It is bizarre that under EU legislation compensation for delayed flights is paid at 250 Euros per flight regardless of the cost of the flight.
It is totally unjustifiable that someone can pay 30 Euros for a flight and then receive 250 Euros for a flight delay of greater than 3 hours .
At best the compensation payable should be set to a set percentage of the profit margin on the flight concerned. ( with a lower limit for flight costs at which no compensation becomes payable.
Any passenger who wants a full compensation package can of course take out one at the point in time when they book a flight .
What right does the EU have to set the compensation terms on non commercial terms with no reference to operating margins. ?
There are numerous pieces of EU legislation which just waste people's time and money.

Well if you dislike it this much then I suggest if you find your €30 flight is delayed and you get €250 compensation then give the extra €220 away |

I also find it extremely bizarre that anyone could complain about being given extra protection by compensation to start with European Express.
I was surprised that for someone as anti EU as yourself Pat that you'd have had a username with EU as the first 2 letters anyway

Why does the cost it has on me change depending on how much I paid for a flight ?
Who says the margin on a cheap flight is lower than the more expensive flights?
Should I get more compensation because I booked speedy boarding (as the margin in this must be 100%)
Is this a preemptive strike to blame the EU for budget airlines going under (and by preemptive I mean late. Do I get combo?) |

If an aircraft of 500 seats only has 2 passengers it must fly.
You cannot wait till it fills up.
You book at slot and that's it."

If someone pays £30 for an airline ticket it cannot be right than the airline may have to pay them up to. £400 in compensation.
Compensation paid should be limited to the lower of either.
1. The margin which the airline made on the ticket sale or
2..Annual profit after tax divided by the number of seats sold in the year.
You can hardly get fairer than that.
If to use your terminology the airlines considered passengers to be plebs why do so many passengers continue to fly with them. ? |

What your brilliant analysis fails to take into account is that if your £30 flight is cancelled, the cost of a replacement flight is likely to be a damned sight more expensive than the amount paid in your brave new world of compensation. Have you received EU flight compensation lately? |

Where did you get this nonsense from? One of your specialist publications?
Let's be clear. Compensation is to protect the passenger, nothing more, nothing less. The compensation is irrespective of the cost of the ticket because the passenger who is left severely delayed or indeed stranded has to make alternative arrangements. That is why it is €250.
Perhaps you prefer the good old days when airlines could overbook without penalty and passengers left stranded and have to look after themselves?
The EU cares for its citizens.
