As I understand it she is on the autistic spectrum and this make her more likely to be fixated on subjects that she thinks are important and quite frankly we should worry because the hotter the planet gets the wilder the weather will become and the more likelihood of crop failures and devastating storms. If you have kids and care about their future think long and hard about your actions and be grateful that some people are willing to stand up and try to make a difference

Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education (in England and Wales) had this to say regarding today's climate change protest:

"every child" should be in school.

"They should be learning, they shouldn't be bunking off and it's very irresponsible for people to encourage children to do so."

Well, Gavin, they are learning. School isn't the only place you do that.

That said, you are a great example of how learning isn't really necessary to rise to high office.

Providing you know the right people, you can be an utterly incompetent twat and still be given charge of a country's defence; then, after being sacked from the Cabinet, be put in charge of education.

If you've got the right connections, being a useless cunt is no bar to you.

Throughout history, the generation coming through drives change.

Throughout history, the older generation always resist.

The next generation always wins.

It's how we make progress as a society.

And it's nice at last to be talking about something other than that bloody b****t.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Our neighbours in Germany have really been inspired by Greta.

So much so they decided to introduce a new regime to the family and informed their daughter as soon as she returned from the mass "Wag off Friday" protest.

Firstly (starting on Monday) they will no longer drive her to and pick her up from school in the diesel car. She will have 3 choices, walk, bike, or get the bus which only runs every hour.

On Tuesday she has to make a start clearing out her wardrobe and replacing all her pretty girl clothes with Eco friendly woven Hemp, Jute, and, Wool. Also the Nike's will be replaced by Dutch style wooden clogs.

These clothes should be a worthwhile investment as they will help to keep her warm when the heating system is turned down to 10 degrees.

At the moment she is keeping her fingers warm by furiously typing how shit her parents are into her laptop and mobile phone. However she has been told to buy a good pair of mittens because when device charging is restricted to two hours per week she will not be able to do much typing.

She had recently mentioned how much she was looking forward to Christmas. Ah! Christmas they said to her.

This year there will be no tree, lights, or candles (all too damaging to the planet) Presents will be restricted to one piece of eco friendly clothing (see above) and Christmas dinner will be limited to a salad. Non Vegan Turkey and all the electricity used to cook the veg is just no longer sustainable.

Sadly it's too late for this year, but next years 2 week holiday to the 4 star hotel in Mallorca has been replaced by one week in a tent on the North Sea coast. Four days of which will be the time taken to get there and back using Eco friendly public transport.

For some reason their daughter no longer finds Greta quite as inspiring.

I've not heard any argue for flagellation.

Except in the darker corners of this website.

All I hear are voices calling for acceleration of the transition to a low-carbon economy.

I don't hear anyone calling for the abolition of aircraft, the abolition of cars, the abolition of ships, the abolition of heating.

All I hear is pressure to speed up a change in their means of propulsion, away from fossil fuels to electric, hydrogen and the like.

There is no argument about climate change - the UK Government and others worldwide have set a target of becoming a carbon neutral society by 2050.

The climate change movement simply wants to accelerate it.

I do not understand why anyone feels threatened by a 16-year-old girl who believes we can accelerate the transition.

Of course there is no argument about climate change itself. And as someone who witnessed first hand some of the consequences only last week, there is none from here.

However you say "others world wide". Yes there are others but the glaring omission are the others worldwide who haven't, or just pay lip service to it and carry on regardless.

I really don't see why the western economies should flagellate themselves on the altar of climate change while others who share the same planet stand still, or in some cases increase their CO'2 output.

A little acceleration is fine but (as any driver should know) put your foot down too hard and you will more than likely crash and burn.

Yes I've read about Norway and its "intention" to be all electric on short haul (however short that may be) flights by 2040 (hardly next week is it?)

The only electric aircraft that can actually fly at the moment struggles with two fully grown adults on board. I can't see it being popular on the Benidorm stag and hen circuit any time soon.

As I said commercial electric aircraft are decades away.

On a wider note, this typifies the whole of the green movement at the moment.

Ban everything that works in the hope that something new will replace it. Micawberism at its best.

Ah, well, that's another story that is.

I'm off to Madrid today.

Now, I weigh about 65kg.

I bought a ticket with a 23kg case.

Usually, that's enough.

But if I buy too many cigs and nick-nacks, I might be overweight.

£10 a kg Easyjet charges me.

But I could be sitting next to someone weighing twice as much as me.

But he or she won't be charged £10 extra for each kilo they are overweight!

Con or no con. It certainly isn't "another story" it's very much the same one.

At the moment the average short haul jet (Airbus 320 Boeing 737 Etc.) can carry around 200 passengers plus luggage and even some freight with a range exceeding 3000 nm.

Because of fuel costs (and profit margins) airlines charge for excess baggage, but because of political correctness don't charge for excess passenger weight. Although in America some airlines are making some overweight passengers buy two seats.

Even when full with a good few overweight passengers these aircraft operate well within their safety limits.

How long will it be before an electric aircraft can do the same? Weight will be so critical that every ounce will have to be counted.

I really don't see an electric aircraft that could carry even half of that for a 10th of the distance appearing in the next 30 - 40 years.

Kerosene fuelled jet engines are going to be around for a while yet, so get used to it.

There is no argument about climate change - the UK Government and others worldwide have set a target of becoming a carbon neutral society by 2050.

"

If the capitalist west had shared their advances in technology instead of using them to conquer & subservient others we probably wouldn't be in such a mess anyway.

But then you & I wouldn't be living n the country we do, we'd probably be the third world country. Then again theres many at the bottom end of society that would argue we already are.

We didn't share technology with China yet it has a booming economy although to be fair it does have a very large bottom end of society.

It is also the worlds largest and fastest increasing polluter.

Well said...! I thought the same thing myself just as you posted your reply!

I don't have the first clue as to the cost of these deadly foul coughin' nails.

If someone's carrying enough of these things to warrant or add to 'extra charges', then, knowing these fags one is slavishly addicted to are supplied in packs of 200 (I'm sure that is the correct figure) then, thats a few good ol' air pollution sessions, lungs be damned, that's an addicts' choice.

Stood next to a puffer feeding their addiction is, well........ no-one's choice.

As for a person's weight vs. said addict's surcharges being unfair..?

What a disgraceful and disrespectful selfish me me me comment.

No thought about people's health situation causing such.

As long as puffing addict's public poison is got, and cheap too.

A site contribution figure, which many here volunteer to for around twelve weeks is, I am certain is less than 1 pack of 20. Not 200, or 1 of Christ knows the smoker gives.

Mind you, the taxation on these things when bought here in the UK is, at least, something, and cheap too, I'll warrant.

Why do people on the right keep repeating their mistakes?

Why do they see a 16-year-old girl with autism as a threat?

Every time there is a movement for change, people on the right want to brand it as extreme left.

And every time history shows they were on the wrong side.

LGBT rights in the 1980s, the anti-apartheid movement, workers rights throughout history.

And many more.

Why do you keep resisting change when the injustice is so glaring?

"Our neighbours in Germany have really been inspired by Greta.

I love the extreme examples people give here to defy children protesting, such as that post above with the story about eco friendly clothing, etc.

Using that exact same example is like saying it's ok to let corporations and people tax dodge because you'd be a hypocrite since you get a discount on some items you buy in Asda.

Perhaps some reading lessons would help you read what people post.

As for blaming the previous generation, I walked to school or rode my bike to senior school as the grammar school was two miles away, we put on thicker clothes in winter when it got cold, we had clothes that were passed down,we went to Bournemouth for a week on holiday, we had one telly and a landline, of course we grew our own veg and are foods in season.

Kids would riot if they had to walk anywhere, couldnt turn up the central heating, go abroad on holiday, have new clothes every five minutes, a telly and playstation in their own bedrooms, eat out and have takeaways etc etc.

You live in dreamland when you say the previous generation have used more resources than today's kids, how many will give up all those things, when they do I will be the first to applaud them, a very few will most wont

"

I don't hear anyone calling for the abolition of aircraft, the abolition of cars, the abolition of ships, the abolition of heating.

You obviously missed the interview on Sky news the other day.

Some vice president of the Green party came very close to all of that.

Flying for example would only be allowed for necessary journeys. You can bet your last fiver that a long weekend in Benidorm wouldn't count as necessary.

When pressed by Adam Boulton that it all sounded very "authoritarian" he agreed.

Sounds like someone who hasn't caught up with the developments in electric engines for aircraft, then.

"

I applaud your arguments so far but I hope you have done a deeper dive into the carbon footprint of electric engines for flight and the limitations....bit like the current hybrid silliness or wjnd is the messiah....all help but most hinder more so. "Straight into climate change denial and blaming the young for using what little resources the previous generation left..

and you wonder why this rebellion is happening..

You live in dreamland when you say the previous generation have used more resources than today's kids, how many will give up all those things, when they do I will be the first to applaud them, a very few will most wont"

If we switch to plant based foods as Mr Mansfield is now telling us today then we would have to switch to intensive farming to cope with the demand.

There is a very dirty plastic wrapped secret at the very bottom of Spain in Almeria. Whilst people smugly eat their plastic wrapped salads spare a thought for the 100 thousand odd trafficked workers who live in slum conditions. Where they labour day and night in shitty cheap poly tunnels. Haemorrhaging harmful chemicals into the run off and then out to sea. Not to mention the micro plastics that end up there.

Now I’m not Climate Change denier but its grinds my gears that people think switching to vegetables is some sort of magic cure.

There are too many people it’s as simple as that. Consumerism will end us.

It's not possible for someone to interact in politics on a world level without incurring a carbon footprint.

Trying to paint her as a hypocrite is just another way that the rightwing elite is trying to avoid having to do anything to save the planet.

I'm not skeptical about climate change, I remain cautiously skeptical on the actual causes and very skeptical of the proposed solutions. We seem to me to be far too quickly rushing to conclusions as to the actual cause while there still remains unexplained anomalies in the data. Even more worrying is the rush to solutions without adequately looking at the possible problems those solutions will produce themselves.

A little skepticism in any area is always a good thing, blind faith and belief in anything, even in God, normally ends in poor decisions with pretty disastrous consequences. We have to get this one right.

The American talent show pageant one where over enthusiastic parents take their kids childhoods away by forcing them to travel around the USA in meaningless competitions.

After yesterdays rant I'd like to see a behind the scenes on her where we see her writing the scripts, until then she's just a publicity stunt.

If it gets more people onto tidying the mess the planets units all well & good, though they really need to stop this "We are killing the planet" old hippie nonsense.

"She ain't green m8 ...simple

Haters will hate, she is a 16 year old girl trying to make the world aware of climate change, what is wrong with that ??"

Do you think that any of those World leaders took any notice of her speech? Yes, they wriggled in their seats a little but until it impacts their Government and businesses, then real action won't happen.

Climate change realisation isn't new, its been around for years. Most do their little bit in the best way they can.

Deforestation needs to be stopped. That's something that could happen now. Flying needs to be reduced. That will take a generational mindset to change.

Long journeys start with small steps.

"IMO she's starting to resemble an episode of Louis Theroix.

We can't kill the planet, just us & a few other species, the planet will continue to go around the sun long after we are gone.

A few species ??Its going to be far worse.

.The World Wildlife Fund's 2018 Living Planet report demonstrates a global wildlife population loss of 60 percent between 1970 and 2014. ...

It’s just the beginning.

Yes, we have cultivated a few species we find edible.

As population grows, more and more space is needed to farm our food.

Inedible species become marginalised and pushed to the edges to make room for food.

I believe we have lost a lot of species this way.

Consumersism and how and what we consume is the problem.

Mothers being concerned for their children’s future is natural.

Their actions should be applauded not mocked .Good people stand up while others sneer like a snide from the sides.

Very true bob was thinking about all the kids ordering stuff on amazon and ebay and how much pollution is caused by parcels moving back and forth every day.But over population of the planet is a big factor too and if they were so concerned they should stop breading. Now you as a good old tree hugger should understand that the planet is over populated.

"I'm eating my lungs, I'm not eating the lungs of tomorrow.

I'll leave that to Trump and Bolosaro

So the plastic wrapper round the packet isn't plastic, the chems used to grow the tobacco aren't pesticides, the oil used to process it isn't releasing CO2 and all the carcinogens released into the atmosphere aren't contributing to killing the planet then. None so blind

What’s your carbon foot print on the farm my carrot crunching friend...

You must be sniffing that red diesel if you think your without guilt.Unless you think it’s a hoax and you’ve gone full tin foil gimp..,

Classy, usual response from you insult anyone who disagrees with you. The BIG difference is I'm not preaching about how green I am, I know some of the things I do release pollution I can also spot the hypocrisy of the pretend eco warrior

Go ahead tell us of your carbon footprint compared to buying a packet of fags...

Tells us about your eco farm...

You're the eco warrior tell us about your footprint, I'm not the one preaching you are, put your own house in order

Ok I live in teepee and drink from a muddy puddle .Live off nettles and bugs and I’m a soap dodger like that girl you and your far right friends like to abuse..

Apparently that’s a prerequisite to talk about climate change..

Just call me swampy.

Go on then put up one comment I have made about her let alone any abuse I have directed st her

Your a climate change denier.Youve got previous form in this forum.

It's not, or at least it shouldn't be, a religious thing that can be either believed in or denied. I think a more skeptical approach, especially to some of the proposed solutions, is far more likely to get us heading in the right direction on this. Calling people deniers in just shutting down the debate, similar to the BREXIT cry of traitor or democracy deniers. It gets us nowhere.

Your a flat earthier or your not ,it’s absolutely either or.

You’re with us or part of the problem ,you’re onboard or you’re not .

You think climate change is up for debate ??

If 9 out of 10 doctors said you had cancer you would opt for the one who gives you the all clear??? Because you’re a “skeptic “

You’re part of the problem.

"

Of course if 9 out of 10 doctors diagnosed you with cancer, you would be skeptical right ?? and wouldn’t be in any hurry to find a cure .You would have all the time in the world .

Good luck being skeptical when that day arrives..

"I've not heard any argue for flagellation.

"

Because green energy takes the money away from the fossil fuel producers. Money is power, they can't possibly allow us to harness wind, sunshine etc so we can do without them.

She certainly has a screw loose.

The same standards rarely apply on here sadly. Look at the way everyone piled on the Maga hat wearing kid who was 15 and was vilified. Turns out he was just stood still. He was called all the names under the sun by some of the same names crying foul when an activist like Greta gets called out for trying to make a difference.

one may agree or disagree whether CO2 is the main problem of our ecological crises , there are many human deeds causing severe damage and threaten our own species , from plastic pollution which no one denies any more to monoculture and over cattleing , contamination of rivers and freshwater supplies to save money in the production process ...the list as long

Greta is merrily the public face of an awakening generation and her deeds and action puts anyone to shame who knew and complaint about the known and visible harm humans do to its host . Many became indifferent over time , caught in the daily fight to survive in the hamsters treadmill , others resigned or got corrupted

It’s the privilege and obligation for the young to be radical . Greta is radical in her pursuit . But like others of her format before her , she will be begrudged by the mediocrity of the mass and hated by the culprits she is challenging. She has potential to become a Jean d’Arc of the 21 century. Mind you that she is not just demanding action for a sustainable world - she goes further - she is questioning the very validity of a society which is based on profitability .

Surely she is no Saint and she doesn’t want to be one , but she takes the burden of all the poison spread on her for standing her ground on behalf of her generation , chapeau ! Whether right or wrong in all her topics - so far she has shown more guts then anyone on this forum here . The fact that she has enemies proves she stays in for something , a trait many are to afraid to obtain

Enemies???

She's bot my enemy .but let's be real here .she is being used ..who is writing these speeches for her .,??? Maybe her parents .if the political activists can find time to get down off the trees or where ever they are protesting this week .

Maybe all these young people should take to the streets and protest about the homeless and the health services also .

Oh it will be interesting to see how great gets home .

Will it be by boat or on a nice bit aircraft.

Why do we educate our children to become thinking individuals , equip them with the ability of express them self in eloquent manner and then starting to doubt and begrudge the very same skills once they come to age and apply them - well - it is applied against our saturated generation and disturbs our comfort

I remember the times I was that young and radical . Although i didn’t act on a global scale back then. rather regional - but the comments towards Greta are very similar to the ones back 30 years ago , it’s almost like a deyavue
