Uncomfortable European truths......

"Walls and borders are great tools for keeping undesirables out of successful countries"....... said no one who had to live behind either the iron curtain or the Berlin Wall.

"It was America who put man on the moon"..... said Werner, a Major in the SS who was born in the German Empire.

Austria is regarded as a very expensive country to visit and Hungary is regarded as a very cheap country to visit. One is Western European, the other is Eastern European. Very, very different cultures, backgrounds, histories and both a long way away from Little Britain. Nothing at all to do with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Can I remove my tongue from my cheek yet?

Although the price of wine has increased everywhere, you can still go to Calais and pay less than £1.50 for a bottle of wine. Yes, I know, for £1.50 it won't be the best wine, but it will still be less than £1.50 per bottle which is less than half the price of the cheapest supermarket wine in England. And a budget of £2 per bottle gives a realistic chance of finding something very drinkable in Calais. Even if it is Leffe.

Donald Tusk wasn't having a pop at all Brexiters, only those who didn't and don't have any kind of a plan. Gotta love that man!

Around the time of the Referendum, I asked a good Belgian friend "How do the people of Belgium look upon the English people in view of the referendum result?"

He replied "Well, to be honest, you British people have never really known whether you want to be in or out of Europe, maybe you will now finally decide". That was more than 2 years ago.

Whilst spending time in Berlin, I came to understand how East Berlin and Eastern Germany controlled its population through spreading a belief that the population was being controlled and relying on the population to spread this belief. It all crumbled alarmingly along with the Berlin Wall. However, the important point is that the "controllers" were unable to realistically listen in to every conversation, read every letter, intercept every telephone call. They just didn't have enough manpower. What they did do though, was turn some ordinary people into "informers" just as our English Police forces encourage us to submit dash cam footage of fellow motorists commiting simple crimes and misjudgements.
