It’ll get shot down I imagine.

As a person who voted remain, I’d rather this whole shitstorm got chucked away but if we are going to leave we need trade deals in place. No deal isn’t an option and needs to be forgotten about.

The whole thing is a car crash. If you voted leave you were conned by a few millionaire Tory Toffs who jumped on a band wagon to further their careers. £17bn so far to prepare for Brexit. Stick that on the side of a bus

Indeed. And the people who live on it became so fed up with knocking six bells out of one another they decided it would be a nice change to try to get on with each other instead.

Here is a few truths...

The UK has always been a bully.

Its their way or no way.

And this whole pile of shite is another example.

Want to leave the EU but keep the benefits.

Take and take some more but don't give anything back.

Fine you don't want immigrants, then do the shitty jobs no English person wants to do.

You don't want everyone to come over to yours, fine then you will need visas to get into other countries.

You want to keep NI but don't want a hard border.Well that certainly put a stop to your dealings.

Wake up and smell the roses.

You cannot negotiate with yourself.

Mrs May has already declared the time for talks on the withdrawal agreement is over.

The EU has said so. The Euro Parliament has said so.

It’s a game of chicken to see who blinks first.

That will depend on who has the most to lose in a No Deal scenario.

No matter what happens, who gets into power, if we end up leaving with or without a deal or just give up.... as a nation we will never be happy. The whole brexit vote was so close, that it will divide and dominate politics and the people for decades. There is no win/win scenario.

I doubt it. There's plenty more twists and turns to go. 58 days to go and still no-one in the Conservative Party, the architect of Brexit, can tell you what it looks like.

Mrs May has agreed a withdrawal agreement with 27 governments but cannot get her own party to support.

Now her party has instructed her to re-open an agreement Mrs May said could not be re-opened.

The EU does not want to re-open it because it knows Spain, France and the Netherlands will want to renegotiate other aspects.

So it will come down to a choice between an agreement already rejected by her own party, no agreement or delaying Article 50.

The Conservative Party will be torn apart, either by its own MPs, its own supporters or the Leave voters.

I’m stocking up on popcorn.

i don't think he's wrong.... which is why where TM is so weak at the moment, no one wants her job, because if it does go tits up in a no deal situation , they only chance the next tory leader will have is to distance themselves from may as much as possible and say its all her fault!

which might just about work if you are a javid or a raab.... but won't work if you are a johnson or a gove

Because we are the 2nd highest net contributor (of 3 net contributors overall - the other 25 are on the take)

There's going to be a massive hole in EU finances once we're gone - and they know that the whole thing is likely to fall apart from then on.

Why would it fall apart ?

OK real world facts below, EU haters look away now

Full Fact figures 2014 - 2017 EU contributions.

We "the UK" are normally the 3rd or 4th highest contributor to the EU budget.

Without our rebate the UK would be the 2nd largest contributor behind Germany.

There are 10 yes 10 countries that pay more into the EU than they receive back.

All member states pay into the EU to start with then receive EU payments / grants for projects within their own countries.

Every member state gets payments for projects by the EU.

All that will happen is each member state will receive less in grants to ballance the books.

Was never much in it though. Very few politicians actually supported a second referendum.

The first one proved that people cannot be trusted to vote in their own interests or in the interests of the country.

Until we see what, if anything, changes after May goes back to ask for the same thing in two weeks that it took two years not to get.

There seems to be an odd perspective developing in this country that if we demand something, someone should provide it for us.

It's more of question of asking other EU countries to make up the shortfall in order to maintain the present budgets

Either the richer countries contribute more, or the budgets get slashed. Each other member country would have internal political pressure coming to bear.

It is often said that the Brexit vote saw past the negative financial implications and identified a nobler cause. If that is the case, then Europeans too are quite capable of seeing past purely financial implications.

Brexiters - "It's not about the money, it is about sovereignty and about freedom. It doesn't matter about the money and anyway, they need us more than we need them because we buy loads of German cars and pay in far more than we take out - they need our money."

Framing this issue solely in terms of numbers on a balance sheet is a reminder of how clueless Brits are about European politics.

May's somewhat deluded or doesn't care that much if there's a no deal exit: her month long delay, over Christmas, for parliament's vote spoke volumes. The EU have been very clear that they're not going to make substantial changes. Plus with just a few days to go before the potential exit, it's clear that the government should be doing far more. The extremists have been running the show in the conservative party, ever since the referendum, even though they're just a minority. An unforgivable excuse for a government, trying to stop its own party from disintegration.

"Well looking like it will a no deal and the End of what they call Great Britain I call call shite Britain. Laughting stock of Europe and I don't blame them. "

Yes, we are a laughing stock and not just in Europe, but in the world.

The Brady vote yesterday was a micro-encapsulation of the referendum itself in as much as a majority voted for something unspecified.

Referendum = This is the EU and these are its faults. Shall we stay with this and all its faults or leave and sort ourselves out along the way?

Brady Amendment = This is the backstop and these are its faults. Shall we stay with the backstop and all its faults or ditch it in favour of something else as yet unspecified?

In both instances, the majority voted for an unspecified future that will inevitable never satisfy all who voted for it for the simple reason that there is no cohesion about what the unspecified direction the future should be.

It is an infantile political charade that shames this country and all who live here. Politicians SHOULD be acting for the good of this country and taking solid and pragmatic cross party decisions to do what is right for the country. This charade and the charade of meeting Corbyn is for one purpose only....

1) "We tried to talk to Labour, but they would not accept that this deal is the best deal and talks broke down, it is entirely the fault of the Labour leadership"

2) We tried to explain to the EU that we have a consensus for a deal but they refused to budge. Their hostility towards the UK is the reason that the talks cannot progress."

See you all again in two weeks.

sort of...... it was only a "1 line" whip, which means that it was the party preffered option, but you can vote again it if you want.....

its the "3 line" whip where if you vote against it you have the whip withdrawn from you.....

"When ppl say we are the laughing stock of Europe what does that actually mean lol "

Seriously?

OK - Let's just take one moment from yesterday as an example...

Theresa May has spent the best part of three years informally and formally negotiating her withdrawal deal and on at least 6 occasions in the last two months, she has stated publically that the backstop is essential. She negotiated it and she owns it. Yesterday she backed an amendment that basically shafts her own deal and instructs her to go back and renegotiate something that she has said many times herself is not negotiable.

The last two years have seen multiple head in hands moments from senior politicians making the most crass, false and embarrassing statements in public and in Westminster and guess what... Your typical European voter is far more politically attuned than your typical Brit voter. They see the highlights of the slow-motion car crash that we experience day in and day out.

Mostly though - they know that there is no deal better than the one we already have and the verbal gymnastics that so-called serious politicians get involved with in order to make completely meaningless and shallow arguments is a nonsense to anyone looking in from the outside. Arguments such as... "For the UK, it is not about the money - we accept that there might be a short term hit but remember - the EU needs us far more than we need them. They need our contributions and we buy far more from them than they buy from us." These kinds of nonsensical and hypocritical statements are read on the continent.

The grand old lady of democracy has become a laughing stock.

Alternative arrangements means, um, er, alternative arrangements.

That’ll be the red, white and blue alternative arrangements? Or the tricolour alternative arrangements?

"When ppl say we are the laughing stock of Europe what does that actually mean lol "

Rightly or wrongly Britain is seen as a rather arrogant country, from a European perspective. Maybe to do with the history of the Empire. I don’t know.

So when it appears that our arrogance gets the better of us, for example voting to leave the EU and the ensuing fall out and infighting amongst the politicians. They laugh at us when talking about us as a nation.

This on top of the general ease with which people were fooled/coerced/scared into voting against their own interests. Makes us a laughing stock.

I personally don’t care if we are a laughingstock. National stereotypes are for people who are small minded. Americans get a lot of shit abroad since they voted in Trump. But the average American who travels abroad is unlikely to be a Trump supporter. So labelling them all as stupid isn’t helpful.

It's actually quite fascinating to watch UK politicians in action. In normal circumstances it's your undemocratic fptp voting system that amuses me but the whole brexit fiasco is taking things to be levels. As for the screaming and shouting over the backstop, that's just bizarre. All of the leading leave campaigners told you, and I'd, that technology was the answer when the border was raised during the referendum campaign. There was no need to worry about it at all, it wasn't a problem. Now the same people are telling us that the backstop is the dealbreaker here, yet the backstop will give way to the technological solutions as soon as they're found so its hard to see what the problem is since Boris et al have said that there's no problem finding solutions.

It would be funny if it didn't have the potential for such enormous tragedy.

I work with a lot of Europeans and some Chinese here who speak to their friends and family who understand not liking some aspects of the EU but don't understand why we'd leave.

I have colleagues in the EU, USA and India who ask the same thing.

Remember that other Europeans are only worried about external immigration (and gypsies, but that's a long-time prejudice). They don't understand what we're so upset about.

You don't have to believe me. You don't believe anything else.

Yes, new advice on the UK Gov website advising UK migrants in the EU to obtain private healthcare insurance from March 30.

Similarly, holiday-makers from the UK are being warned that the European Health Insurance Card is no longer valid, so travellers need to take out health insurance when leaving these shores.

Oh we talk about that too and to be honest there are a lot of similarities in the populist vote that led to Brexit and the populist vote that lead to Trump.

A couple of Attorney friends of mine have a theory that is as valid to Brexit as it is to Trump and that is that for any kind of new movement there is always going to be some core support but what core support needs to creat a victory is a large demographic to jump on the train. Their opinion in the US is that declining education standards has equates to the prevalence of the internet and whole swathes of Americans have become experts in their chosen fields through their own use of the internet. The difference however between conventionally educated “experts” and internet “experts” is that conventionally educated experts are faced with adversarial debate and challenges to their opinion and so have to consider and refute with detailed argument any counter-argument to their theories. Internet experts only learn what they choose to learn and far from have to counter-argue they have the ability to filter out any kind of dissent or contrary opinion to their bubble of expertise.

The argument then is that millions of poorly conventionally educated people have educated themselves via the internet on the things that they think are important and (by the power of the internet) have been able to exist in their bubble of expertise unchallenged. It is this very demographic that team Trump (and possible the Leave campaign here) tapped into.

The correlating arguments are compelling on both sides of the Atlantic.

The support for Trump and Brexit in the base is religious like in its commitment.

Details and counter-argument are brushed aside as irrelevancies

Criticism of the cause is often taken as a personal insult.

It's because many of the remainers in here appear to be living in their own Internet bubble or only socialising in groups of people with a similar mindset to them. You only have to look at what is happening all over the European continent with each passing election to see there is a growing movement of Europeans from all nations that want out of the EU. Just look at coverage of the yellow vest protests in France that are happening every weekend, many of them have Frexit written on the back of their yellow vests. Far from laughing at us a lot of Eurosceptic Europeans all over mainland Europe are envious of Brits that we are leaving the EU.

"When ppl say we are the laughing stock of Europe what does that actually mean lol

I think any reference to the UK being a laughing stock is directed at our Government and not it's people. I think it’s laughable that ppl actually think Europeans stand or sit about even talking about the U.K. never mind laughing at us as if they don’t have there own shit going on lol I’m sure too- hot will be back on soon woth a story of when he was sat in a bar in Spain and overheard some Europeans talking and laughing how stupid the brits are over leaving lol

Not so much Europeans but certainly my American colleagues and Associates are truly mystified. Please don’t be surprised or think it ridiculous that I talk to my colleagues, partners, associates and customers. it was a silly joke bud and tell your American friends we in the U.K. are just as mystified by what’s going on in the US I’m sure there are as fed up as us in the U.K. lol

Criticism of the cause is often taken as a personal insult."

too-hot you’ve just posted a great post very well said the last part at the bottom was bit rich tho coming from you as I remember you calling leave voters traitors and racists

I’m convinced he’s playing a character to troll everyone.

See above. I’m not having a pop at you. Your posts, the ones I see, are far more reasonable. The Centaur character posts things that are just too outlandish to be someone’s real opinion.

I know three people who voted leave (at least that I know of). One because the EU funding of the wall in Turkey, this person wants more refugees to be allowed in from countries that we contributed to their situation. IE, Syria, Iraq etc. One voted because they hate the Tories and wanted to see them self implode. And one because they had (and still have) little to know understanding of the EU and of the impact of leaving.

My work place has to have meetings how to deal with the impact of Brexit, as we are in a sector that is being badly effected. So not many people where I work are leavers.

I think most people with a strong viewpoint live in a bubble. The joy of fab is it helps get out of the echo chamber. Most of the people I know come from academia and are doing well for themselves. And so have a remain bias. My leave exposure (other than here) is from the family. My news reading tends to be the FT. Although I’m also an LBC listener.

My observation is those who post “news updates” with a leave bias tend to use the express, mail and telegraph. And have brexit YouTube channels. Remainers lean towards guardian.

"Yes, new advice on the UK Gov website advising UK migrants in the EU to obtain private healthcare insurance from March 30.

Similarly, holiday-makers from the UK are being warned that the European Health Insurance Card is no longer valid, so travellers need to take out health insurance when leaving these shores.

I've been having holidays abroad for 20 years or so, I always take out private health insurance before going abroad, this is not going to be anything new to lots of people. "

I've never ever relied on the EHIC card and always had very good private travel insurance.

All the things you just highlighted have been refuted.

The Gibraltar thing is not laughable. What is laughable is scaremongers like you Fabio were saying all planes would be grounded (that's now been proved false after the EU released its own no deal planning papers). As Gibraltar is a UK territory planes will be able to fly from Britain to somewhere like Spain or Portugal for example and then onto Gibraltar if they so wished. That's not laughable, that's just a statement of fact.

Mogg has not retracted the WTO 10 year exemption on border controls. Those are the WTO rules while a free trade agreement is being negotiated.

Mogg has not retracted the statement about prices being cheaper after Brexit, he made the case for it again at a recent Leave means Leave campaign rally, as outside the EU, we can reduce tariffs with the rest of the world beyond the borders of the EU's external tariff barrier (otherwise known as the EU's protection racket).

You constantly refer to Minford, as though he is a lone isolated figure, the reality is he's not, he's part of a group of economist's (plural) called the economists for free trade group. Other economists outside of the economists for free trade group also support Brexit such as former governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King, and Mark Littlewood of the Institute for economic affairs. Independent economist Steve Keen has also been highly critical of the Euro zone economic model. Even one of the chief economists at Germany's biggest bank has said the UK will thrive outside of the EU.

Migration watch is an independent body, true as stated on Google and it's own website.

Charlottesville again

You say I never condemned the nut who ran over a protestor, but I clearly condemned both sides (both sides means condemning the killer who ran over the protestor as well as the vigilante mob who turned up as part of Antifa carrying weapons who were intent on causing trouble and who went there looking for trouble).

Suggest you look up the meaning of the word 'both' in the dictionary.

Your last point 'where is the UK/USA trade deal?' Well if you understood EU rules you'd know we don't leave the EU until 29th March because article 50 lasts 2 years and we're still a full member of the EU until then. As a full member of the EU we can't sign our own trade deals with other countries. We can't sign a uk/USA trade deal until we've fully left the EU and the customs union. Theresa May's deal will keep the UK in the customs union for at least 2 years after 29th March called the transition period so we still won't be able to sign a uk/USA trade deal until the transition period expires.

Please don’t be surprised or think it ridiculous that I talk to my colleagues, partners, associates and customers. it was a silly joke bud and tell your American friends we in the U.K. are just as mystified by what’s going on in the US I’m sure there are as fed up as us in the U.K. lol

Criticism of the cause is often taken as a personal insult.too-hot you’ve just posted a great post very well said the last part at the bottom was bit rich tho coming from you as I remember you calling leave voters traitors and racists "

You have done it again... Completely misrepresented what was actually said.

Traitors. Remainers have long been referred to as traitors and enemies of the state for showing alleigance to the (sic) enemy EU. I simply stated that whilst most Remainers motivation was to protect the economic interests of the U.K., many Leavers were actively encouraging and promoting a plan of action that was manifestly not in the financial interest of the U.K. and therefore it was these Leavers who ought to be viewed as traitors for actively promoting a path that is not in the National interest.

Racists. To say that ALL racists voted for Brexit is probably true +/-1% and this is what I said, but this is very different to saying that all Leavers are racist which I have never said. Despite it being fairly well accepted that immigration and the “foreigner” issue was a high motivation factor for many Leave voters.

I stand by everything that I said and I never said that all Leavers are traitors and racists, because they are not.

Nowhere, not once, have I seen anyone provide an example of what trade it is the UK will be able to do better outside of the single market.

Not a single example.

The UK's trade with the rest of the world currently benefits from some 70 preferential arrangements agreed between the EU and countries and blocs around the world.

Those no longer apply from March.

Can anyone tell me:

a) How those agreements disadvantage the UK

b) The specific benefits that will accrue to the UK from scrapping those agreements and replacing with something as yet undefined.

And please, no platitudes - I mean specific examples in specific sectors, of how a $3tn economy will get better terms than a $20tn economy.

Will the US lift their ban on haggis imports, for example?

Wouldn't being out of the eu benefit the uk as any trade we strick it would mean any disposal money made after the regular service paid etc. We wouldn't have to pay a slice to the eu and this would remain in the uk. An that benefit would improve more better services.

Not sure I understand your point.

The question I was asking, really, was which sector, which bit of industry, is going to flourish under an independent UK policy in a way that it is presently prevented from doing so under the EU policy, and how?

p.s wheres the super duper uk/us trade deal... just wondering?

I will bump the post on “ten year”’periods and exemptions.

But on Minford, he’s used as a shorthand for the paper he and his economists wrote. Whether it his him, or a group, Fabio is asking for comments on their conclusions and the consequences of getting a positive GBP.

I never get why the Eu is seen as a protectionalist racquet, when there are known (non EU) models out there being suggested. Norway. Turkey. Canada. Add in recent deals with Sinagapore and Japan, and EBA and it seems a lot more open border.

10 year rule Daily Express "secret weapon" Dads Army nonesense.

No. He's wrong.

The 10 year ruling is only for the formation of a Customs Union or Free Trade Area/Agreement, and only relates to resulting tariffs, ie. it's got nothing to do with customs borders/controls.

WTO artilce 24e

See XXIV:1 = 5a, b, c

The "10 year" value is defined further down in XXIV:5 = 3.

i.e. two parties cannot form a customs union or free trade agreement which results in there being higher tariffs than there were before the agreement existed, i.e. it's the general practice and belief that the formation of a CU or FTA would result in lower tariffs being imposed than each/either parties' default WTO tariffs.

It's got nothing to do with leaving a customs union or single market.

We aren't in the Eurozone are we?

Only Migration Watch describes itself as independent

It's a limited company. It does not have to disclose its funding and refuses too.

Why's that then?

Not independent. Stop lying.

What compromise to US trade demands will we make to sign a deal? What will they want? Any idea? Do they need us more than we need them? Mythical jam tomorrow.

"When ppl say we are the laughing stock of Europe what does that actually mean lol

Indeed. The critical aspect of the announcement made earlier this week is that EHIC will no longer be recognised in the event of a hard Brexit.

That means that Expats will have to get long term health insurance (not travel insurance) but health insurance, like travel insurance, comes with a critical caveat.

The insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. The people most likely to have pre-existing conditions are the 50+ age group and this will be a very big deal for them.

It is just another example of how Brexit creates barriers when they are not needed and reduces freedoms for no reason.

Apparently the EU are now suggesting that our exit could be delayed if a deal isn't agreed by the end of March.

Is nobody in the EU paying any attention?

Two days ago, MP's voted down an amendment to extend article 50.

Just seen a report about Belgian fishermen who fish solely in British waters and how worried THEY are about a No Deal brexit.

The EU commission really do need to wake up. They can did their heels in as much as they like, but it is they who are increasing the prospect of No Deal.

It's a cunning plan - run down the clock.

The Europhobes in the Tory think Brexit is slipping away and get behind her deal.

The Europhiles think we are heading for a hard exit and get behind the deal.

Thing is, the EU has been pretty clear about article 50.

They will agree to delay for a constitutional reason - e.g. an election or a referendum.

They won't for the sake of party politics - e.g. to give the Tories more time with their crayons and colouring-in book.

"Just ask yourself this...

Why doesn't Europe want us to leave...?

That is right, eu wont fall apart if uk leave, that is a common misconception.
