I'm curious about the response in this part of the forums. After being a bit shocked by the response to the same question in the Lounge.

I always (if I can) vote, even though my vote is rather a lone voice in the wilderness where I live.

My MP is Kerry McCarthy (Lab). She seems to do a good job, so I will vote again for her.

I always vote and even though my party of choice varies at times I think being able to vote is the one thing that sets us apart from dictatorship. It pisses me off intensely that people dont vote because its boring/all politicians are corrupt/my vote makes no difference/etc as the only people who benefit from that attitude are the rich and powerful. We got the politicians we deserve and the only way to change the current crop of self serving shysters and snake oil salesmen is to get involved and challenge their behaviour.

We have a "right to vote" system, not a must vote system

"I always will, even if I spoil my vote"

Apparently, these days you've gotta line through them all and write "none of the above".

I prefer a spoiled vote to a not bothering to vote. I think it's a stronger message.

It doesn't show apathy, but frustration. Whereas not showing up at all can be interpreted by the politicians however it suits them.

Which I would change, but only after reform of our voting to something that allows people to feel that every vote makes a difference.

Where I live, my vote is basically wasted as my choice doesn't have a hope in hell...!

yes i vote for two reasons....

1) if you don't vote, the you don't get right to complain about anything...

i would rather someone went and spoiled their paper, than to not go any vote at all.....

2) my parents/grandparents fought hard for the right to vote... i am not going to dishonour them by not voting...

The right to vote yes, people didn't fight to make you vote, just the choice if you so wish to.

Yes, the idea that the powers-that-be voluntarily gave the masses the right to vote is just, well, bollocks.

The elite never gave up any of their powers without blood, sweat and tears spilled by the working classes to extract concessions.

True PR is the only way to break this endless cycle because even if it is a bit more complicated and would require more alliances to get things done it would be an honest reflection of how people voted. That and getting rid of mendacious bastards like Gove and Bojo would get my vote.

But we had a referendum on this very subject in 2011. Very few seemed care about it (low turnout) and even fewer wanted to change it.

Interestingly and unlike the EU referendum that occurred just 5 years later, the AV referendum was constituted to be legally binding on the Government and not merely consultative.

I sometimes wonder if I was born into the wrong body and then born in the wrong town.

Historically, my hometown has been solid Labour and the quality of our MP’s up until fairly recently has been very poor indeed. My vote upto 2010 was invariably wasted, as I voted Conservative.

Despite being parachuted in, under Blair/Browns equality drive, we now have an MP who is probably the most talented that we have ever had and she has raised the profile of the town quite significantly. Despite this, I still can’t vote Labour and this time it appears that the town is turning against her and towards for right wing parties like UKIP and The Brexit Party.

I am still an outcast though because earlier this year I joined the Lib Dem’s and so for the foreseeable future I will continue to submit wasted votes lol. That said - as a very last (nuclear option) resort - I might have to vote Labour if there is any chance at all of one of the eejit candidates getting the vote. I could never live with myself if I wilfully enabled TBP or UKIP to get an MP in the House.

True, but given the current state of political stagnation perhaps the general public might have more of a taste for it this time and although I cant remember the exact terms of the PR on offer at the time I believe it was a half hearted hobbled version of pr which was designed to maintain the house of lords moderating influence. I would be far happier if they brought in a system such as germany has and moved the whole of parliament to somewhere more representative of the whole country - Coventry perhaps?

And the Lib Dems wont say which party they will support in a hung parliament. What price will they exact this time?

Yes.

I have for the last 5 years opted for a postal vote because I was often out of the country on voting day.

Postal voting is not ideal as the council gets an opportunity to keep a record of who I am and who I voted for.

I do ALWAYS return a vote paper though and if there is no one I wish to govern on my behalf, I am more than happy to "spoil" a ballot paper. Spoilt papers are counted!

Haven't voted for quite a while now. I will not change either, it's all a game, a dillusional game.

I pay taxes, so I have the right to an opinion and a voice to air my complaints, if I wish to do so.

Ditto.

I have spoilt my vote by putting down what I really think of them when I see the selection given to me. I know that they sometimes read it at the count. I have done it at a local election.

However I ALWAYS vote at GEs.

People have died for the preveilege. I will ALWAYS use my vote. Always.

It's a long time since I lived in Huddersfield.

However, one of my memories of Huddersfield is of the green party. A group of caravan/councilhouse dwelling, matted hair, smoking misfits.

The Greens ensured a public bus service on Christmas Day and Boxing Day which linked some larger hospitals with some larger settlements.

Of course, this did nothing to help residents from outlying villages who had relatives in hospital. And it did nothing to help the drivers of the buses who had to leave their relatives behind whilst they worked on Christmas Day.

Make of that what you will.
