Medicine shortage

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Anyone been reading about this, seems that certain types of medicine are in short supply.

I have Been hearing this in pharmacies and hospitals recently, saying that supplies for many drugs are going to dry up soon.

Big concern is that many elderly and older people might not get the medication they need, which could lead to an increase in deaths.

Has anyone heard about this also?

Bit of factual context, if you want it, or not

Quote from one of the pharmacists who took part in the survey, “Shortages are occurring more frequently both in UK and globally. This is due to a variety of reasons including but not limited to an increase in global demand, the increase in cost and availability of raw materials, fluctuations in exchange rates and some manufactures discontinuing unprofitable medication lines."

An inquest at Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court on Friday heard that a French woman, who has lived in the UK for over 50 years, committed suicide because of anxiety about Brexit.

Is this the first Brexit-related fatality?

Yes, that's true, I think the Brexit was an aggravating factor in the Jo Cox murder. And perhaps the Darren Osborne murder at Finsbury Park, too.

This has been happening a long time before Brexit. However it’s only going to get worse with it.

Sourcing Testosterone from my regular chemist has over the last year become very hard. Usually have to now shop around.

Imposing Brexit at a point where medical supplies, including medicines, are increasingly unavailable, is ill thought through and potentially irresponsible as well as unforgivable, should any deaths or serious harm to people occurs. It's certain that someone like Gove is pretty unreliable to be left to manage readiness - I'd not trust him with anything, let alone my life.

The government are worried about the Brexit effect on pharmaceuticals because they’ve imposed an export ban on 30 or more drugs.

Watch the price sky rocketing on some drugs as profiteering takes hold .

its not just a "tablet" issue....

for example the stuff you need for Chemo in relation to Cancer treatment isnt actually made in the UK and is very time sensitive...so where that sort of stuff can at the moment be shipped by road, all of that stuff may need to come in by plane at least at the beginning until "port" issues are dealt with........

Those who orchestrated brexit don't give a fuck. The ultra rich, the Americans and the Russians won't be effected.

Just for balance....there are problems getting hold of some drugs at the moment because of a large outbreak of swine fever in China which supplies most of the pigs intestines that these blood thinning drugs are made from. This will affect the cost and supply in the short term but the more worrying aspects of brexit are the time dependent drugs and radioactive products that currently are available readily via road and rail freight which will have to be sent by air at increased cost which will be passed on to the nhs. The labour parties concept of a state run generic medicine manufacturer is not a terrible idea given that many generic medicines are manufactured in india whose economy is booming making their drugs more expensive. Its an emotive subject but I think we all know that Brexit will make medicines more expensive and cause scarcity in the short term with access to the best drugs becoming dependent on how much insurance cover you have to top up your rationed NHS allowance.

Labours concept is a terrible idea drug companies spend years developing drugs and very few of them work hence the high price for the ones that do as they have to subsidize the millions spent one the ones that dont.Their idea would hinder future research into new drugs.

The question is whether the risk of being mitigated.

So making generic drugs either by paying for a license to manufacture or making drugs that are out of patent (as India does) to provide a cheap source for the nhs makes no sense? We are not talking about new drugs which will be paid for and used by the nhs as they do at present and will continue to do so until the point at which they become generic. The drug companies will continue to make money as before but the nhs will supply itself probably pretty much at cost. Makes sense to me

The recent conservative leadership voting unfortunately added a 3 week or so delay to the efforts to help ensure the UK is better prepared for medical needs, in the context of international shortages, compounded by a potential complexity and delays due to Brexit, if it happens.

this is a worry as my hubs has 32 items per 28 days for his complex mix of health problems ..if his drugs where to be missed he would 100% be in hospital ... we only spoke to his dr the other day and he seems to think that everything will be fine and the pharmacy has said the same ...it is a worry but also it will send hospitals into overdrive as they will be chocablock ...worrying times indeed ..

there was a documenty on bbc2 back along about drugs being stockpiled

So you think it's a good thing that brexit will fuck up our health system, and people will die. We've gone from "brexit will give us 350 million a week for the health service" to "brexit is great because people with medical needs are going to die". I'm guessing you're not a diabetic rationing their insulin in case there is a temporary supply shortage that would kill them. I'm guessing you're not a cancer patient worrying that their radiation treatment might not be possible, or their chemotherapy drug not available. You're bloody typical of brexiteers - "it's a price worth paying" - as long as it's not you paying the price. It takes a lot to get me angry, but now i am fucking fuming!

Personally I don't think pharmaceuticals will be delayed, "if" crossings are in turmoil "which I don't think they will" then I think flights will be used for emergency stuff.

I imagine the European companies are less than thrilled that the EU claims the number 1 slot. To complicate the situation the various companies specialise in different areas of research and product’s.

The government did actually commission an independent survey into what will happen re drugs in the event of Brexit. Also because another problem regarding isotope medicines is that 5 of the 6 research reactors that produce them are going out of service in the next 10 years as they are at the end of their working lives. Facts do rather complicate things

The future isn't a total unknown. You can figure out, for example, that when you go food shopping, that you'll need food for more than just right now. Because you can think about what you need for the rest of the week, where to get it from, and if you can afford it.

I think the point is that there will be an effect on the procurement logistically and financially which will have to be paid for somehow and stockpiling will become necessary instead of just in time purchasing and this could cause serious harm in the short term particularly in the case of time dependent items. Oh and as we all know....in a sellers market the cost of items increases so as long as you’re happy with that?

Also my next door neighbour is a pharmacist at the hospital has said not to believe all you here.

Just a load of rmoaner lies,Boris has it in hand

There are already shortages of drugs ffs. Epipens, HRT therapies and drugs for epilepsy are three that are hard to source today. Are you suggesting a) that this is made up and that b) a No Deal Brexit will improve things?

Is there no level of stupidity that some brextremists wont stoop to in their halfarsed cries of project Fear? .

There probably in short supply because there stock piling them.

You know like buying more than normal

Instead of trying to be a smartarse (and failing), why not read up about the issues with pharmaceutical supplies and then you's perhaps understand what's going on rather than being tiresome and trite"

.

Oooo playing the man instead of the ball.

im affected by the shortage. im on Primidone which is an anti-epilepsy drug for a tremor and only got half a months supply now ive had to cut from three to one a day at the request of my docs until the neurologist decides on something else. the drug cant be stopped dead because it causes withdrawls and I feel like im rattling already. im also on anti-depressants and if they go short im dreading it

"My god some people will beleve anything, I'm scared for all of us if people run around shouting because the EU properger machine tells us it's the truth. Drugs will only be stopped for coming into the UK if our customs stops them. End of wake up. "

Oh dear.

The EU has said nothing about medicine supplies.

British Ministers have.

Brexiteers btw.

The civil service has.

The problem is the predicted logjam at ports.

Brexiteers predicted a 40-60 % reduction in throughput because of non-compliance with border and customs rules.

This is what you voted for - an overnight return to barriers and red tape that we spent the last 50 years removing.

It's difficult to fully comprehend what you may be trying to say.

It's clear though, based on the available evidence, that major shortages, globally and more locally, of significant medical supplies, that Brexit disruptions will make problems worse. It's not just about medicine, it's also about broader supplies, that essentially underpin health service treatments. If someone isn't personally affected, that's good fortune but those who need continuous medication, or who are dependent on cancer treatment to provide them with a chance of a life that is neither cut short or doomed to having a much lower quality or meaning for them, avoidable problems caused by some self-serving bottom feeding scum, should be halted. There's no room for political ideology or politicians who operate only for themselves or a very privileged few, to be sustained in public service. Such filth would be dealt with the contempt and full public disgust from right minded decent people anywhere.
