WTAF is wrong with Priti Patel ? As someone with an immigrant background, she should know better. Just looking at her face contorting into her trademark smirk reminds me why you should never give a little fascist any power.

"She is a hard line no nonsense Home Secretary ...

"

No nonsense? She's full of nothing else.

She thinks criminals should feel terror at the thought of going to prison. By their very nature, they don't - or they wouldn't be criminals. And I'm talking about the rapists and armed robbers she had in her sights, no the sort of financial criminals she turns a blind eye to because they fund her Party.

She claims to have changed her mind regarding the reintroduction of the death penalty. I doubt it. She just understands that Parliament will never reintroduce it.

She's basically Esther McVey with a dangerous amount of power which she is in no way fit to wield.

I'm horrified that my community can produce someone as ignorant and intolerant as she has proven herself to be.

Why are some Asian people so right-wing ? Surely seeing the racism and prejudice still prevalent today would make you want to work to eradicate it, not become a little fascist yourself.

Think you answered you own question almost, by saying all right wing is prejudiced, fascists and racist it makes the loonies on the left look stupid, and as people are able to look at things for themselves and not go on word of mouth and be brainwashed they are able to make an informed decision and vote for who they like

Ps I’m not referring to the person in the topic of the thread just pointing out a stupid comment

Indeed.

Just think about all the assurances given previously by the UK Government about protecting EU citizens rights.

All now seemingly discarded at a whim.

And people wonder why the EU doesn't trust vague offers of "alternative arrangements" for the UK/Ireland border?

85% of hauliers have not applied for the necessary paperwork.

Why not?

Because they heard all this bollocks six months ago and perhaps wasted a lot of time and money once before.

Yes, Cameron, remember that incompetent

Boris Johnson sent an idiotic letter to the EU this week demanding they remove the backstop. Is it a lack of self-awareness ? Too much entitlement ?

The current Tory belief system is that if you know a bit of Latin, and can quote it in public in a plummy accent, somehow that makes you qualified to hold public office and make decisions of far-reaching importance that will affect people's lives. There's no sense of responsibility, or having any knowledge to make such momentous decisions, or having the sense to take advice from experts (remember them ?)

If we get the politicians and government we deserve, what on earth did we do to deserve this lot

I take it you are referring to the 2011 occasion, where Pritti Patel said she would support the reintroduction of the death penalty?

She wasn't Home Secretary then, and to equate that to her "having a plan to bring back hanging", is disingenuous at best.

two things...

1) that was Correct as under Teresa May's government they had put that up regardless of what was happening (deal or no deal) what priti announce was a change under the Boris johnson administration that freedom of moving rules would change as of 31st october regardless.....

thats why you now have some very unhappy tory mp's like Alberto Costa, who has been the Champion for EU citizens rights, and is now very unhappy that Bojo have renegged on a promise he was making through the leadership contest at hustings.....

2) again... it doesn't cost anything.... now! when the scheme was originally set up people were being charged £60.......... and remember that was change when the likes of Alberto Costa again took their arguement to teresa may!

Eu citizens rights and freedom to leave and enter the uk have not changed.

The requirement for the existing 3 million to register for settled status was never going to change - if they haven’t already applied then that is poor judgement / planning on their part.

Johnson assembled an extremist cabinet that will actually make some people happy . Competence and coherency between them all and the requirements of the country are minor points, when you have a boss with a track record of serial failure and highly dubious competence. He may actually look a little better, in contrast.

She should have been forced to not hold public office for a substantial period of time, when she had to stand down last time.

I think it was sarcasm.

Sadly, atleast where im from, any discussion of immigration has been around the dialogue of, "all these asylum seekers and economic migrants are ruining our area and don't fit into our culture."

Press them on which groups they mean and you get a pretty varied response from Bangladeshi's, Somali's to West Africans, and the Pakistanis.

All I'm saying is that the abstract theory of 'brexit' - meaning, "we want equal opportunities for all nationalities to come here", which people like Hannan and Boris push, doesn't deliver on what some people, particularly in working class estates, believed they would get, which is a severe decline in migration levels and coupled with a clear reduction in communities that trends show, that they deemed not compatible with their values, or that they were a burden to the country.

When the UK becomes a "third country" like India or Russia, immigration becomes a matter of "national competence".

Just as immigration today from India or Russia is determined by the UK, not the EU.

So in future each country will determine it's own policy towards UK nationals.

I imagine, Ireland excepted, a fairly uniform reciprocating of the UK position.

So if the UK decides no foreign national can do roles here earning less than £36k a year, expect the same in return.

"Have the Eu set up a similar settlement registration system?

When the UK becomes a "third country" like India or Russia, immigration becomes a matter of "national competence".

Just as immigration today from India or Russia is determined by the UK, not the EU.

So in future each country will determine it's own policy towards UK nationals.

Looks ok for most countries then..

The point is we had guaranteed entry to and rights to work in EU countries.

Now we're unlikely to.

There is just as much chance we will be able to

No. At the moment there is 100% chance.

On 1st November 100% you will still be able to travel to an Eu 27 country and gain entry with a British passport

I don't at the moment.

But I've been fortunate in the past to live and work in other EU countries.

People now will lose that opportunity.

I realise in the grand scheme of things, that's a minor issue. But this is what we were talking about on this thread.

I suggest if you need to stay longer than 90 days consecutively or the nature of your entry/exit requires more than 90 in 180, then you need the correct extension appropriate to your circumstances - in the same way you would for other countries in the world.

Otherwise I am fairly sure for most people 90 days in every 180 is ok.

Thanks. I missed that.

I guess they must be waiting to see if there is a transition period for EU immigration under a withdrawal agreement, or not, before finalising the policy.

anyone have any idea what the % is of the 65 million in the u.k actually spend more than 90 days at a time in the e.u countrys?my guess is the majority of em are peeps who retired to spain.the rest of the countey probably spends no more than a fortnite there at any one time.and i cant see the likes of portugal and spain making it to difficult for tourists to get in.is a very small number in the scheme of things who are there for more than 90 days at a time.and its not as if u wont be able to still move there after all if ya paperwirk is in order u can go live and work in most countrys

I think you're mistaken. As soon as we're out of the EU, we will no longer have our current access to stay as long as we want, live and work. It's still likely it will be possible to apply for working visas. But this is not the same as what we have now.

China don’t say “you are not part of our special club therefore you have no right to live and work in our country”.

I would need an appropriate visa, which I apply for and when granted means I live and work in China .

So if (say) i was a lorry driver doing european wide deliveries, at the moment i can perform my work year in year, without applying for special permissions from any of the EU governments. I just go and do it.

After October 30th, i have to apply for a work visa from every one of the countries i am going to pass through. I will have to pay for those visas. Any one country can turn me down for any reason they like (eg. they have enough truck drivers of EU origin in their country, it's not a "special skill" that allows me to have a visa).

In principle anyone from (say) india can come to work in England at the moment. In practice they cannot because the visas are very strictly controlled. And cost thousands of pounds. But they can't get them anyway unless they have special skills, or bring millions into the country.

After "no deal" anyone from England can in principle apply for visas and go to work in the EU. Good luck with getting those visas. And 27 countries, at say £1000 each, per year? Hope your job pays more than £27,000 a year...

"Only a third of the 3million Eu citizens in the uk have applied to the settlement scheme.

Why haven’t they all applied ?

Withdrawal agreement or not, it’s about preparing.

because for example there were going to allow people to apply via mobile phone, but it has only come out on android and not on ios for example...

because they who process was supposed to be steamlined from 75 pages to about 5 and they still haven't done it... not all of the stuff they were asking for in the original forms are not always readily available...

and there are a million and one things that have been promised but have not been implemented.....

For something as important as registering my status I’m not sure I would simply throw my arms up and say I can’t do it because it’s only for Android and I have apple!

There are other options to register ....

Personal responsibility

Or simply easier to blame somebody else...

its really easy to say something like that when this was the advice people were given till yesterday

"The Home Office has released a factsheet for EU citizens resident in the UK, reiterating that people have until at least 31 December 2020 to apply for settled status, which allows them to remain in the UK."

so for priti to change the rules with 72 days to go.... still seems harsh"

.

We could just go back to stamping outdoing and incoming visitors passports?.

Perfectly easy way to prove if you were here before or after October 31st.

After 30th October, with "no deal" you will have no more right to work in the EU than someone from India or China. That is precisely the point. Especially when we leave on bad terms.

Of course you found it easy to live and work in the EU for the last ten years. What part of free movement don't you understand? You know, the thing that priti patel is saying EU citizens will not have here, and hence we will not have there."

If you apply for a job in an Eu country you have no more advantage than if you are from a country inside or outside the EU27

Making it sound like that after brexit you are losing the right to travel to, work in or even live in the Eu is simply not correct .

"That's correct, no problem with a visit.

But the right to live there and work there?

Gone.

Wrong

I think you're mistaken. As soon as we're out of the EU, we will no longer have our current access to stay as long as we want, live and work. It's still likely it will be possible to apply for working visas. But this is not the same as what we have now.

The right to stay without the need for an appropriate application may be changing , but the opportunity and or the right to work or live there has not been totally eradicated. The poster suggested that the right to live and work there was gone - that’s wrong - that right and opportunity is not gone .

I can go to China to work and live there .

China don’t say “you are not part of our special club therefore you have no right to live and work in our country”.

I would need an appropriate visa, which I apply for and when granted means I live and work in China .

There you go. So unless you meet strict criteria on age, amount of cash in your account. Then you can't go, and if you do meet the criteria you can go for one or two years.

Now your making it up.

Have you ever applied for a Chinese visa to work and live in China?

But you're not suggesting that EU countries are putting the same immigration controls are China are you?

That is where you are utterly totally wrong. We are currently an EU country. Go read the gov.uk website about the rules for people from outside the EU getting permission to work or even just visit here. Look at india, coming to the UK. After 30th October you will have no more right to work in the EU than someone from India currently does to work in the UK.

Do you think that being English gives you some sort of special privileges? After 30th November you are a foreigner in the EU, with no better status than a foreigner from any other non-EU country.

Unless we get special agreements. You know, like a "deal". Not a "no deal".

But this simply isn't true. Occasionally a company will help you with a visa, but 99% of the time they will be looking for someone who has the right to live and work in the country they're hiring in.

Go read the regulations for someone from India coming into the UK. Then tell me how similar regulations will not be applied for english trying to settle in the EU. When our own home secretary is planning to apply those same rules to europeans trying to settle in the UK.

You really are stupid if you think being english will automatically give you rights to visas, when we are going to be denying those visas to europeans.

This is the reality of what no deal means. Anything better requires a deal of some sort, and the UK giving reciprocal arrangements with the EU27.

Yes, i have investigated this, on behalf of a former lover. Who i am unlikely to ever see again because of precisely these work and settlement regulations. Yeah so at least we're not arguing about the facts.

I enjoyed freely walking (figuratively speaking) into other EU countries and getting a job and an apartment. It was fantastic, and one of the things I enjoyed about the EU. And

I also enjoy the diverse community in my home town with EU and non-EU immigrants.

From 1st November it will be less than 100%.

On 1st November 100% you will still be able to travel to an Eu 27 country and gain entry with a British passport

And stay for a maximum of 90 days....a significant change wouldn't you say?

I suggest if you need to stay longer than 90 days consecutively or the nature of your entry/exit requires more than 90 in 180, then you need the correct extension appropriate to your circumstances - in the same way you would for other countries in the world.

Otherwise I am fairly sure for most people 90 days in every 180 is ok.

So there is a diminution of my rights? My ability to spend time in the EU as I wish will now be curtailed

No. The EU27 countries at not stopping you from entering. "

They will be limiting the time I can spend here though...90 days in any 180. That is a restriction to my current rights to come and go as I wish

Brexit. Allows us to control who's coming in. But doesn't change if the eu can control us going there. Really?

Bristol East

The single market consists of four indivisible freedoms:

Free movement of goods, services, people and capital.

UK is leaving that.

We become a third country in the eyes of EU states.

UK nationals no longer will have the rights of free movement because EU rules no longer apply to UK citizens.

So just as migrants seeking to live or work here will have to seek permission from the UK state in future, so too will any UK nationals wishing to live or work on the continent.

At the moment, that is a right, i.e. we do not need anyone's permission. We are about to lose it. In future, we will need to seek permission.

Most countries put on rules around age, amount of cash in your account.

I've looked into the rules for Canada for example. And I've also spent over ten years freely living and working in other parts of the EU.

After 30th October, with "no deal" you will have no more right to work in the EU than someone from India or China. That is precisely the point. Especially when we leave on bad terms.

Of course you found it easy to live and work in the EU for the last ten years. What part of free movement don't you understand? You know, the thing that priti patel is saying EU citizens will not have here, and hence we will not have there.

If you apply for a job in an Eu country you have no more advantage than if you are from a country inside or outside the EU27

Making it sound like that after brexit you are losing the right to travel to, work in or even live in the Eu is simply not correct .

Not a "no deal"..

And yet none EU immigration is bigger than EU immigration?.

Why is that?"

Because of treaties (you know, like "deals") that we have with a lot of countries. Mainly commonwealth. Arrangements surrounding marriage, ancestry. Vital skills the UK requires. Lots of things. But in every case there is no automatic right to come here to work or live. It is always at the specific permission of our government to the individual, it is difficult to get that permission, it is expensive. And that permission is not extended to hostile countries.

Like the UK that is being hostile to the EU, trying to hold them hostige to our demands, refusing to give them money that (rightly or wrongly) they believe we will owe them.

So good luck to that lorry driver trying to get that permission to operate on the continent, like he has had every day of his life so far, and which will be terminated on 30th November.

Just wrong and confused .

I don't think there are work permit restrictions for haulage but differences in the type of license an EU member gets and a non eu member which restricta the number of drops they can do. At least, that was a concern at one point.

Have you got any stats on how many British people living in the UK spend more than 90 days in any period of 180 in the EU?

How often do you spend more than 90 days in a 180 day period in other parts of the EU?

"Why are some Asian people so right-wing ? "

Why bring ethnicity into this discussion ? Somewhat racist no ?

By the way - the answer is it is because each individual (even Asians !) are entitled to have their own view. Trust that is okay with the usual racist fascist left wing crowd ? lol

I spent 13 years living in other EU countries.

It was great.
