Conservative party house majority

Within the next few weeks it is looking more and more lightly that the tories will lose their majority in the House of Commons, with bi elections and MPs talking of defecting.

What is the point of having a government that in effect can't do anything without permission from the opposition.

They are a minority as it is.

The DUP is propping this lot up.

Which does not augur well for sensible decisions about Ireland and Brexit.

The Conservatives haven't been able to do what they want even with a majority anyway

Chorley,

Hopefully the lib dems will win the seat in Wales tonight. So one more less Tory MPs. Boris will definitely be bribing the DUP to help prop the Tories up.

Interestingly the LibDems have massively played down Brexit in their campaigning.

No "bollocks to Brexit" on any leaflets and no mention of at all of leaving the EU.

Campaigning on local issues - health and social care and delivering for farmers...

Probably wise (for them) considering that Wales voted to leave.

I think that we are inevitably heading for a general election.

If brexit is not delivered by 31st Oct then the Tories are finished.

If it is, then they may actually see an increase in support.

If I were Boris, I'd be quietly preparing for a mid November election - Announcing it after the summer recess, dissolving parliament - and thus preventing MP's from further frustrating brexit.

And of course, that would see minimum objection from Corbyn because an election is all he's bothered about - never mind the fact that Labour will be wiped out.

Of course, if we're out by the time an election is called, Boris will have countered the Brexit Party threat and thoroughly spanked Labour.

Job done I'd say.

Even if by the remotest chance parliament is shut down the courts won't be.

After a successful vote of no confidence there is a period of 14 days to gain a vote of confidence in the same or a changed government . If that is not found after 14 days - a general election is required.

Parliamentary session is closed .

if the vote of no confidence is in the first week they come back from recess, which is the first week of september, then actually there is enough time where the general election would be on Oct 24th.......

so slow those horses......

After a successful vote of no confidence there is a period of 14 days to gain a vote of confidence in the same or a changed government . If that is not found after 14 days - a general election is required.

Parliamentary session is closed .

The Conservative Party has the opportunity to do what was right for the country quickly and decisively after the referendum. The vote was split with a narrow leave majority meaning that something had to change - but not too much.

They should have appointed a cross Party Brexit committee tasked with taking the EU out of the political structure and remained in the Customs Union and Single Market and committed to a further referendum in ten years time to assess future options then.

This would have delivered Brexit according to the referendum mandate and would have protected the economy and the status of the country across the world. We would have been seen as being decisive and pragmatic - which is exactly how it should be.

Instead, Theresa May and the Conservative Party decides to make Brexit all about them. I am fairly convinced that history will show this to have been a catastrophic decision on their part and it will ultimately consign them to a while in opposition and a legacy of the Party that started the breakup of the United Kingdom and the Party who accidentally (and fatally for themselves) brought about the end of two Party politics,

".A motion of no confidence he then has 14 days to fuck around after that a GE which kills another 6 weeks and we are out before the election exactly what i said about an hour ago but glad you have finally agreed.goodnight."

The reason there is a 14-day period is so that Parliament can find out if anyone else can form a majority.

It is quite conceivable a majority coalition is formed in that 14 days with one single purpose - to head off a bad Brexit - before it and parliament dissolves.

"Interestingly the LibDems have massively played down Brexit in their campaigning.

No "bollocks to Brexit" on any leaflets and no mention of at all of leaving the EU.

Campaigning on local issues - health and social care and delivering for farmers...

"

Possibly the only major party now that acknowledges there's more to life than Brexit.

"Yep i said the same if he calls an election after the party conferences parliament gets dissolved and we will be out on the 31st oct before the elections in November.Promise fulfilled.

if the vote of no confidence is in the first week they come back from recess, which is the first week of september, then actually there is enough time where the general election would be on Oct 24th.......

so slow those horses......

"

You forget there is a recess for party conferences to determine their manifestos.Corbyn needs momentum to tell him what he stands for.

Corbyn letter to Labour supporters:

"Whoever becomes the new prime minister should have the confidence to put their deal, or no deal, back to the people in a public vote. In those circumstances, I want to make it clear that Labour would campaign for Remain against either no-deal or a Tory deal that does not protect the economy and jobs.’"

Will this be their manifesto policy?

Or will they still pursue exiting the EU to join a customs union?

I am confused.

He will wait for the conference in september then support remain even though he doesn't personally. It will be the only way that he can hold on as leader as most of his cabinet seem to be going that way.He will say we are a democratic party and the members decide the policies so as not to been seen as a weak leader.Labour will not call a vote of no confidence in the government before they have officially changed to remain as it will be a total disaster in the polls after being beaten into 4th place last night.Once they do this that will split the remain vote as cant see them going the way of plaid or the greens and standing down for the lib/dems.

A cross party strategy was actually in the Leave.eu campaign manifesto.

"Within the next few weeks it is looking more and more lightly that the tories will lose their majority in the House of Commons, with bi elections and MPs talking of defecting.

What is the point of having a government that in effect can't do anything without permission from the opposition. "

This is now about the survival of the Conservative party.

On the one hand, Corbyn says Labour policy is to replace membership of the EU with membership of the customs union.

On the other, Corbyn says they will campaign to remain a member of the EU in the event of a referendum on the terms of Johnson's proposed exit.

I understand it is a delicate balancing act. But politics is all about communication - and that is virtually impossible to communicate succinctly.

The OP is not about the point of the opposition.

It's about the point of a minority government clinging to what little "power" it has.

Interesting to see the Greens and PC being able to put the national interest before party interest, and stepping aside to give the Remain candidate a clear run.

I wonder if that is a foretaste of a general election strategy?

Seems pretty sensible actually. If as a voter there is a pressing outcome I want, and the parties representing this view cooperate to deliver it. I'm happy.

Looking at the numbers, if the Brexit party and Tories had made a similar agreement, the seat would probably have been held.

The Conservative and Unionist (sic) Party may be the Brexit Party in all but name.

But a formal agreement between the two would cause meltdown in the Conservative Party. There would be an exodus of moderate MPs, probably to the Lib Dems.

I can't see how with a majority of one, no-deal will get through the house (if it was ever going to), it has been voted down consistently. Even though the Brexit party beat Labour in the by-election, unless a GE is called and the Brexit party increases to vote themselves out, the likelihood for no-deal is pretty much obsolete. Farage is sitting pretty for 5yrs is it?

Of corse he is, Farage has manoeuvred himself into a position where he will get paid from someone no matter what happens.

I just bet there is a clause in his contract that even if he got fired he will still get paid up, just like these football managers/footballers the and other over paid twats!!!

It was very much in the spirit of the Belfast Agreement, allowing NI to keep a foot in both camps.

The DUP shot it down.

A referendum of the people of NI may have yielded a different outcome.

That said, it probably would be academic - the extremists in Parliament would vote down anything to do with the EU.

That said, it probably would be academic - the extremists in Parliament would vote down anything to do with the EU.

"

You can understand why the DUP shot it down though. Any canvassing of the NI electorate could be jumped on by the south as a reason to unify

It's not up to the south.

The Belfast Agreement gives the people of NI the right to self-determination.

What was proposed may or may not have been acceptable to them, but we will never know because the Tory administration in London had ears for only one faction.

The people of NI voted to stay in the single market, the customs union etc. The backstop allowed them to do that.

The sooner we can remove the cancer that is the DUP from the governance of the UK the better.

"Yes totally agree it would be different in a GE,i would be a bit worried if i was the lib/dems and even more worried if i was labour i can see them being the 3rd party after the next election. How often in the past has the party in charge won a by election after being in power for so long not many "

i am surprised you wrong something like this... because of the way the seats are presently constituted... there is zero chance of the lib dems being the 2nd largest party...

the lib dem ceiling of everything went there way would probably be 100 seats top.... if they got to 70 i think they would be chuffed!

i think the more interesting question is who would be the largest "3rd party"... the lib dems or the SNP....

just because of the way the country lies... there are a lot of conservative vs lib dem fights... or conservative vs labour fights.... but actually not that many labour vs lib dems contests.... maybe that will change with this anti brexit lib dem vs this corbyn led labour...

but if the lib dem are going to pick up at lot of seats.. they will be at the expense of the tories in the south and south west....

The people of NI are part of the UK.

And the result of the UK referendum doesn’t need to be repeated ...

Jeeze!

I am talking about the backstop.

A referendum on the backstop.

For Northern Ireland only.

With only the people of Northern Ireland voting.

It didn't affect anyone else.

If they were happy with it, why should anyone else object?

No-one asked them. Only the nutters of the DUP.

It would have been a soft Brexit for NI.

Now they face the consequences of the hardest of hard Brexits.

There will be consequences.

And why would the NI electorate be asked?

Consequences of hardest brexit - we’re on with that old nit again ... jeez!

When will people understand they underestimated that the uk could actually vote to leave

When the history books are written, this extreme Brexit ideology will be seen as the most calamitous act of self-harm any nation ever inflicted on itself.

George Robertson, the former Defence Secretary and Secretary General of NATO, warned in 2014 during the Scottish referendum of the Balkanisation of Britain.

That is where we are heading, driven by an extreme nationalist ideology that will destroy the United Kingdom.

well _abio unlike you i was offering an opinion so fail to see how i am "wrong" you should work for the bookies with your crystal ball on how many seats the lib/dems are going to contest and how many labour supporters are not going to defect to either remain or leave parties as corbyn sits on the fence.

Those "nutters" are elected mps by the people of N Ireland and have every right to speak for the electorate.

Think that’s a bit unfair we did not treat the Australians, Canadians and the other non EU countries as aliens

"

Alien is a term enshrined in law.

The English Parliament passed the Aliens Act in 1705 as a means of coercing the Scottish Parliament into the 1707 Act of Union.

Similarly in 1905, the UK Parliament passed the Aliens Act - the first piece of legislation to control immigration to the UK (but in reality aimed at stopping the flow of Jews from eastern Europe to the UK).

Anti-semitism in the first decade of the 20th century was rife in England.

Get real.

Have you heard of the British Brothers League who toured the country, supported by MPs, demanding that "Britain does not become the dumping ground for the scum of Europe".

The large Jewish community in London came from the persecution of Jews in Russia and their migration west, to the UK and the USA.

There was huge resentment towards the influx, not least the competition for work. Violent resentment.

"How will moderate Conservative MPs feel about standing on a manifesto that pledges a No-Deal exit?

But if you go to any negotiation with no option of walking away you have lost before you have sat down, so the UK is fucked no matter what"

The normal 'walk away' option is to leave with no more and no less than you started off with. In the BREXIT scenario that would be to Remain not to Leave with less than we had before we started.

"As far as I know the only people with any rights of habitation in the UK after Brexit are the Irish."

Some Maltese and Cypriot EU citizens along with some other British Overseas Territories and Commonwealth citizens will still have some historical rights of residence here.

No you don’t actually.

There have been a number of inherently pragmatic and sensible solutions to many of the Brexit roadblocks, but either ideology, or beholdedness to the DUP (in this case) prevented a sensible solution.

Backstop V1 affected only the people of N Ireland. It delivered to them what they voted for, maintained the principles of the GFA and would have enabled Brexit to move forwards. Giving the people of N Ireland a Referendum vote on the backstop V1 was a sensible option.

The DUP prevented it happening.

"They are a minority as it is.

The DUP is propping this lot up.

Which does not augur well for sensible decisions about Ireland and Brexit.

"

we really have a new ball game ... the liberals and the conservatives are the only choices now ... Lab have fallen into an unelectable rabble (thanks JC) and the Brexit mob will I suspect melt away (but they did kill off UKIP and Tommy R which was in the national interest) ... sort of back to early 1920s politics.

i think "version 1" is the version that will eventually end up coming back... and they are going to dare the DUP and the ERG to vote against it if then means the alternative is this general election.....

the only good thing about the majority of 1 is that it bascially means the DUP have lost their power...

i think the ERG and the DUP will have ended up thinking they overplayed their hand....

I think option 1 is also why we cant play the security card (farage mentioned it again in LBC)

We have a solution thay coukd work. If we choose not to use it, we cant be that worried about security.

If ever?

If Boris plays it right, looks at the long term and invests in the Nort, Wales etc. Then the labour party, having list it's roots becomes irrelevant. Many of the now labour voting liberal elite in London will gradually switch over to the liberals.

Certainly looking likely with the shambles of contenders for next labour leader...
