Whoever leaked has at a minimum broken the official secrets act (and that is 2 years in clink there), and if it happens to be say a junior (or senior) Minister of The Crown or Member of The Privy Council there is the extra charge of misconduct in a public office that carries up to life imprisonment (I believe).
Regardless, I expect that shortly the US State Dept will be requesting The Palace of St James to replace 'His Excellency' The UK Ambassador to the USA.
Think this is without doubt one to watch. |

I see Trump's poodle Farage is up in arms calling for our diplomats head to roll because he's dared to do his job truthfully as he sees things in the states and because years ago Farage met him and judged he had pro EU views.

I am guessing it is more likely to be a ex minister or a political advisor (brexiteer) who has an axe to grind

I was not pointing the finger at a civil servant, I was covering all bases and not being politically biased, that was why I also mentioned the Privy Council. But I agree with you that the likelihood is that the leak was from a political source on the right. |

Me too. I can see that this harms a diplomat who some Leavers think is pro-Remain but damaging UK-US relations at this time when, if BREXIT goes ahead, we will be very dependent on that relationship, is very counterproductive to the BREXIT cause, as are the contents.
Regardless who it was who leaked this or what their motivations are, they should have the book thrown at them. Our diplomats must be able to report back what they truthfully believe without the fear that those reports will ever be read or known about by those their job requires them to report on.

because sir Kim had already announced he was going at the end of the year, and he wasn't well liked by the right wing and especially nigel farage, plus the journo who "released" the story isobel oakeshott is a know brexiteer with very close links to leave.eu, aaron banks, wigmore and farage
the story helps with the timing that now johnson can put in a "patsy" to appease trump in at that position as you basically made sir kims position untenable
bearing in mind the diplomatic cables in question come from 2 years ago... and a couple in the last 10 day, that says she may have been either sitting on them for a while... or someone just gave them to her
anyway i've been talking to friends in the FCO today and they are all convinced its come from either an ex minister (senior or junior) or a political advisor to a minister...
nothing do to with the civil service and everything to do with politics....

the man was doing his job! he is paid to give frank opinions back... if this was done in emails then yes thats careless, but this was said in diplomatic cables!
the uk government aren't apologising for the contents... only that the contents is coming out...
if i was hunt, and i had any spine at all... I'd be calling in the US Ambassador for "a chat"..... because the us president is very quick to talk about UK affairs on twitter all the time... but yet this is the reaction when anything negative comes back |

i'd love to say keep him there.... but his position basically just became untenable, which was the whole point on the leak....
they will say the timing of the leak/story in just coincidental with the new pm coming in..... this clears the path for a new pm to make the decision on who the man in washington is next...

Even his bit on trade talks with the USA.
Legally we can’t conduct official talks until we actually leave the EU.

I really don't think Sadiq wants or needs Jeremy H to defend him against Trump's attacks and it's not Jeremy H's job to do so. There are many people other than Trump and outside of the US that don't agree with Sadiq and his policies as London Mayor and I would guess that Jeremy H, along with most Tory MPs, is among them. I don't see many Labour MPs or supporters rushing to defend TM from Trump's latest Twitter tirade either.
And anyway, being the target of one of Trump's twitters probably does the recipient more good than harm, whether they're TM or Sadiq.

He just resigned. What an absolute travesty. The mans tells it like he sees it in so-called confidential dispatches as he's supposed to, someone leaks it, Trump gets upset and so he has to resign.
Am I alone in wondering why the perception of being the EU's bitch is so terrible but toadying to the US in hopes of a scoring a likely one-sided trade deal is fine? What a fucking state we're in. |

I’m not sure from the recording if Mr Johnson did actually get a chance to say anything, for Mr Hunt’s over-talking. What I take from it is that, whatever his views on the ambassador, the man simply is not bright enough to know what to say and how to say it.
He’s not a negotiator or a free thinker or even someone capable of reasoning a situation out. The danger with him is that that type of personality is usually extremely self-seeking and easily lead- not ideal qualities as a leader of a pack of sweets, let alone a country. |

I did, at no point (despite several opportunities) did LolBoris do anything other than squirm out of supporting Darroch. At no point did LolBoris affirm that a British diplomat can carry out their duties without fear of becoming political capital should their view not receive universal acceptance. So with that in mind what do you think ANY ambassador in ANY embassy is going to do when they have something less than flattering to report? |

I never thought Boris was ever in the running. He had to put his foot in as did Leadsome and Raab but they were/are never serious contenders.
With the constant gaffs he makes and his foolsome schoolboy attitude, if this was ever a time for him to slip in the twilight, it would be now. A tragic end to a dedicated public service career. His comments were obviously extracted for particular effect, so I'm assuming that very senior staff were involved, with much to gain.
He should have had full support from the UK government and prospective PMs in voting. Boris was shameful for not doing so. We've become a hollowed out shell of the great country we were.
All government ministers with scandals should learn and follow from the leadership of this honourable man - resign.

was there a "public interest" defence for the mail on sunday to publish what it did? if that is not the case then could the met police go to the journo who there source was for breaking the official secrets act?
just thinking out loud... just because the "journo" who broke the story, isabel oakeshott, is closely aligned to farage/banks/wigmore
it was a hit where a 42yr diplomat was backing knifed in the back..... |

Our Embassadors should receive full backing from our PM and our Government wherever they serve . To be fair our current PM , May and her Cabinet did give their support , as have 2 other people wishing to become our PM , Hunt and Corbyn , with the leader of the SNP in Westminster also adding his name to the list , all of whom showing their patriotism and solidarity with our Civil Servants who do a difficult job , not only in this particular case but all over the world ... There are also 2 other politicians who have designs on becoming our PM who have shown no support for OUR Embassador, instead taking the side of another country (USA) , namely Messrs Johnson and Farage |

There is a code of conduct among journalists about the protection of sources, but I do not believe it has any status in law.
No-one, including journalists, is exempt from the reach of the Official Secrets Act.
That said, it would be stupid of the police to pursue either the journalist or the newspaper.

i think the mail on sunday are now just getting out what they can now.... because with GCHQ helping the met police with phone records ect, they will know who is likely to have done it in no time.....
now its a case on just building a case around it......
