The real mess is that once the Courts stripped the decision on procedure from the Government, Parliament does not want to (possibly as we have a Remainer Parliament) or has not been able to (possibly as May has failed to engage) exercise a consensus.
This has more to do with the "hundreds and thousands" opinions of what interim deal should be pursued.
Perhaps if we had prepared to leave from day 1, we could then have given the EU a realistic plan for the interim.
