Everything has its price in American eyes.
The Wall Street Journal discovered Trump asked his officials to looking into the possibility of buying Greenland.
Just imagine how many lives might have been saved if George W Bush had just bought Afghanisatan and Iraq instead of sending the military in lol. |

Well, I guess the Yanks might have quite a liability looming on the horizon.
Camp Century was a bizarre Cold War missile site built inside the ice sheet.
Powered by a nuclear reactor and later abandoned.
The shift and melt of the ice sheet threatens to bring it to the surface.
I doubt if Denmark want to pay for the clean-up.

A curious aside about Greenland is that it is the only country to have left the EU before the UK.
Early 1980s, after a referendum, the member state Denmark removed it from EU jurisdiction.
The UK could do the same - remove England and Wales from EU jurisdiction - but chooses not to.

The facility was evacuated in 1965, and the nuclear generator removed. Project Iceworm was canceled, and Camp Century closed in 1966.
The project generated valuable scientific information and provided scientists with some of the first ice cores, still being used by climatologists today |

There was an interesting piece on radio 4, I’m in the car a lot, last week about the social problems in Greenland and the backlash in Denmark about spending money to solve the issues.
No idea if DT has a plan but neither the EU |

There are a number of dynamic things the UK could do if it wished, however it forces all countries to play by the same rules for reasons I can not phantom other than being a throwback to colonial times. |

Yes, the UK does not have the constitutional flexibility.
As unions go, it is a zillion times more centralised than the European one I keep hear people complaining about.

i guess he thought denmark might want it off their hands what with the drink problem the highest suicide rate in the world (8 times higher than france) and high unemployment.1 in 3 young people are subject to sexual harassment in the home due to drink and is the reason for the high suicide rate it might fit in well with some parts of the usa. |

I suspect he never wanted to go to Denmark in the first place and suggested buying Greenland to get an reaction and an excuse not to go .

There are checks at gun shows if you buy from the vendors, but people wander about and sell privately to each other. I've seen guys with shopping trolleys full. It's a major loophole.
The problem with current background checks is that they're not good at spotting people who've had mental health issues. The databases are not properly linked. The current check just makes sure you're a legal resident and have no criminal record. |

I visited Colorado and anyone can buy any gun in Walmart, except for machine guns and rocket launchers. As long as you're over 18, and not legally prohibited (ie convicted felon).

ive taken out the bits that "someone" has put in because it is a red herring.... because there WAS legistlation in place before... so its not like its so radical is wasn't in place before...
there was an "assault weapon" ban within the 1994 crime bill that passed (funny enough that was put in after a mass shooting incident in stockton, california when someone went mad in a school playground with an "assault weapon" and killed 6 kids)
the only issue was there was a sunset clause within in which meant that part of the bill had to be renewed every 10 yrs...
it wasn't renewed under republican president bush in 2004....
see... the argument they made then is that you don't need an assault weapon to "hunt"..... thats still an argument like that you could make! the then ATF made the distinction between assault weapons and sporting guns/hunting guns...
in fact my mate who hunts makes the same argument as bob did.... which is "if you need an assault weapon to hunt a deep... then stick to fishing!"
and as for background checks..... its one of the few "90-10" issues in politics that most people agree there should be extended checks, which is ironic since trump has actually loosened them since he took office, as he has reverse someone of the obama executive order provisions.... |

i don't think trump realised that in formal terms it wasn't the danish government that invited him.... it was the Queen of Denmark....
so imagine if he had done the same thing to Queen Elizabeth...... you would rightly be horrified....
anyway... there is a theory going round that he found out Obama was also going to Denmark at the end of the month for a visit... and we all know he is very sensitive when it comes to contrasts being made (crowd sizes for example) so this is his way of getting out of going by creating a storm..... |

Maybe Trump wasn't as misguided as first thought. Denmark has form on selling territory, when it sold the islands of the Danish Antilles in 1917, to the USA.
They gave up their piece of Carribean paradise for $25 million, preferring to keep Greenland instead. They now have to subsidise the 56000 people on Greenland to the tune of €420 million per year. |

I remember reading reports in National Geographic a few years back that with the ice sheets melting in Greenland that there is a high possibility that there are untapped gold deposits bigger than the ones in Alaska. |

Yes, Greenland is rich in "rare earth metals" important for electronics etc
China is buying up reserves in Africa.
Another factor is that Russia and China are well ahead in opening up new sea routes as the ice sheets shrink.
Russia is also opening up new oil and gas deposits in the region. |

there was an "assault weapon" ban within the 1994 crime bill that passed (funny enough that was put in after a mass shooting incident in stockton, california when someone went mad in a school playground with an "assault weapon" and killed 6 kids)

it wasn't renewed under republican president bush in 2004....

Fabio is the Fab version of a Goliath when it comes to adding useful, interesting and engaging content on this section of the website. He rarely gets drawn into the claws of a troll and simply ignores them until they (and they always do) disappear into the ether from which they came. Is he always right? No of course not, who is. But his content is ALWAYS engaging.
You will have to be here for a very long time and up your game quite considerably to elevate yourself from where you are perceived to be at the moment. Sneering, name calling and insulting other posters is a skill that. A child could pick up. Perhaps you could try to be more engaging rather than more divisive?

I reckon it must have been the "in flight" entertainment on air force one, and thought "not a bad idea"....

A revival of Project Iceworm.

600 missiles with multiple nuclear warheads, located in 52,000 miles of tunnels, spread across an area three times the size of Denmark.
And because Greenland is so much closer to Russia than the United States, that attack distance gave the US a huge strategic advantage.
It caused a diplomatic rift with Greenland some time ago when it became public - Denmark had given the US consent for a military base on condition no nuclear weapons would be stored there.
The US abandoned the idea when its engineers were unable to come up with a design capable of adjusting to the movement in the ice sheet.
