Increased use in food banks

A report was released by the Trussell Trust today.

Since the Conservatives have been in power the distribution of food parcels has increased from 61,000 in 2010/11 to 1,583,000 in 2018/19.

It's shocking that in 2019 we have such high levels of poverty in the UK. Some of the evidence in the report is awful. With changes and freezes to the benefits system being noted as a hugely significant factor.

It makes me sick to be honest that as a civilised society there are so many people below the poverty line. For each of the last five years come Christmas time I haven't bought gifts at Christmas, instead donating to the Trussell Trust.

Am sure some will try and tell you it isn't happening but I saw it every day when I was a civil servant and I see it everyday in my current job.

Sadly, it's very real. The report is sickening. The things people have to go through is horrible.

There is no poverty in the UK.

Poverty is starving, no clean water, no shelter, no food, no education, no nothing..

Most poverty here is self inflicted.. money for fags and booze but not food

That's just not true. I don't know if you're misinformed. But there are thousands of rough sleepers for a start. The very definition of needing a food bank is having no food.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with that about self inflicted, not in most cases anyway.

Some have a very real choice between heating or eating, some people rent substandard properties, which aren't always ten to a penny or affordable in areas of the country. I've also worked with people that found themselves down on their luck as circumstances or health conspired against them.

You can only say it as you see it. There will be some who need it, a lot who don't who abuse it. Unfortunately the lot tarnish the some. Near me the foodbank queue was massive at Christmas. It disgusted me watching people carrying boxes back to their 4'4s parked around the corner then waiting for their friends/ family members with their boxes to fill the cars up. Really sickening as there was no doubt people deserving who got nothing as a result.

And many of those rough sleepers refuse housing and help and choose to sleep in doorways and park benches . As for poor people - there probably are some poor people but there are significant others who drink heavily, smoke heavily, have expensive mobile phones, constant takeaways , Sky Tv, x boxes, and plenty of other paraphernalia then they are at food banks cos they’ve spent all their money on anything except food and accommodation.

I have seen reports of food banks having to ration help to 3 visits a year, and I know that the PDSA are no longer able to offer free veterinary care. Something is very wrong when charities in a country as rich as Britian have to ration charity!

It can't possibly be true. We have higher employment than ever.

Employment being defined as having one hour of work in the last week.

You've seen in this thread the disbelief that our country has poverty.

People "see" what you want to see.

They see the minority gaming the system. The minority is then becomes "most".

They don't "see" the poor. though. They are invisible.

Outrage always wins. The statistics and facts tell a different story, but that's not a story that creates outrage and anger. It's a story that requires hard work to solve, bit it's easier to blame the victim.

. The stories I hear working in a job centre it’s not easy trying to make Universal Credit payments last with regards to paying rent , gas , electricity , food shopping etc etc. Some manage their payments better than others. When they come to see me to request a food bank slip some are embarrassed , some feel it their right to request a bag of shopping then complain that all they are offered are supermarkets own brands as opposed to name brand when they get to the food bank. The food they are given is too last then 3-4 days and is basic food to last them until their payments clear.Yes I see genuine people and yes I see not so genuine people we are told to issue the food bank slip then it’s at the food bank discretion as from what I understand you can only use the food bank 3 times over a 6-12 month period

I’d say some not most, forget the adults, it’s the youth in this society that feel this more. They should garner your sympathy. Starving because their parents do not have enough money to feed them. Parents using food banks to get food.

Yeah defining poverty in 6th or 9th (I fact checked that) largest economy is different to defining poverty to say a third world country.

We are a first world nation so the baseline is raised higher for poverty here than somewhere else.

Most people talk about food banks but if not using them it will not effect there vote as people vote for themselves and there families.

People who use food banks are if genuine probably do not vote and the scroungers and benefit cheats will be better off voting tory to keep the food banks.

Yes - the baseline is higher. There are two 'traditional' wys of looking at poverty: absolute and relative. Through using measures of relative poverty we can examine the differences across society and who is in poverty based on a specific minimum level. I'd recommend looking at the Social Metric Commission for a highly regarded picture of poverty in the UK.

Some notable facts though: An estimated 14.3 million people are in poverty in the UK.

8.3 million are working-age adults, 4.6 million are children, and 1.3 million are of pension age

Actually if money is moved from the ultra rich to the poorest, the average wealth remains exactly the same.

Average wealth = total amount of money ÷ number of people

What does change is that instead of maybe 10 people getting ever more wealthy at the expense of everyone else, the money gets used for the benefit of everybody.

Do if JC gets rid of all of the billionaires he will also liberate the poverty stricken workers at a stroke...genius.yeah get rid of all the rich which then lowers the average wealth then all of a sudden the poor are not so poor so no poverty as usual with corbyn a race to the bottom to average everyone out.

Actually if money is moved from the ultra rich to the poorest, the average wealth remains exactly the same.

Average wealth = total amount of money ÷ number of people

What does change is that instead of maybe 10 people getting ever more wealthy at the expense of everyone else, the money gets used for the benefit of everybody."

we are not talking about moving it we are talking about them leaving the country entirely different things.

That's one of your triggers isn't it?

Just as matter of interest, what difference to someone's life if a billionaire pays another £10 million in tax?"

The difference is mate as you keep telling me they are all greedy bastards who are in it for themselves and they will just up and leave and then you wont have any of it.These people are fluid not like you and me have houses all over the world and can just up and leave at the drop of a hat.

Mostly we are not even talking about ordinary billionaires here, but the ones who make billionaires look poor.

I fail to see how any normal person can defend making tax concessions to people who already accumulate more money, per day, than normal people can earn in their entire lifetime.

They don't up and move for a marginal tax increase. The rich live here because they like it. It's safe and pleasant and it used to be stable.

I'm Ineos and Dyson moved without any tax change at all, so do we drop taxes to please the rich?

As long as the maximum sits below 50% more will still be more.

The question still is, does another £10 million make a difference to a billionaire?

You then present the argument as it really is, to benefit society not to "punish" the wealthy by taking a sum of money that they won't even notice.

Instead we have this shrill squealing about the rich somehow being "victimised" whilst a part of society is literally needing to be fed.

If they are going to up and leave then let them fuck off. But make it so they cannot suck any more money out of me and thee and everybody else.

At least that's better than allowing them to hoover up more and more and more, until there really is nothing left for the rest of us.

You are quite the piece of work.

Empathy is not a "thing" for you is it?

Some people don't cope so well when a spouse or child dies.

Some people struggle to take on another job with multiple-sclerosis.

Some people lose their jobs and never find another one.

Some people work all hours and still need benefits to survive.

All children don't get a choice.

The super rich don't have to leave. They could just, and I know this is a crazy suggestion, pay their taxes.

If they chose not to pay and left, other employers could fill the hole they left. Employers who might actually pay taxes.

. Not all some are actually working. There was something in the Metro newspaper about 6 months ago about nurses using food banks as they didn’t always have money left over for food. Also food banks tend to stick basic food like pasta , rice , baked beans , cereals as well as things like shampoo , shower gel , soap , tooth paste.

why is it when a nurse uses a food bank than say s porter or someone working in the kitchens or laundry in a hospital that it’s more upsetting for ppl I bet there’s a thousand carers or cleaners that need a food bank for every nurse

The Tory spending plans are as pigate as Labour for this election.

What makes one better than the other other than the Conservatives plan to reduce taxes and therefore government income?

Trickle down has never ever worked anywhere, because it barely trickles. The rich are so rich that they do not spend any tax reduction in the real economy. It gets "invested" in equities and other such useless toss that "makes money" for its own sake.

. I totally agree with you I guess when we see that nurses who a lot of people feel are underpaid are having a hard times making ends meet then it’s a free hit to have a go at the government for not putting enough into the NHS.The reality is it’s not just people on benefits using food banks it’s people from all walks of life.

Well I really can't compare derry to the UK. But I've lived, studied and worked in different parts of England & Scotland since the late 80's so I've a chance to see it from the outside over the years. Now its more divided and angry than I've ever seen it. Its divided by class, by race, age and location. The difference between scotland and england is day and night. Scottish Independence isn't an if, it a when. London is another world, the cost of living & property makes for a piss poor quality of life, 3rd level education is so expensive even with the bank of mum and dad. 2nd level education again is patchy and depends on location. The safety net is gutted beyond recognition. Outside of London, public transport is a joke. People are expected to be grateful for a minimum wage job. If you're poor in the UK, that's hard to change. If you're on benefits, its your fault. The class system is worse in the UK than ever. What I have seen is the rich are richer than ever, everyone punches down. Camerom was a smooth talking conman, Boris is a dangerous populist that will be no friend to anyone other than the rich. Then I hear 'yeah but corbyn' and think fuck me, this is like talking to Vicki Pollard.

I cant say what is happening in derry mate but where i live the uk seems a great place to live and yes it will be worse under corbyn.Politics follows the same old cycles labour get in bust the country and the tories have to tighten the purse string to get us back on course, everyone gets pissed off with that so vote labour in again and the cycle continues. This time with corbyn and mcdonnell if they get in im worried the damage those two do will be irreparable.Yeah 10 years of them spend, spend, spend will be great take me up to my pension but not going to do my kids and grandkids any good when they spend the rest of their lives paying for it.

Then I hear 'yeah but corbyn' and think fuck me, this is like talking to Vicki Pollard.Well mate however much you have a fantasy of me dressed as vicki pollard its not going to happen. Now been back in the uk a year and all i see are friendly people plenty of jobs advertised but must admit people havegot fatter since i moved abroad. You're getting offended, that's a shame. You make a point of showing your lack of empathy and regard for anyone other than yourself, Somehow I don't think you'll be missed.

Yes, britain is not the 5th largest economy and since the torys have been here food banks have increased dramatically since their benefit change to universal credit.

"They would rather have the latest phone and trainers than put food on their plates... Not all some are actually working. There was something in the Metro newspaper about 6 months ago about nurses using food banks as they didn’t always have money left over for food. Also food banks tend to stick basic food like pasta , rice , baked beans , cereals as well as things like shampoo , shower gel , soap , tooth paste.why is it when a nurse uses a food bank than say s porter or someone working in the kitchens or laundry in a hospital that it’s more upsetting for ppl I bet there’s a thousand carers or cleaners that need a food bank for every nurse . I totally agree with you I guess when we see that nurses who a lot of people feel are underpaid are having a hard times making ends meet then it’s a free hit to have a go at the government for not putting enough into the NHS.The reality is it’s not just people on benefits using food banks it’s people from all walks of life."
yep yr right nurses are underpaid but how much are carers in nursing homes doing almost the same job under paid then funny how ppl scream when a nurse teacher police man is underpaid but not the thousands working along side them it’s ok for them there only semi skilled or unskilled there the ones who will be useing the food banks but go unnoticed but one single nurse and ppl jump up and down lol

. Yes wages are a problem when semi skilled people are getting paid less than a skilled person in the job roles you have stated. With Christmas approaching the food bank will be even busier than normal especially a week or two leading up to it.

Like everything, there will be people that need to use food banks and there will be people who take the piss and use them when they don't need to.

The problem is how do you calculate the one's that need from the ones that don't need. Having just a lump figure that uses foodbanks doesn't give a real accurate figure.

Same problem with benefits etc

It's most probably a case of the small minority giving the majority a bad name or suspicion.

Simple eh?

Fresh food is expensive. Healthy food is expensive.

What is cheap are low quality highly processed products packed with sugar and fat and salt to make them agreeable.

Ironically food provided in food banks is of a higher quality than recipients can afford.

Happily few people are starving, because they can go to a food bank before that happen.

You are crazy, or just mean.

You have to be referred to the large majority of food banks. There are very few where you can turn up and just ask.

They have had food banks in Germany for alot longer than we have had here.

That will be the price of letting in millions of refugees....

I would be interested in how you came to that conclusion? "

Is this the return of an old favourite - tractors and trailers otherwise known as Pat? I wonder? Not enough “facts” being bandied about for it to be centaur but the right type of dumbass statements to be Pat - anyone would think there was an election coming up?

" I didnt realize corbyn was on this site.

Costa when every point you make regardless of the topic, is "yeah but corbyn" you remind me of Vicky Pollard.

How on earth can you ignore what has happened and still say 'could be worse, could be corbyn

Do as I say, not as I do I benefited from have a work ethic drilled into me by my parents when i was young following the money and working hard.Would have been the same in or out of the eu.

That's a pretty impressive level of self-regard.

No luck. No credit to world surrounding you. The situation that you found yourself.

All down to you and nothing and nobody else except a "work ethic being drilled into you".

Impressive indeed

Tell us about the country which you desserted. Tell us how to live in it and what is best for it.There is an old saying mate you make your own luck in this world and as for deserting my country as you like to portray it i never did i still paid my taxes just chose not to live here for a while.Nope no credit to the world surrounding me if you have something someone needs they are willing to pay for it its been that way since the beginning of man with the barter system.

As I said, plenty of self-regard. It seems to be a national characteristic for half the population now - vainglory.

You did abandon our country.

You left to live in another EU country with ease. You have now come back to tell us that we don't need to. That's hypocrisy Plenty of non europeans buy property in the eu with EASE so dont get your point anyone who can afford it can.

Actually, no they don't. It has to go through anti-money laundering checks. The complication is in actually living in the property that they have purchased. You know, immigration.

The EU didn't help you out there though, right?"

what has anti money laundering checks to do with anything if you have earn,t your money and paid tax on it you are clutching at straws now mate. Is it really so hard for you to agree its easy to buy a house live in it if you are from outside the eu and do a job that they value. It seems to me you could be some kind of troll because you will argue against the most basic statements.

This is one of the most uncomfortable threads I have had the misfortune to read. There are elements of the extreme left who have such a lack of tolerance for other opinions apart from their own.

I’ve never been to a food bank but I bet it takes courage to walk through that door .

Some, no doubt feel a sense of shame.

I feel for them but I also pity those who portray these brave souls as spongers..

It is usually easy if you are very wealthy, as most things are, but not for an average person.

You are also saying that it is easy for a non-EU citizen to immigrate to an EU country to live and work?

No need to apologise Sir. I rarely donate to charity. If a friend or neighbour is doing a sponsored event then I will give for their efforts. My rules are pretty simple. No large corporation charities, nothing that should be government funded,no overseas charities, nothing to streetbeggars, nothing to street chuggers, nothing in envelopes pushed through my door, nothing to animal charities, nothing to cold callers. I sometimes give to RNLI because brave men risk their lives and a few pennies in the poppy tin if I think the collector is genuine. Nothing to comic relief or children in need. And nothing to any organisation trying to make people feel guilty by showing stark images. I do pay taxes and HM Govt gives to some on my behalf.

And I respect everyone's choice to donate. Food banks are one my most disliked charities. Each to there own. I read the Trussell Trust report and website. Very politically motivated in my view.

The report was commissioned by the Trust so hardly independent in my view. Wake up folks and dare to challenge those trying to manipulate you. Don't be fooled by the hidden agendas.

No, he's younger and angrier and not as simple minded in his belief that those in charge will do what's best.

Definitely a generational difference.

Some, no doubt feel a sense of shame.

I feel for them but I also pity those who portray these brave souls as spongers.. "

" I didnt realize corbyn was on this site.

Costa when every point you make regardless of the topic, is "yeah but corbyn" you remind me of Vicky Pollard.

How on earth can you ignore what has happened and still say 'could be worse, could be corbyn

Then I hear 'yeah but corbyn' and think fuck me, this is like talking to Vicki Pollard.Well mate however much you have a fantasy of me dressed as vicki pollard its not going to happen. Now been back in the uk a year and all i see are friendly people plenty of jobs advertised but must admit people havegot fatter since i moved abroad.

...and the magic happens.

A baby boomer who's benefitted from the growth and stability and opportunity to move provides the EU comes "home" and tells us it was all crap and much better when he was young

The EU didn't help you out there though, right?what has anti money laundering checks to do with anything if you have earn,t your money and paid tax on it you are clutching at straws now mate. Is it really so hard for you to agree its easy to buy a house live in it if you are from outside the eu and do a job that they value. It seems to me you could be some kind of troll because you will argue against the most basic statements.

So just to clarify, you think that it is "easy" to work through the anti money laundering checks from outside the EU?

Do you know what they involve?

Guess what, as an EU citizen you only has to go through the most basic ones to move money and buy property.

It is usually easy if you are very wealthy, as most things are, but not for an average person.

You are also saying that it is easy for a non-EU citizen to immigrate to an EU country to live and work?

I am not trolling, I am pointing out that you have benefitted from free movement and the right to life and anywhere in the EU which you will deny others with Brexit.

Hypocrisy.Im pointing out that i would have done it anyway without being in the eu and im sure lots of people will continue to do after we have left.I can understand why someone like yourself who is so negative about everything would think that way but mate just have a bit of confidence in yourself and think positive its amazing what you can do.

You know nothing about me.

You also have no idea what it would be like to move from outside the EU or if it would even be possible. Work and residency visa for you sir? What skills do you bring?

If you are rational, as you claim to be, you may have concluded that it would be easier to move somewhere else. However, it was a relatively painless process wasn't it?"

You also no nothing about me either as i have lived and worked outside the eu most my life and it was all very simple because that was all sorted by my employer. As for knowing nothing about you i can see by your posts over the past months that you are a negative doom and gloom merchant the kind of person i really try to avoid in the pub and will argue just for the sake of it.

Your success is purely down to you though. Not body else. No external circumstances made you the "success" you are. Except that they have it seems.

The Brexit Party Ltd is merely a cypher. Brexit is the solution to so many of the problems for the country you have not lived in. The man who helped bring us to this place of chaos does not like being questioned. He does not like democracy very much. You knew what you were voting for so you must have voted for this too as it is his version of Brexit.

No. I'm not trolling you. You make assertions and are then surprised when they are called out.

You are not worthy of special attention although you do seem to consider yourself in that way.

I call out everyone who claims fact and certainty where there is none. Everyone propogating unconsidered half-truths or lies.

Now you can see why I call you out.

However, it was a relatively painless process wasn't it?You also no nothing about me either as i have lived and worked outside the eu most my life and it was all very simple because that was all sorted by my employer. As for knowing nothing about you i can see by your posts over the past months that you are a negative doom and gloom merchant the kind of person i really try to avoid in the pub and will argue just for the sake of it.

Ah. So you are self made by working for someone else's company who sorted stuff out for you. Unlike actual entrepreneurs who have to do things themselves. Yet still such self regard

Nah. Not at all negative. I just don't have blind faith in the promises of a known liar with zero data to back the existence of unicorns. You aren't someone used to people questioning you. Blind obedience and nodding at your wisdom more your thing. Like your chums at the Brexit Party Ltd Firstly where have i ever said i was an entrepreneur? let me think!!!!! never.on what grounds do do you make the assumption that i am not used to being questioned and blind obedience is more my thing? Secondly i am not affiliated to the brexit party.I can see why you troll me now it seems you have made up this fantasy man in your head who you have projected onto me.If it helps you in your negative doom and gloom life i am quiet happy to carry on being your fantasy figure with whom you can get all your anger and frustration out on.

Your success is purely down to you though. Not body else. No external circumstances made you the "success" you are. Except that they have it seems.

The Brexit Party Ltd is merely a cypher. Brexit is the solution to so many of the problems for the country you have not lived in. How on earth can you ignore what has happened and still say 'could be worse, could be corbyn

They are not victims. They are apparently poor.. work and they will not be poor.

My hope, if labour get in, is to reinstate work houses to give them the self respect that they are earning their wages and keep and are not a burden on society

No free lunch if you can work either on benefits or foodbanks..

. There are quite a few I see who I feel like saying try getting a job when they complain they don’t receive enough benefits. The worst ones that seem to have one reason / excuse for not been able to find a suitable job are the lone parents I probably issue more food bank slips to lone parents than single men or men with partner and children.

Try any employment.. you never know, you might like it.. "

Funny isn’t it....I have been self employed all my life, travelled the world, been on the dole for two weeks when I was fresh out of college but didn’t like it so found work and got on with life. I have a lovely georgian house in Bristol and yet I am the bastard son of a public school twerp whose family paid my single mum to piss off and gave no support to her or me over the years and you know I can still find a lot of empathy for those who cant get their chaotic lives sorted. I imagine you have had a bit more of a privileged upbringing and so feel able to make your empty headed pronouncements which to be honest sound as if you are reading them off the back of a cornflake packet. So bloody shallow and heartless it’s embarrassing

Financially struggling due to looking after my parents. Self employed, had a year's worth of wages set by, but that was 3 years ago. Not entitled to any benefits. It's very easy to fall into difficulties. I just deal with it, but find it truly difficult to know that some days I can't afford to feed my cat, and that keeps me going.

. Even if you are not entitled to any benefits and can’t afford to eat you can go to your local jobcentre and request a food bank slip.I appreciate it can be daunting and maybe even embarrassing going into a job centre but we are there to help despite the bad press and the film I am Daniel

I don't envy you doing what seems to be a thankless task between not being able to provide the help you may want to for many of those in needed to being abused by those few who are not.

I hope you have good days

"oxfam estimate 500,000 people in the uk rely on food banks not a good record but compared to germany 1.5 million, spain 1.5 million and france 3.5 million it looks pretty good.So not just a uk problem it seems."

That's alright then

What's happening in each country and are the numbers comparable?

Germany is larger (not twice as large) but has quite a tough welfare system.

France has legally forced all supermarkets to not waste edible food.
