The U.K. government has pledged to uprate the pensions of ex pats living in the EU for the next 3 years.

Let’s hope they continue to do so after those 3 years.

Er . . . Cause that's how they've always been referred as.

OP, what does this actually mean?

Their pensions are to be "uprated".

I assume they are in receipt of a UK state pension.

Is the Government making a virtue of saying it will continue to pay their pensions?

Not sure I understand what this means.

What has happened in the past is if you draw a uk state pension and live outside the eu then that is the amount you will receive for life but if you lived within the eu when the pension rate rose you received that too.As we will be outside the eu when we leave your pension will remain fixed for life the amount you get at the time. The government have now said if you live in the eu you will get the rise for the next 3 years.Hope that clears it up for you.

It's an interesting conundrum.

Does an expat pensioner cost us more or less than a UK pensioner.

They have lower strain... But then again, they don't recycke their pension into our economy.

If they have paid in they are entitled to it surely.

It will be much cheaper if they stayed away but I know of a few that returned when care was needed

State pensions are not funded. Its a social contract. And the rules change over time... The triple lock is new, etc. I have no idea of the rules on expat pensions when they were paying in.

Given the EU expats seem to get a different deal I'm not sure what the 'promise' was...

Ah, thanks I didn't know that.

Do you know why British pensioners were penalised in this way because they lived overseas?

For a transitional period, perhaps. But why should taxpayers here pay for a national health service abroad? And if pensioners can get free care paid for by the UK Government, what about working-age people and tourists?

Ex pat's of which I am one must have private health care which in Spain isn't necessarily cheap. This comes into force post Brexit I'm informed. I'm not UK rules of retirement age yet but in Spain it's age 60. However the king of Spain has written laws to help ensure ex pat's are cared for. France I'm told hasn't! No surprise so perhaps there will be very few ex pat's in France next year.

Health care tourism does put a strain on our NHS.No doubt after Brexit the walking dead will return from the costas in their droves.

But those people who you refer to As walking dead will have paid into the system all their lives so do you begrudge them treatment?

It shouldn't but we just don't enforce it as other countries do.

Yes, the ones who scream loudest about charging non-UK nationals for using the NHS are also the ones who claim the NHS is overstaffed with administrators and pen-pushers.

I guess they must think doctors and nurses have bags of spare time to produce invoices and send them out.

.

They nearly all return when there health fails which is why I wouldn't pay a pension to anybody choosing to live abroad.

Health tourism is estimated at 600 million, small change compared to the 111 billon NHS budget but then knowing how government estimate you can probably triple that figure.

Everybody should show id before getting treatment on the NHS.

It's a national service not an international one.

A and E is always free for anyone that needs it, whether a UK citizen of someone from overseas.
