So, in short, HS2 will link the city centres of London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne.
Who exactly will HS2 be competing with?
Who will benefit?
Will it take freight off the roads?
Since articulated trucks with dirty, nasty diesel engines are effectively banned from the very centres of most cities, I can't see HS2 carrying much freight.
And since no matter how fast the railway will be, I can't see it being quicker or cheaper to take HS2 from Edinburgh to London than to fly? (Check out cheap flight prices)
Therefore, I suspect that HS2 will be competing primarily against MegaBus. |

It will presumably get state subsidy, like the other rail franchise businesses. It will have some competition but it will probably be rigged, perhaps by making other services slower.
It's probably the wrong solution and it also adds to the problem of an over-complex fragmented system. |

The Great Central line, North from London, was engineered to continental standards in late Victorian times. They actually anticipated a channel tunnel would be built, but not as long ahead as it turned out.
Dr Beeching (now rotting in hell, hopefully) decided to junk the line. The route is still large unchanged - in fact near Leicester a heritage railway uses the track, and near London some of it is still in use.
Cancel HS2, re-open the Great Centra and save billionsl. Ok, it misses out Brum, but who wants to go there? |

There's plenty of branch lines that could be reopened, to give better railway connections.
The world has moved on since Beeching. What were small communities are now larger, and need better transport options. |
