Anyone following the goings-on in Spain?

The trial of the Catalan political leaders for sedition etc; the rise of the Francophile right.

The trials seem absolutely bizarre.

I am surprised the loony right haven't been salivating over the upcoming snap election and rise of first far-right party (vox) since the end of the Franco dictatorship in 1975.

Our resident white supremacists and ethno nationalists will be along shorty..to promote their vile agenda...

Think the jist of it is the far left are in support of independence and the far right are not.Another general election is coming as the catalan mps have withdrawn their support for the government.

It's easy to forget just how recent the concept of democracy is in some countries in Europe. A lot, in fact.

Very true thats what i like about the spanish it is very recent and they wont let it happen again. But i think they really need to talk about what it was like living under a dictator to their children i lived there 15 years and found that nobody liked to talk about it.

In Spanish law, it must be.

They tried to extradite the rest from Germany, Belgium and Scotland.

Spain issued arrest warrants.

Because there were no equivalent laws in the countries they had been arrested in, the hosts refused to extradite.

Or, in the case in Scotland, the Spanish authorities abandoned the case.

I could understand prosecution if there had been some violent or destructive episode.

There wasn't.

The ones on trial - the former Ministers - have been in custody over a year.

They are looking at jail terms of up to 25 years.

I think that is stupid.

I can't see any good will come by locking them up .Just more animosities.25 years sounds harsh.

The whole thing was a bit silly.

The Catalan government held a referendum that was illegal.

The pro-Spain majority boycotted it.

Madrid, instead of ignoring it, sent in the national police to smash up the ballot boxes.

The images on TV were terrible.

The result was a farce, but the pro-Catalan faction declared independence.

All a bit silly. But instead of ignoring it, Madrid dissolved the parliament, ordered new elections and issued arrest warrants for the ex-Ministers of the government in Barcelona.

They are now on trial for sedition and rebellion.

It's all very worrying. 101 years since the end of the great war and everything is going to hell again all over Europe. I include us in that as well.

I traveled the area in 1992 i hiked wadi rum in Jordan then onto Petra .Which was stunning ,then crossed the river Jordan into Israel .Which is a stream not a river ,a bit disappointing due to bible inaccuracies. Then onto Jerusalem which is beautiful.I was refused entry to Syria due to my family name or so they said .Secret police where everywhere at that time .Im surprised you hiked Syria in 2014.

Lovely area to hike.

Britain didnt join the fight against Franco. We declared ourselves neutral, even though we allowed Franco to set up a signals base in Gib.

Some Britons joined the International Brigade and fought Franco (2000 or so), as did some Irish republicans. Some Irish (Blueshirts) were briefly involved (750 men) They were not sent by the Irish government. For balance, it is also true that a few brits joined Franco's nationalists

Read a few books ffs, all this information is available

British volunteers joined the anti-Franco forces.

Britain did not.

Hitler joined Franco and sent the Luftwaffe into Spain.

His reward was the coal mines of Bilbao.

We often overlook just how sympathetic opinion among the the ruling classes in the UK was to authoritarian rulers like Hitler.

Not because they admired tyranny, but because they saw them as the counter to the forces of communism.

"Britain also took a lot of refugees from franco,s spain during the civil war."

The 80th anniversary of the end of La Retirada was last week. 500,000 refugees flooded across the Pyrenees (only to be badly treated by the french)

Portillo's father was a refugee who found asylum in the Uk

I went to watch Valencia play Celtic tonight at football.

The only political thing I gleaned was “ Non Hitler” spray painted on a tubeway wall.

I did see trouble on the spanish telly.

Pro-Catalonia people clashing with police.

Have the trials finished?
