred and self absorbed that I take smug satisfaction from the suffering of others, I am not able to be proud of such a character flaw as clearly you are.

I had viral pneumonianitus as a 14 year old. Because it is a virus it did not respond to antibiotics. They had also never encountered that particular strain before. I just had to ride it out. It was really terrible and as a very fit and otherwise healthy teenager, barely survived.
So viral pneumonianitus doesn't exist? Right. |

Will you still be so gleeful about this overpopulation solution if one of the fatalities becomes someone you care about?

Actually I take no pleasure at all from doom and gloom. I have over 300 verifications on my couples profile that describe me as a fun guy. But what would someone who has met me know about me? They must all be idiots. My last verification shows I travelled into London on Friday. I used the public transport system. Strange place for a pessimist to be headed when the virus had reached the UK.
People are looking at the mortality figure and saying only 2%. I am asking what that means in terms of one surviving the virus. Does it make sense to you when you are lying in a hospital bed being treated that your chances of survival have just increased because more people have been diagnosed.
475 + 361 = 836
So of 836 people treated 475 survived, 361 died. So clearly a mortality rate is taken as a percentage of something other than survival once contracted.
I'm no expert on how the statistics are compiled. But so far the figure of cured vs died is 43%.
There is a really good docuseries on Netflix called Pandemic which examines our state of readiness for a pandemic as well as what is being done. What is useful from that is computer models of how these viruses spread. From this you will appreciate that once there are this many people affected in this many countries (23) it is impossible to contain.
I hope your people come home safe and sound. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Here it is again... at this time....
427 deaths
684 recoveries
20630 infected, 2790 considered critical.
That's not how mortality is measured though. It's not how many who die after being so seriously ill that they are admitted to hospital. It's how many people who die after being infected.
Otherwise it's non-sensical Dont ruin it for him he gets great pleasure from being negative and pessimistic.
What would REALLY worry me is if you liked me There is no pleasure in people dying but you seem to take great pleasure in doom and gloom. The health authorities say the mortality rate is 2% and you try to find a way to ramp it up to 47% Why is that you should ask yourself. As for taking smug satisfaction for the suffering of others you should read earlier posts, i have 2 people very dear to me in china at the moment who are due back next week and im extremely worried for them.
" You obviously are oblivious to the fact that people like you spouting false figures are contributing to the racial hated and wariness of the chinese population in the uk at the moment. |

Firstly those are are the official death vs cured figures. So rather than just calling someone a bullshitter how about backing up your big mouth with some facts of your own. What are the correct deaths vs recovered figures then?
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Secondly people who direct their hate towards Chinese people because of this are stupid and ignorant. Even if the figures were false it would still be no excuse for such backward thinking. Don't put that shit at my door.
The latest count is 427 deaths 730 recovered, 20695 cases 2790 critical (13%). Do you think the recovery rate will improve as hospitals overflow? |

Probably but that's just human nature, it doesn't alter the fact that the planet needs rid of quite alot of us, happens all the time with every species, we've been immune from that for awhile but nothing lasts forever.

Not dead yet and cured are not the same thing."
No. Those receiving hospital treatment are seriously ill as a consequence of contracting the virus. This is due to a particular susceptibility or to another underlying medical condition.
However, the overwhelming majority of people who have contracted the illness thus far 90%+ stay at home with a bit of a temperature and then are fine.
You only seem to be looking at the death rate of those so seriously ill that they had to go to hospital. That does not indicate how seriously it effects the general population, only those with a high suceptibility or underlying medical condition. |

That is the 20630 figure that you are quoting. That's what the 2% is measured against. They have been diagnosed.
If you catch the virus, based on known figures, you have a 2% chance of death.
However, the reality is that there will be many more people who have caught the virus with minimal effect than died that are undiagnosed. So, early in an epidemic the mortality rate appears to be even higher than it actually is. |

Here it is. You catch a virus. You either continue to have it, get cured or die. There's three options.
The number of people who have been diagnosed is known, the people who have died is known and the people who have recovered is known.
This is not theory and conjecture. I'm not just looking anywhere. I'm looking at those three things.
If 2790 are in "critical" condition out of 20695 cases that is 13.48% of cases. If another 90% are at home with snotty noses you have successfully accounted for 103.48% of known cases.
Try again. |

Exactly. The 2% assumes that everyone in that 20630 will survive. Just because they have it and haven't died yet doesn't make them cured.
This is what I'm saying. The mortality rate people are quoting is making them think it isn't serious. Is that responsible.

Health experts issued an ominous warning about a coronavirus pandemic 3 months ago. The virus in their simulation killed 65 million people in 18 months...
I guess it would help Climate change though...
It already has. Flights from China cancelled. Jet fuel prices plummeting...."
Really? WOW! That means our flights to Alicante will be cheaper.

"According to the Chinese authorities, people who've recovered can become reinfected .
I'm not sure what type of "flu" this is but it's a pretty strange one .
I'm going for a global pandemic die off of about 4 billion, should help no end with the climate emergency especially if it gets getta
Will you still be so gleeful about this overpopulation solution if one of the fatalities becomes someone you care about?
How come you didn't see your personal loss from terrorism as population control?
Tragedy in other countries seem to be amusing to people here until it comes to their doorstep. .
No I think I'm just pragmatic over these things.
A 60% thinning of the heard is long overdue to be fair, no other species is immune to nature and neither should we be.
Is that what you say at funerals then?
"Culling of the herd is coming along nicely"
.
No I'm always joyful at funerals but with a tinge of my own sadness that I will never get to laugh with them again.
Oh so you don't go to the grieving family and explain the bright side of how the human race is better off? Was just wondering....
No that would be distasteful but it's completely different having an opinion on the whole without extrapolating it down to the individual.
All species have checks and balances and Nature always bats last in the end.
So you don't think that if someone loses a loved one to this virus they won't look at your posting and consider you cruel and insensitive?.
Probably but that's just human nature, it doesn't alter the fact that the planet needs rid of quite alot of us, happens all the time with every species, we've been immune from that for awhile but nothing lasts forever.
I think you missed your true calling as a grief counselor....
We over egg our own importance in this world.

Do you know how you remove butane gas from a cellar?
With a bucket, it's heavier than air, buckets are just designed to hold things in it via specific density to gravity, they work exactly the same upside down with everything lighter than air.

So let me understand this. You say something redicilous and unscientific. I repeat it back to you so you can see how moronic you sound and then you explain basic science to us because everyone is stipid except you.
What have you established from this argument? Hydrogen is dangerous as a fuel because you can't stick your head into an inverted bucket containing trapped hydrogen and light a cigarette?
I trust you haven't seen the video where a man sets himself on fire by using his mobile phone and filling up at the same time.... |
