US - UK Trade Deal

Our PM is reported to have said this:

"There are massive opportunities for UK companies to open up, to prise open the American market," Mr Johnson said.

"We intend to seize those opportunities but they are going to require our American friends to compromise and to open up their approach, because currently there are too many restrictions."

Good luck with that, Boris. Given who you're going to be dealing with, you'll really need it.

he told america to compromise

I actually laughed when I read it.

The EU has been trying to do a free trade deal with the US since forever, they couldn't even get past saying hello. Clinton, Obama, Bush, none of them would compromise even one tiny bit.

It's funny because trump could actually one that could meet EU needs for a free trade deal, but not if its called a compromise.

When they compromised with Russia to end the cold war, and stop ships delivering more troops/missiles to Cuba, well it took them 20 years to admit they compromised?

Hot air.

The UK will be eaten alive by those it's desperate to get a deal with, especially a huge country like the USA.

Smoke and mirrors, whilst the conservative continue to prove their total incompetence with a failed EU exit that continues to plunge the UK into debt. They are the party of misfits and the entitled who are destroying your wellbeing and country for ransacking. Whilst Johnson keeps you sweet to get them reelected

You’re entitled to you’re opinion, if you’re so sure of the outcome make sure you make it work for you, gamble on the £. The Conservatives haven’t destroyed my wellbeing. I’m a selfish bastard,I do what’s good for me. I voted to remain because it was best for me. I’d never vote Labour because I’d be worse off. We all live different lives, Brexit was a poisoned chalice, no matter who was in charge.

the question is really how much is trump going to make johnson bend over for this deal... and how much johnson will have to sell the fact he wasn't bent over when we all know he was in fact screwed within an inch of his life.....

if we already have a trade surplus with the US, how is the super duper trade deal with "america first" going to make that any better......

Same reason we can't sell haggis. The Americans have double standards when it comes to food.

How big a market is all the things Boris is looking for the US to cede ground on?

Mowbray pies, shower trays and cauliflowers seem very specific...

Is Boris trading a queen for a pawn, just to be able to give an jar of strength and to say concessions are not all one way

Yes, however US market is also quite particular about meat content anyway, BSE or not . Crazy when you see some of the shit they produce/eat themselves .

Most of the US distrust UK meat. Hell, you can't even donate blood if you lived in the UK before 1996

"Rules governing who can donate blood in the United States have recently changed. But anyone who spent more than three months in the UK between 1980 and 1996 is still prohibited from donating. That rule is in place to minimize the risk of spreading Mad Cow Disease."

I'd suggest Fast Food Nation as some good reading on US food safety standards.

It's funny to think about gun toting Americans eating hormone fueled beef burgers with "cheese" also full of growth hormones, worrying about CJD.

haggis i know has to do with the "sheeps lungs" element of it... where the us FDA don't allow that part of the animal to be consumed in any way full stop...

as for pork pie.. my original guess that was that any meat allow in would have to be "frozen or vacuum sealed"... and they cant do that with a pork pie...

I am in Ireland and we have the same rule. I assume the whole world has that rule.

Have you spent 12 months or more in total in the UK* between 1980 and 1996, including living, working or on holidays?

Well eventually we have an answer. They can, the pie just needs to be cooked in the US and cant be cooked before.

They said this is the same for every country and they dont export to any country as there is no demand. Apparantly they did a small number to singapore for ex-pats but lack of demand meant they stopped years ago. The ones to singapore were under the same rules as the UK, just needed to be frozen and cooked on arrival, not cooked before.

But the EU will hardly protect the "Mowbray pork pie" name, so the US can just make their own.
