They do however bring a lot of money and tourism into the country. The money that they get "paid" is actually money given back to them from the MUCH larger sum of money that The Crown Estate gives to the country. They have an agreed percentage of the total income that is returned to them (20% possibility) | |||

The Monarch owns The Crown Estate and signs its income over to the Exchequer at the beginning of their reign in return for the Royal Settlement of the Privy Purse. This is enacted in law (Civil List Act), at any time the government of the day can repeal the Civil List Act and both the Royal Settlement will cease, of course the Crown Estate will revert to the Crown at the same time and according to their last Annual Report (2018) they made a £329.4 million net profit of which 75% went to the Exchequer, the other 25% paid for the Civil List. So the Queen pays herself not a penny of tax goes to the Crown!
