Pompeo suggests US block Corbyn from being elected

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

According to a BBC report he suggested the US could/would interfere in Corbyn (and so Labour) being elected as head of government.

It is entirely possible, given the US’ history of meddling in other country’s affairs when they do not understand that country or feel the US challenged.

Is this a step too far?

The US will not and cannot interfere in British politics, just like it was bullshit to suggest that Russia had done so before.

Sure they can put out bullshit on social media, and hope to convince the idiots who spend their life on there.

I do believe that we will enjoy a much closer relationship with the US post BREXIT. But that will be about it, and certainly more about trade than politics.

Besides all that, Corbyn is unelectable...

I’d love to think you are right but history is not on your side, I’m afraid.

My mistake- it was The Times that reported it, not the BBC

Bristol East

Is this a reheat of a story from a couple of weeks ago, or a new one?

I remember seeing a transcript of a conversation with a Jewish group which asked what could be done if a Corbyn government was hostile towards Jews in the UK.

Pompeo said the US would not allow Jews to suffer and would step in.

The comments, when read in context, seemed reasonable (though I am not sure a question about other vulnerable faith groups might have elicited the same response).

I'd hope that a Corbyn government similarly would stand up against the persecution of minorities in other countries.

Sounds like it is the same one

It’s not quite as simple as standing up for faiths, I don’t think.

The Jewish questioner asked if the US would stand behind them if things got difficult for Jewish people in the UK- a perfectly legitimate question when meaning to protect life and limb.. Has the UK descended into a place where that is a fear from the far LEFT?

The response from Pompeo was suggestive of interfering to make sure a Labour government was NOT elected.

Baring in mind that there are very few Nazi right wing genocidal maniacs in the Labour Party, the emphasis must be on something other than life and limb. Other than self motivated interests, I’m not sure what else that could be about.

Central

It is wrong for other states to interfere with legal foreign election processes. There's been too much of it, in recent times

Jeremy Corbyn is a fairly stable and moderate politician, albeit with a very different stance and personality to Trump and his subordinates. Certainly there are likely to be hidden forces at work behind the scenes, such as via intelligence services, though this shouldn't be permitted by democratic states to alter election results.

So this is more about speculative questions that have been asked because of the uncertainty of British Jews?

It makes sense that they would turn to the US, after all that is where the largest number of Jewish people live, even more than in Israel.

If the question was would the US intervene if Jewish people in the UK were mistreated by a Corbyn govt, then the situation changes. Of course they would say yes...

They have no right to interfere with democracy in another country. Doesn’t stop them doing so, mind you, over and over again.

The US would not have a special relationship with a country with a Marxist, extreme left wing socialist mad hatter government. No way. Especially Trump.

That's the problem 'the idiots' have the vote and they're numerous in number, it was such complacency that allowed Trump into the White House.

Pancakes, syrup and sausage! I can forgive the US an awful lot just because of that one truly innovative breakfast.
