Portugal plans to open dedicated corridors in its airports so British tourists continue to get fast-track access after Brexit whether the UK leaves with or without a deal, the Portuguese prime minister has said.

You normally have to pay £7 for this, I wonder if they will also push the boat out a little further and provide lounge access as well?

Imagine how great that would be if we had easy access to all the EU countries.

I have an Irish passport but hopefully anybody holding a British passport won't get held up in the airports or delayed at passport control or security

Kind of instantly sums things up, we're supposed to be impressed that one country post brexit will still let us travel us there?

I assume that's the point that the OP is making using irony.

No, but we will have to pay for a Visa and do the longer method of waiting around to get checked and passport stamped compared to the easy stuff we have now.

No rights to stay, either.

Banned from returning within 90 days of departing, too.

We are applying for Irish passports as Ellen mother was Irish. As Brexiters have taken freedom of movement away from everyone.

I suspect that visa free travel will be signed off straightaway into the EU. They will want their tourists.

Possibly not reciprocated. How could it be if we're "taking back control"

Of course, we want their tourists too. Hmmm. What to do?

You think this is about economics?

If this was about economics, we would never have had a referendum.

And if this was about economics, the result would have been a landslide for remain.

But you think the other side is all about economics?

Why?

We ignored the economics. Why shouldn't they?

Tourist travel is a "gimme".

That's not the same as free movement. We won't be free to work and live there.

We are non-Schengen anyway so I doubt it makes much difference to the EU.

Yes, "tourist travel" is the default, the WTO option if you like. 90 days max, barred for next 90. Slow queue at entry points while they do the "third country" stuff.

They may just leave us in the non-Schengen lane. It's logistically easier too.

We'll see I guess.

So let's get this right. Portugal will do one thing and the rest of the EU something else?

And if you fly into Portugal, you are then within the free movement zone so travelling into Spain, France or anywhere else will be without further administration?

Different strokes for different folks.......

Today, someone who arrives in the UK with an Indian passport has no right to travel elsewhere in the EU.

After Brexit, a British national who arrives in Portugal with a British passport has no right to travel elsewhere in the EU, either.

Didn't say I was leaving the UK, no.

If I did, the issues would be exactly the same wherever I was - a UK passport rather than an EU one.

I am about to lose all my rights of EU citizenship.

Along with 65 million other people.

I think that they mean that it will be more expensive and difficulty to travel to EU countries.

Sure we're a laughing stock as a nation, people love stereotypes of nationalities. But most people, especially when you meet them in person, are well aware that only a small minority of the population voted to leave. So we're not all tarred with the same brush, from their point of view.

Yeah, the UK leaving the EU was and is big news across Europe. And they are laughing at us, like I said people love stereotypes, and this has shifted to 'small minded easily influenced fools'. I'm highlighting that it's a stereotype, and that when you talk to European people that they realise we're not all like that.

Actually I was backing up your point about people being friendly when you visit their countries despite the negative stereotypes. I think we're on the same side here.

And yeah, of course people would have laughed at Greece had they done that. And felt sorry for them. Why wouldn't that happen?

Yes. I enjoy chatting about all subjects with people.

Greece are a much smaller country and didn't stand to lose as much as the UK. So it wouldn't be as big a story.

But why are we getting bogged down in a conversation about who would be talking about Greece if they had voted the leave the EU instead of us?

I was agreeing with you that people in Europe will largely remain friendly to British people after Brexit, and was giving reasons for my opinion.

That aspect of our relationship with our neighbours will largely remain unchanged, of course.

But for many people that's not the important bit. I work for a US company, and lead the EMEA team. We are planning for a number of difficulties Brexit is going to bring us.

But most people, especially when you meet them in person, are well aware that only a small minority of the population voted to leave. So we're not all tarred with the same brush, from their point of view. who is laughing at us a bar man in Spain taxi driver Italy a pilot in Germany do you really think the average person in Eu sit about howling at the uk ffs so if Greece came out the Eu and we had voted remain do you think British ppl would thing any differ t about them or sit in bars howling how stupid they were lmfao

Why wouldn't that happen? do you really thin if Greece had left and not the U.K. You would walk in yr local and even heard it mentioned ?

I know you were I just can't see yr point about ppl laughing at Isi don't think most will care they all ha e there own problems today's news is tomorrow's chip paper so to speak in large if we leave with in moths ppl in the eu will of forgotten all about us we will be just brits getting pissed spending money on our hols in there country lol like I say not much of a change there

People love laughing at others misfortune, especially when they brought it on themselves. It's human nature. Sure it's probably dropped off for a while, but Brexit is part of the stereotype the world has of British people now. It's a question I still get asked about from people all over the world. well when ppl all over the world ask you next say it's democracy we had a vote and chose to leave they may envy the fact that ppl in the U.K. We're given a choice and we're brave to leave some may say stupid some may respect the British for having the balls to do it lol"

We were not given a choice, simply asked our opinion. Which stupid politicians chose to then set into stone.

Most of the people I talk to take the piss out of it all in one way or another. Particularly the spectacularly pitiful way its all been managed.

On a point of information. Greece was never going to leave the EU and the referendum and elections they had in Greece were not about leaving the EU. What GREXIT (Greek Exit) and the Greek referendum were about was whether Greece should leave the Euro Single Currency.

It wasn't about leaving the Euro... It was about whether to accept the terms of a bailout.

And over 60% voted against it.

After which, the EU offered worse terms, and the Greek government accepted them.

When was the last time you went to Europe and had people laughing at you? total load of crap i go to my place regularly and its not something that is on peoples minds.I also watch the news but brexit is not headline news well not in spain its only the uk news that is obsessed with brexit. The majority of Spaniards dont give a toss about it the only thing they are worried about is how it will affect their tourism as Brits make up 20% of that.

I can feel the anger and rage at someone having a different experience to you.

I don't know anything about you, not why this would upset you so much.

In anycase, i agree with people generally saying that Portugal is very friendly. And I wouldn't expect any animosity post Brexit

You are correct the referendum was on the bailout. I knew there had been a referendum on the bailout but in my memory I was sure there had also been a referendum prior to that on whether Greece should leave or remain in the Single Currency. My memory was incorrect. It was a general election that they had before the referendum and Tsipras won that on the promise that Greece would remain in the Single Market. However the main point of my post was that Greece leaving the EU was not the issue in GREXIT, the issue in GREXIT was only whether Greece should leave the Single Currency or not.

Hate is a strong word but they have never been best of friends. It always amazes me that they blank portugal out on the weather map the equivelent would be a british weather map with just N ireland showing and the south blank.

"So let's get this right. Portugal will do one thing and the rest of the EU something else?

And if you fly into Portugal, you are then within the free movement zone so travelling into Spain, France or anywhere else will be without further administration?

Different strokes for different folks.......

No, you will be an illegal."

No you won't...it would be in contravention of their free movement imperative.

The UK had an opt out on that but the Schengen countries are all signed up.....

"Today, someone who arrives in the UK with an Indian passport has no right to travel elsewhere in the EU.

After Brexit, a British national who arrives in Portugal with a British passport has no right to travel elsewhere in the EU, either.

"

You really must do more research The schengen agreement allows people on a visa or 90 day waiver to travel freely between schengen countries just more project fear by a remainer.

Do you mean all that project fear which is coming true and that brexiteers are now saying it was always a possibility so Boris has a mandate to crash out?

Love how the arguments switch depending on whatever issue is being discussed at the time but when you line them up together the Brexit position clearly becomes a sh*tshow of contradictions.

This thread doesn't seem to make sense anymore.

Portugal may allow us to use the fast lane.

And not charge for the visa

What has any of this got to do with schengen?

I know ... a shame really.

I started the thread tongue in cheek ... bit of humour for a Sunday morning ...

I even thought the post about Scottish accent getting preferable service at the french border might have brought the thread Back on the humour track ..

Bristol East

Fascinating read about Portugal in the FT today.

Pursuing a clear policy to encourage immigration with tax breaks for skilled professionals and an anti-populist sales pitch.

Fast-tracking non-EU nationals fits that agenda.

Immigration and foreign direct investment are on the increase
