"Apparently it works in other countries.
So they get 2 days of overtime, or is there 2 shifts of people working say mon-thurs, and wed-sat?"
Apparently people are more productive doing less days.
Don't shoot the messenger unless it's on the 5th day. |

"I believe Labour's plan is for a 32 hour working week (4 x 8), but still getting the same pay as for a 39 hour week.
"
Oh right... I'm not sure who that will work well for.. but I'm sure a few people will be happy! |

if a four day week comes in all firms will do is lay people of to cover the full time wages for those who stay to do a four day week.hey presto more people signing on.same as there other plan of giving wirkers a share of the cimpany if more than 250 are employed.ya think a firm that has 260 employees will give up some of there company or just lay enough peeps off so it falls below 250. |

Watch the sheeple queue up to spout the capitalist line that a 32 hr week will destroy commerce because it will bankrupt the economy. Its the same argument that was used to justify child labour. It was trotted out again when progressives proposed the 6 day 72 hour week was proposed, and the 48 hour week, and a weeks annual holiday, and 2 weeks annual holiday, and paid that holidays should be paid. Not long ago it was trotted out when there was a proposal that there should be a minimum wage. Anyone notice a pattern here?
Anyone think that maybe some of the workforce have their heads rammed so far up their employers arses that they no longer recognise the smell of the shit they are eating and regurgitating? I wonder if any will change their mind about how long the working week should be or how society should organise itself when they find themselves being made replaced by technology? |

"Well that's the end for many small businesses then ...good move jc"
Bet you said the same about the minimum wage and if you had been alive in 1833 you would have said the same about the first Factories Act that abolished child labour under the age of 9, and the Slavery Abashment Act in the same year. |

It all depends how it's implemented. Labour are also talking of not allowing the opt out on the 48 hour working week as well.

Indeed.
And it was only because the working class fought for improved terms and conditions.
Every time the capitalists and the ruling elite resisted, often with violence.
1919 is fascinating year to study.
The workers wanted a cut in the working week and better housing.
It was the only way to resettle 1 million + men from the front.
The capitalists refused.
Churchill didn't want to mobilise, so he declared war on Russia.
The military went into mutiny, the police went on strike and industrial unrest broke out every where.
Lloyd George called in the leader of the TUC and said if they went ahead with a rail strike the Government would fall and the unions needed to be ready to take over.
Most of the workers just wanted better conditions, not a soviet revolution.
They settled for a reduction in the working week to 48 hours. |

"Aye you so right ...bloody kids should still be working in ta factory ....and as for minimum wage ....5 pound is more than enough...to keep people where they belong...."
And you are well past your prime! You should have been killed off by dysentery, cholera or any one of the numerous airs that used to keep peasants like you in their place until those pesky Quakers, abolitionists and do gooders came along and forced the establishment to improve the lives of the hoi polloi.

Zero hours contracts have been so corrupted by unscrupulous employers that they cannot be allowed to continue. Remember a zero hours contract is not for the benefit of the employee but the employer. As for those who don't want to work many hours they can have limited hours contracts, and yes I know there will be someone somewhere who will loose out but I'm sorry "the needs of the many..." and all that. |

Not quite sure that makes sense as a post. Basically there have been a few studies that show people putting in extremely long working hours in offices are on the whole no more productive than those who work less hours as the latter are more effective and happier because they have more leisure time. I have been self employed all my life and been lucky enough to enjoy what I do so am more than happy to put in the hours. Zero hours contracts are dangerous because they do not give any sense of value or self worth to those employed under these contracts and they are open to abuse by managers - my eldest experienced this when working in a trendy restaurant in London - a new shift manager who was woefully inadequate decided to try and exert his position by taking against her and basically gave her no shifts for two weeks when previously she had been working 40+ hours. She left but had no resort to constructive dismissal claims. So basically a zero hours contract is used to maintain a flexible workforce but not pay freelance rates or provide any benefits so its a charter for abusing workers. |

Your right no one does force them to take a zero hours contract...By the same token someone who then said "stuff it i am not going to be a virtual serf to a Mike Ashley type employer. Would no doubt be labelled workshy by many on here....Oh and for the record i would not work on that basis |

It always strikes me as one of those dubious claims when one is told people find them ‘handy’. In what way does that work for an employee? |

So you mean it’s not like a proper job then?" Depends how you define a "proper job" i guess, a lot of people work to live and not live to work so being flexible is good for them. |

I have yet to meet anyone who has wanted a zero hours contract. I have met many who have had no choice but to accept zero hours contracts tho.
To be clear, a zero hours contract requires the employee to make themselves available on an as required basis for an employer with no guarantee of employment day to day or week to week, but a guarantee that if hour are rejected when offered regardless of the reason for rejection the employer will 'punish' the employee by a minimum of moving them to the bottom of the call list thus reducing the hours they will be offered until they work their way back up the list.
Zero hours contracts are like trickle down economics, they are a total con designed for the benefit of the rich and powerful at the cost of the less fortunate. |
