Or perhaps he is demonstrating once again a tactical nouse that far exceeds anyone else's on the Conservative benches.
Why?
We now the House will have to elect a new Speaker BEFORE the next election whilst Johnson and his allies are in a minority. Ergo... No matter what would happen in November, there is now no opportunity for zealots to try to engineer any skullduggery.
Precedent dictates that the next Speaker should come from the Labour benches and so that now seems most likely to happen.

The Speaker will be elected by the current House. Remember the House has a Conservative minority of (currently)41. This means that the Speaker will be elected by the opposition and Conservative pragmatists. |

I agree but.... the fact is that the Speaker is going to be chosen by the current set of MP’s and the most likely and logical successor is the current deputy speaker. |

I was under the impression that the precedent is for The Speaker to be elected from the ranks of the government backbenches (because the only time the speaker votes is when there is a tied vote and it is only right that the side to be weakened should be the government side). But you could be right and I got it all wrong when granters explained it to me (Granters was Sir Robert Grant Ferris MP for Nantwich and Deputy Speaker) when I was a 15/16 YO Young Conservative activist. |

It's good seeing people in parliament showing their intelligence and moral standing, especially so when there is a vacuum of it in government - particularly at the top. Johnson and his unelected sidekick appear clear failures and charlatans, spouting shite like much of the zombies on here, who slavishly urge for Brexit flesh. Tragic failures by Johnson in his ever sickening shallow pursuit of something that might mark him out from the shadows of those using parliamentary sovereignty for the good of the UK. |

It is going to be so funny watching the Mail, Express and Telegraph and all the Brexit toy soldiers and disciples go into meltdown when the next Speaker is elected.

This egoistic smart alec has of course worked it so that it is this remainer parliament that gets to elect the speaker who will reign over the new intake of our M.P's in the next parliament after the election. Seem a sharp practice to me and more proof that the current lot are running scared of the electorate. |

Bercow is fundamentally a parliamentarian and believes in the right of parliament to scrutinise and where necessary rein in the wilful stupidity and chicanery of the present government and we are very very lucky to have had him there doing such a good job for the last ten years. He also is a man of great intelligence and a professional who has respect for this country’s laws and principles which is bloody rare in the current febrile atmosphere of politics. |

Bercow for PM! I cannot think of anyone more suitable to run a coalition government to sort out the brexit shit shower. He has no interest on staying on after, no danger of staying in power a moment longer than necessary. And a proven dedication to the good of the country over and above any party politics. |

funnily enough I was listening to LBC tonight on Ian dales show and they had the expert David Starkey on who knows a thing or two about the UK Constitution.
He's not as keen as you, in fact he thinks bercow has been the worst speaker in history and has opened up wounds between the legal sovereign parliament and it's real sovereign citizens that may never be healed.
Surely your not going to argue about an experts opinion based on facts?.

Bercow’s speech tonight was magnificent and simply highlighted that his intellect is simply on another level to those who have been challenging him.
Most interesting snippet was his belief that recent events have accelerated the need for the UK to finally have a codified constitution and he is in favour of a Royal Commission to look into it.
As for Brexit he simply stated that any Brexit deal (or no deal) is possible as long as it commands the support of the House and until October 31st he will act in a way that ensures that all voices are heard. |

Bercow has demeaned the post of speaker. Hopefully Boris will repay him in kind by refusing to put him forward for the usual Lordship after he's gone. Give him the BEM instead, that's about all he's worth.
Speakers are not automatically entitled to remain in post. At the start of each Parliament there's a chance to vote on the speaker, but tradition is that there's no objection, no vote and the sitting speaker stays. But if the Conservatives win the next election, they could demand a vote and try to throw out Harriet Harman or whoever.
Don't forget that when Harman was a young lawyer working for the National Council for Civil Liberties, she stood up for the rights of the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE). What a lovely woman! |

Rubbish....Bercow has made the role of speaker much more relevant especially in the current climate of the governments attempts to undermine parliamentary democracy. If they dont elevate him that would be yet another example of the petty vindictiveness of the tories in government. As for the NCCL and PIE, the latter were a bunch of sickening monsters and the defence of them was questionable in terms of morality but legally? You could argue that terrorists don’t deserve legal representation and where would that get you? Its a weak headline grabbing statement about one of our better parliamentarians and smacks of pomposity and petty point scoring. Behave!  |

If Bercow is so great, why did ONLY the opposition benches cheer him when the parliamentary session ended? (In chaos incidentally, with jeering, singing and other disorder which he studiously ignored).
The holder of the post is supposed to be strictly neutral, but Bercow has allied himself with the Remainiacs/Remoaners on every possible occasion. He even has a "Bollocks to Brexit" sticker on his very expensive Range Rover.
