Australians fleeing fires

...on boats to safe areas. Makes you think huh?

If Australia was where France is now and Australians were heading to Dover to escape. Would we have the same tabloid backlash or would we welcome them with open, caring arms?

Lights taper, walks away...

The widespread xenophobia, fuelled and fanned by the red tops here, is nothing new.

The history of Britain is littered with it.

Go back to the early 1900s and study the resentment against the settlement of Jews here who were fleeing persecution in eastern Europe.

MPs leading marches demanding their expulsion.

Same again in the 1930s, when papers like the Express, Mail and Telegraph were openly anti-semitic in their admiration for Adolf Hitler.

Or the race rows in the 1960s - the Bristol Bus strike, for example.

Climate change is causing migration.

Prince Charles was mocked for it at the time, but he made an important point about the role of climate change in the lead-up to civil war in Syria.

Low-lying countries, such as Bangladesh, are particularly vulnerable.

Parts of England, too.

No I haven't, I understood completely but comparing fleeing French from fire to migrants / asylum seekers that have travelled through countless safe countries before then boarding boats to Dover is miles apart.

The UK would welcome them, because that is the spirit of the agreements in place.

To support global stability you help out your direct neighbours.

The UK is now surrounded by stable countries, many argue because helping your neighbours is vital. The problem with Dover is not that they are french people trying to escape france, but because they are not french people, passing through france.

These people should be helped by their neighbours or go to a country that accepts anyone from anywhere.

Brazil accepts anyone, how many go there? not many, because its like America was when the Irish went to America, you get nothing when you arrive and have to work your whole life out so that your kids can be working class, and maybe their kids can make it to be middle class if they work very hard, but youre not getting free health or money.

This is what brazil offeres, they offered it to all of Syria, only a few hundred went, and its cheaper to fly to Brazil than it is to get to the UK.

These are economic migrants, nothing more, and their neighbours are not helping and it is a threat to global security, and Germany allows it because their population is collapsing and they are basically idiots.

Folks need to move on.

If the whole of Australia caught fire, GB, the EU and a lot of others would have emergency plans.

The GB plan will be the GB plan.

The EU plan will be the EU plan.

The EU would take in the most, Germany would tell them all to go there, they would filter through them looking for educated and qualified, and then tell the rest they will be spread around europe or sent home.

The EU website has an international aid section.

From 2007 to 2019 the UK was easily the biggest contributor to international aid. The figures are all there but as an example during the years above the 2 countries below have the following figures recorded as their donations;

Uk £68bn

France £18bn

Says is all really. Same for contributions to the EU. Some countries pay fuck all- zero in and get billions out. Some of the leading countries payments in are embarrassing

The last figures I've seen are 0.43% for France.

Germany does give 0.7%, but a quarter of this is 'internal foreign aid', money spent within Germany itself. They have only recently allowed this spend to be included in their foreign aid budget so that they get to the 0.7%.

There entire immigration system was actually designed to bring large scale immigration into Australia, this is born out by the fact they went from 12 million at the start of the policy to 26 million today.

"Personally I think we should scrap it and spend it at home. "

The United Nations set a target in 1970 for the wealthiest countries to commit 0.7% to international aid.

That target is now enshrined in UK law.

It always puzzles me when people bang on about the UK being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, then complain about being asked to help the poorest countries in the world.

I don't subscribe to that selfish view.

Yes, which means it isn't simply a policy decision of a department that can be changed on a whim - it requires an affirmative act by Parliament to change the law.

Hardly sends a good message to the rest of the world about "global Britain" if they rescind it.

Parochial, insular Britain, yes.

Conversely, Greenland has just recorded an all time low!

In addition we are in a solar minimum.

The period of least solar activity in the 11 year solar cycle of the Sun.

So we cant blame the sun.

Well you can if you like ...

"Personally I think we should scrap it and spend it at home.

I don't subscribe to that selfish view."

You really see it as selfish trying to help our own poorest of society and homeless first instead of people the other side of the planet.

Each to their own I guess

Anyway I didn't "bang on" about the UK being one of the wealthiest countries on the planet either, you sure you're not still banging that sherry back?

I used to have a fabulous map of the world that I bought in Australia.

An upside down map.

North was south and south was north.

Australia was at the top.

Europe at the bottom.

The legend said "who the fuck decided Australia is at the bottom?"

Or something like that.

Lol

Loved it.

Seeing the world in a very different way.

I lost it in a house move sometime.

And to say how much the UK still spends more than it brings in and has to borrow so bloody much I personally don't class that as being very wealthy either, I'm sure it's my selfishness shining through or maybe common sense, who knows

"...on boats to safe areas. Makes you think huh?

If Australia was where France is now and Australians were heading to Dover to escape. Would we have the same tabloid backlash or would we welcome them with open, caring arms?

Lights taper, walks away...

Your comparison is so full of holes the boat would have sunk less than a mile out to sea.....

You’ve mis interpreted my point completely...

No I haven't, I understood completely but comparing fleeing French from fire to migrants / asylum seekers that have travelled through countless safe countries before then boarding boats to Dover is miles apart. "

No, sorry, it isn’t.

Surest way to join the list of poorest countries.

Who knows, maybe Nigeria will send us aid in future.

Or Malawi.

No they were firth when ran by republicans in the 80s ever since then they've been losing wealth while ran by democrats.

California is a disaster waiting to happen, they have massive future debts in pensions and bonds while relying on 1.5% of the population to bring in 40% of taxes, it truly is the state of the haves and the have nots.

The middle class have packed up and fucked off to Texas long ago.

Maybe if we didn't have an nhs we'd be more powerful, or maybe if we didn't have to have a defence budget, or send money abroad, or have a welfare system that people walk across the globe risking their lives on the way just to get a piece of it.

Maybe then, but id rather not.

The United States is a union of 50 or so states.

The EU is a union of 28 states (+4).

The two can just about match up to each other.

The UK can just about match up to California.

There's a comparison here to the Aussies putting refugees in adapted tankers just off the coast not too long ago, as neither they or their government wanted them docking claiming asylum.

Different when it's white folks with a legitimate reason to flee?

Well it's three times as big and has 40 million people in it, vast mineral wealth, vast tech industry wealth, has the world's leading universities, massive tourist industry, gigantic agriculture industry and has always benefited from federal subsidies.

Oh and of course didn't do anything like as much social policies as European countries.

But again it truly is the state of the haves and the have nots, anybody that's visited San Francisco recently will tell you, it's not the most pleasant place to live unless your very very wealthy.
