You want nothing to do with the EU - and here are UK forces going into action on their behalf.
How do you reconcile the two, especially after all the bile about the EU and its military aspirations?

I looked on the UK Gov website and did not see anything, which was surprising giving the role of UK military.
This is from the website of the Government of Gilbraltar:
"In the early hours of this morning, Gibraltar Port and Law Enforcement agencies, assisted by a detachment of Royal Marines, boarded a super tanker carrying crude oil to Syria.
We have detained the vessel and its cargo.
This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar Government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of European Union sanctions against Syria.
In fact, we have reason to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas Refinery in Syria.
That refinery is the property of an entity that is subject to European Union sanctions against Syria.
Yesterday we published Regulations and a Notice to enforce those sanctions against this vessel and its cargo.
I also gave a Direction requiring the Captain of the Port, assisted by the Royal Gibraltar Police and Her Majesty’s Customs to take control of the Grace 1.
With my consent, our Port and Law Enforcement agencies sought the assistance of the Royal Marines in carrying out this operation.
As the sanctions being enforced are established by the EU, I have written this morning to the Presidents of the European Commission and Council, setting out the details of the sanctions which we have enforced.
I want to thank the brave men and women of the Royal Marines, the Royal Gibraltar Police, Her Majesty's Customs Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Port Authority, for their work in securing the detention of this vessel and its cargo.
Be assured that Gibraltar remains safe, secure and committed to the international, rules-based, legal order."

Spain are suggesting the action was following a request by the US to the UK, and was carried out in Spanish waters....
(Spain of course challenges British ownership of Gibraltar - so they wouldn't want to stir up the pot now would they )

This could be the mother of all fuck-ups, then.
The BBC is reporting the action was based in intelligence from the Americans.
The Americans share intelligence with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and its offshoots.
Where is the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, btw?

A caretaker Prime Minister.
A Foreign Secretary devoting his time to an internal party election.
British forces would not be deployed in this way, especially given the huge political sensitivities around Iran, without clearance at the highest level.
Mrs May is screwed any.
Any or all of the above suggestions being true and the Foreign Secretary is screwed, too.
Which leaves Mr Johnson with a nice clean pair of hands and the keys to No. 10.

" Easy we can still be allies with Europe, still have the same exchanges over security etc, what has being in or out of the EU got to do with it?
You can now give me a load of techno crap but leaving the EU does not stop us being close allies and friends with them, life will carry on as normal |

"So the UK should continue to uphold EU law after it has left the EU?"
But but but but.... We don't want any part of those nasty European laws. We are going to have proper English laws of our own. Which just happen to be exactly identical to the European laws... |

Take no notice of these leftie re moaners guys.. they are just wind up merchants.
The EU has sanctions against Syria.. this includes oil. As we are still part of the EU we have every right to uphold the sanctions.... this tanker took the long way around S.Africa to avoid the Suez Canal.. a failed attempt to dodge the authorities... Iran knows its been caught red handed exporting to Syria. Now it's threatening UK shipping in retaliation...

The seized tanker is too big to get through the Suez Canal. Iran could use smaller ships but Egypt and Iran are not friends at the moment, and they would get refused passage through the SC. |

"Usually, supertankers do pass through the Suez but they are never more than 20 meters submerged. If a tanker is heavier, it can offload some of its cargo before entering the canal, which is then pumped to the other side of the canal. However, Saudi Arabia is part owner of that pipeline and would not allow Iranian oil going to Syria to benefit from the facility."
So they chose to take the less risky route, or so they thought! |

The waters around Gibraltar, according to Spain, are Spanish. Gibraltar is not entitled to any territorial waters because, other than the internal waters of the port, no waters were expressly ceded to Britain by Spain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.

Interesting to see Jeremy Hunt has turned to Europe rather than the US for help with escorting merchant shipping in the Gulf.
At least someone knows which side our bread is better buttered on.

Russia and China have no problems with Iran. They would rather see the troubles continue. Russia is under certain USA sanctions and China is having a trade war with the USA.

America First is America Alone.
Trump took the unilateral decision to walk away from the nuclear agreement and wage economic war on Iran.
It was an act of spite towards Obama and an act of allegiance with Israel.
The UK, Germany, France, EU, Russia and China - the other signatories - all want to keep it in place.
Russia and China are helping Iran with its civil programme.
None of them want to align themselves with the US on this one.

Totally agree. Mike Pompeo's hawkish and piqueish statements aren't helping, as it's now quite clear where the UK's priorities are..... And it's not going to war with Iran! |

This episode tells me two things:
a) the United Kingdom has run down its military to such an extent it does not have the capacity itself to respond
b) all this outrage about an EU Army is just bollocks - Britain's position is so weak it needs a joint European response to muster up the strength to take any action.
Is the penny dropping yet?
