"It's easy to infer sexism, racism and homophobia from Johnson's words. Plenty of examples are on record. Does any of that put you off voting for such a man?" Massively dislike the language and him! Up until the Brexit referendum we as a country had been making fantastic strides towards tolerance, integration and respect for each other's cultures. Then BOOM! The door was thrown open to any out of touch fascist to just start openly insulting anyone they've decided doesn't fit how they want their silly little england to be. We need to get back to being Great Britain again!

"It's the main reason we DO vote for him. Him and Trump are showing it's okay for people to use this language once more " It is bizarre some people think "he tells it like it is" about the like of Trump and Johnson. Actually, both men are incompetents and colossal liars. It's especially bizarre some people seem to think Johnson and Trump are "men of the people". They have both lived lives of rare privilege. They couldn't care less for "the common man"

It's easier to spot them and write them off and ignore them, everything they say and everything the stand for.

"It's easy to infer sexism, racism and homophobia from Johnson's words. Plenty of examples are on record. Does any of that put you off voting for such a man?" I have never judged people by the words that they use or what they say they will do. What matters is what you actually achieve in life. Johnson looks destined to become one of the greatest pms ever. Political correctness is irrelevant, it is achievements and results that count. Boris has my vote . He did a great job as mayor of London and people of all Nationalities loved him . The only people concerned about political correctness are white University educated types who probably do very little to help others anyway. The multi cultural population of London passed judgement on Boris and it was all favourable . Members of ethnic minorities are more than capable of standing up for themselves , the concept of political correctness is irrelevant to them.

But it helps us to identify people who think it's a positive thing to spout bigotry. Like you. Which is useful because then non-racists (everyone else) can ignore everything else you ever say. Also, free speech works both ways, it's not only there to protect arseholes. If Trump and Johnson are free to spew their out of touch homophobia, racism, islamaphobic bollocks. We are free to call them out on it.

He has lied to the people of this country. He made promises to NI then sold them down the river whichs he has no honour either. He has also used public funds to fund a US model and covers it up with another lie that is am insult to intelligence. But I suppose if stooping as low a human being can stoop is an admirable trait for then he must be the greatest PM ever. "Nobody has the right to shut anyone down on the words they say, the words they use. THAT is Fascism. Things have changed. We have Trump, Boris and Brexit now. The people have spoken. The snowflakes lost. We can and will say what we want." So far. You appear to be the person most snowflakey. No one is that upset here, except you. Here's a question for you, why do you associate trump, Johnson and brexit with homophobia, racism and bigotry? And why is bigotry a good thing? Also. You don't appear to understand what the word "fascism" means. "Fascism (/'fæ??z?m/) is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and of the economy which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe." I assume you're referring to the line "forcible suppression of opposition". Which you could also argue that discrimination based on sexual orientation, skin colour, nationality etc falls under.

So try a different label.....what about Macarthyism? 1950s America forcing liberal people out of work by blacklisting them, putting them in jail, terrorising their friends and families. Apparently that was not fascism because they were doing it in the name of the nation and fighting against communists in their midst. I wonder if you would have been in favour of that crusade?

"It's easy to infer sexism, racism and homophobia from Johnson's words. Plenty of examples are on record. Does any of that put you off voting for such a man?" I'm sure it doesn't. You've seen the excuses already. Others choose to ignore it. It is not usually directly racist. The language is oblique enough to allow for obfuscation, but the intent is clear, otherwise why say it at all?
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) |
"I'm sure that everyone I have asked this question to will fail give me a direct answer. Every reason from not having to explain anything to me, to completely avoiding the question. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong buy every single one of you or for you to say that it is unequivocally not okay. I won't hold my breath." It's disgusting that there are people on this thread who've 'okayed' racism (and any other sort of prejudice) by claiming it falls under the guise of free speech. And who then add insult to injury by pathetically calling 'snowflake' if anyone objects to this. 'Snowflake' is a ridiculous cop out thrown about when people won't, or perhaps more pointedly, *can't* explain exactly *why* they think it's acceptable to describe particular groups of people in words and terms known to be derogatory, hateful, and inflammatory. As you say, I would be very surprised if any of the Boris supporters on this thread have the courage of their convictions and answer your question relating to the use of 'paki', which any decent person would never do.

"Regarding "racial slurs" Let's use the N-word for example. Plenty of people use that regularly. But it's only "ok" if they are black. That is discrimination, that is racism. Everyone can use it if we're equal. I find being called a "boy racer" is derogatory. Most other people don't find that derogatory. It is all SUBJECTIVE and therefore impossible to police, unless you make arbitrary judgements. True equality therefore is either ALL words are okay or NO words are okay. It's that simple. Anything less is not equality " Why are you offended by being called a ‘boy racer’? What else offends you ?

"Why are you offended by being called a ‘boy racer’? What else offends you ? Of course, just because I'm offended by the term doesn't mean it should be banned, or called a hate crime or anything like that. But I think there's a serious problem when authority figures use such insulting and inflammatory language. It whips up hatred and distrust. And it can lead to real world violence. Anything less is not equality " Why is it okay to call me a Paki?

Everyone can use it if we're equal." Don't be so disingenuous and ridiculous. Are you honestly suggesting there is no difference in intent when that word is used, regardless of whose mouth it comes from? There is a wealth of information out there about its etymology and history but anyone who's not lived in a remote cave their entire life knows it was recognised many decades ago as a highly offensive and contemptuous racial slur when applied to black people by white folk. Does it not occur to you that its latter adoption by some black people might just be an understandable attempt to somewhat neutralise its impact? As in, to take away some of the power it holds and the association it has with the very worst kind of repression. To kind of *claim* that word for themselves on their own terms, as opposed to the hatred associated with it when used by a white person. Hence you find it is often spelled, in that context, with an 'a' or 'az' (plural) at the end to distinguish from the more 'traditional' spelling and all the negative connotations attached to the older version. Is that really so hard to understand? That when (some) black people choose to describe other black people by using the N word it's more about solidarity and absolutely nothing to do with racism. But when a white person uses it about a black person there is *no* other explanation except an intent to be racially abusive.

Do you get off constantly saying that word ?, wouldn’t surprise me if you were a blue collar Caucasian who likes typing the word “paki”, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. " I explained the point that I was making. Apparently expressing racist, sexist or homophobic beliefs is acceptable. In principal. It's "saying it like it is" and not being a snowflake, liberal and politically correct. However, as soon as it's personalised, it seems to be difficult to justify. In fact you appear to be taking offence that has been used to insult me in the past by people expressing their " right to free speech". It's something that I experience sporadically in the country in which I was born and brought up in. The use of that language is to exclude and intimidate me and people like. Just as other words are used to intimidate other people for other reasons. Yet here is a thread where a number of people are claiming that this is okay. I'm asking why. Is that a full enough description of the point that I'm making? You equate the word "Brit" as equivalent to "Paki"? Really? In that case, why are you worried about me using the word "over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over"?

"Dismiss me all you want My opinion can't be a minority / loony one - else Boris and Trump wouldn't be elected. Things are changing Hi. Your opinions are those of the silent majority. You have made the decision to back winners . Are all of you rascists then? None of you are welcome here From an analysis of the thread I cannot see any evidence of any posts on it that would indicate that any poster holds racist views. The only serious concern I would have is that one poster choose to repeat a derogatory and offensive term at least 15 times on the thread. That is of course his choice but it is not a comment you ever hear being used in day to day conversation. " Pat, your analysis is never that enlightening I'm sorry to say. You have said that the "silent minority" is supportive of speaking plainly. The word is not used in "day to day conversation" Pat. It is an insult used deliberately. All sorts of insulting words are being used more frequently because our "leaders" are creating an environment which makes it acceptable. Do you understand that?

"Dismiss me all you want My opinion can't be a minority / loony one - else Boris and Trump wouldn't be elected. Things are changing Why is it okay to call me a Paki? If one of your fellow countrymen called you a Paki would it still be racism? What country have you decided that I'm from? You still haven't answered the question. You have found a way to change the subject. It's a very straightforward question. Why is it okay to call me a Paki? I haven't assumed you are from anywhere. And I am asking you a straight forward question which you cannot answer but which would in turn answer your own question. Let us remove yourself from the question. Would it be acceptable if a person calling another person a Paki was themselves from Pakistan? You haven't assumed? One of my fellow countrymen would be someone born and brought up in the UK. My family doesn't come from Pakistan. Would somebody be using Paki as a term of affection towards me or as an insult? Why would someone from Pakistan call me a "Paki"? What would justify anyone using that word to describe me? Does that "free speech" make the world better? The abstract idea seems to be easy to breezily defend, but as soon as it is personalised, and it is an insult intended to be deeply personal, it seems difficult to explain away. "Why are you offended by being called a ‘boy racer’? What else offends you ? Because a boy racer is typically a young, inexperienced, foolish muppet who races around in a cheap hatchback causing trouble. I'm 35 and drive supercars responsibly. Of course, just because I'm offended by the term doesn't mean it should be banned, or called a hate crime or anything like that. I understand people are free to use whatever language they like and the same should apply to everyone. What else offends me? Feminism? Not a lot else really." This pretty much sums up how stupid some of this thread got. Gender equality no. Race hate yes. Some people need to take a long hard look at what's gone so badly wrong in their lives that they think politicians using bigoted language is a positive thing and yet people fighting for gender equality are offensive. No one cares who is offended. Being offended is meaningless and is not the point. Bigotry has wider ranging implications than someone being offended. And I am yet to see any good argument in favour of it, no matter how hard some people here have tried. Hopefully we do not need to point out the wider ranging implications of bigotry? IE, it's not the same as being called a "boy racer".

"The irony is lost on the above posters complaining about bigotry, when they themselves are being bigoted about people with different views such as ourselves. Who sets these "rules" of what words can and cannot be said? It's nothing but an attempt to oppress free speech in favour of leftie PC language. It hasn't worked." How many words are being suppressed? Can you give me 5 examples ?

So we can't call out racism because that's unfair on those who wish to be freely bigoted. I have to remind you, that freedom of speech doesn't only apply to racists and homophobes. It applies to people who want to point out that all bigotry is abhorrent. Also I should point out that not all non-racists are "leftie PC". We're a wide range of individuals. I would go as far to say that the vast majority of people are non-racists. It's so normal that we don't even need to specify. Here is a question do you understand the difference between criticising someone for the colour of their skin Vs criticising someone for what they say and do? Here's a hint encase you're struggling. One is a legitimate argument and one is bigotry. And again. I support free speech. You're welcome by me (although maybe not allowed by forum rules) to say what you like. What you say is a reflection on you and your character.

"The irony is lost on you as to why you feel unable to freely explain why it is alright for someone to call me a Paki. Any word is okay for anyone to use. It's that simple." My god. I don't think I've ever seen a thread as vile as this one in the almost 4 years I've been on Fab. You know full well that all words aren't equal. You know full well that certain words and phrases are loaded with extremely negative connotations and that their usage can cause not just 'simply' offence, but genuine distress, fear and intimidation in those targeted by it. There is no *need* to use such words. There is never any need or justification for them. *Why* would any decent person speak to anyone in such foul terms unless they deliberately wanted to express their hatred towards them? It's *not* free speech. It's racism dressed up in that excuse. I'd like to think that the people defending this kind of utterly unnecessary and provocative language are 'just' ignorant. But I honestly don't believe that anyone in this day and age can be quite so thick. Or perhaps some of those on this thread condoning it are nothing more than goady fuckers enjoying the scrap? If only that were true - it'd certainly be the lesser of two evils. Sadly however, it seems more and more racists are crawling out from under their stones lately. I believe the political climate of recent years, and the whole bloody Brexit debacle, has emboldened many deeply unpleasant types to show their true colours publicly whereas they wouldn't have felt quite so confident in doing so 10 years ago. And that brings me right back to the original point of this thread. When you have (so called) statesmen, world leaders and people wielding huge power regularly displaying racist attitudes it's small wonder that others that way inclined laughingly (except it's far from funny) believe their prejudice to be acceptable. Those state figures have a responsibility to set an example, never mind conduct themselves in a professional manner and they are failing to do that spectacularly. It's not, and never should be acceptable to use racist language in any society which calls itself civilised. You use it, you think it's 'okay', then you are, by definition, a racist. I guess at least we can see you for what you are.

"The whole cringy act of "calling out" just indicates such arrogance that the person "calling out" is morally superior and has judged the person being called. It's this arrogance that there is one way of thinking, one way of speaking that is fuelling all the Trump / Farage sentiment around the world. Stop thinking you're universally right, and that other people cannot use words or have attitudes different to yours. It's divisive and keeps backfiring. The more PC agenda is pushed, the harder the West moves to the right. Just look at the trends even outside UK/US as mentioned. Look at right wing nationalism popping up everywhere around Europe. It's all a big push back against political correctness and cultural marxism. Perhaps some compromise could be found where we all have genuine free speech. Hopefully before we end up fully back to Fascism." Utter bollocks. All non racists, non bigots are morally superior to racists, bigots, homophobes etc. That you think this is arrogant behaviour to call them out says a lot about you and your mental state. And defeats your argument that anyone can say anything. Effectively yours saying race hate is fine. But speaking out against it isn't. Non racism isn't "one way of thinking". It's simply the absence of racism. This leave lots of space for other ideas and ways of thinking. You should give it a try sometime, you might like it. If you're determined to justify bigotry and hate speech. You're going to have to try a lot harder. Because you're not making much sense.

I guess at least we can see you for what you are. . Nobodys used any racist language on here, maybe it's time to chill with the vileness Did I suggest that they had? No, I didn't. But I called out people 'on here' who have distinctly said that it's 'okay' to use 'any' word. People who've condoned racist language used 'out there' - by state heads no less - because it's free speech innit. Because it's not acceptable. It's what's going on in the big wide world that concerns me... the racism displayed by (some of) those in positions of power which has the effect of 'normalising' such attitudes amongst the more, shall we say, cerebrally challenged, or, to be more blunt, the *vile*. I'm not going to 'chill' on the use of vile, thanks all the same for that. I think it perfectly apt to describe racists and racism as vile whether you see it 'in here' or 'out there'. Jeez. . Well yes it's apt to describe racists and racism as vile except you just admitted you haven't seen any racist words used. Anyway my mistake I hadn't realised Tuesday was rant day. " You've chosen to completely (deliberately?) miss the point. My rant, as you described it wasn't about racist words used on this thread but about people on this thread condoning the use of absolutely *any* word, regardless of their loaded and highly offensive nature. And how that approach, as demonstrated by our erstwhile leaders, has the effect of normalising unacceptable attitudes like racism. I'm glad at least you agree racism is vile.

"All non racists, non bigots are morally superior to racists, bigots, homophobes etc. " In your opinion. Some people agree with that, some don't. The world is full of different opinions.

"The irony is lost on you as to why you feel unable to freely explain why it is alright for someone to call me a Paki. Any word is okay for anyone to use. It's that simple. My god. Hopefully before we end up fully back to Fascism." I am sorry but that is the most idiotic thing I have read on this outlandish thread yet. Free speech is not about people being allowed to say whatever they want because they think its amusing and “sorts” the men from the boys. We see this public school bs all the time from the kind of twits that think jeremy clarkson is cool because he can drive a fast car and insult foreigners for not being British enough - Bojo being a prime example. Trying to justify racism because its free speech is just wanky and a bit pathetic really.

If that makes me arrogant so be it but I'm not going to meekly shut up when I see something that's immoral in the truest sense of the word. There is never any justification for verbally or physically attacking someone or placing them at a disadvantage simply because of the colour of their skin. That's a simple issue of decency and humanity, and not something that can be breezily dismissed as having a 'different attitude'. No doubt slave owners saw themselves as having a 'different attitude' to those who condemned the practice and we have been left with plenty of historical evidence demonstrating their fury towards the abolishinists they too saw as arrogant. Still doesn't mean they were in any way right. Some things, like basic human decency transcend opinion.
