Does it? Really? Or is it just that China is a country that can challenge the USA's dominance economically and diplomatically, whilst remaining invulnerable to conventional military force?
Against the USSR, the USA was up against a 'superpower' that hadn't the economy to sustain itself. That's not a problem the Chinese have.
I think the problem the Americans have is that - after over 25 years of being the only 'superpower' - they can't imagine a scenario (or just don't want to) where there are two again.
They are convinced of their 'manifest destiny'; in much the same way the Romans and the British once were.
I wouldn't want to live in China, it's a police state and 'Big Brother' really is watching you; but China's main threat to my way of life seems to be future inflation to the price of my electricity because my incompetent government let them away with it.
