Derry in Ireland
Jump to: Newest in thread
Today there was a very pre planned warning. This site won't let me type the words. Its in the Dailly mirror and happened around 8.30pm this evening. Think of Manchester the troube.
We need to put aside for a moment that no one was hurt but the public and feeling are sending unstellment.
It's no debt issue over but just to pray for hope it was a one off.. |

4 ppl were arrested heard on the radio. A new form of... Of the old.. And stated that all men but didn't say if those men were the ones caught on cctv just before. All was said. It's trouble I'm not going to speculate on why cause I don't know why.. Theory are not what the innocent people of Derry want to hear right now or those people in Ireland and around the world.. I was a bit surprised that it's hardly been mentioned on news outlets.. |

No surprise at all! UK newspapers didn't report all the incidents at the height of the troubles, and the mainland didn't take too much notice until the IRA started bombing the mainland- then we started taking notice! |

OMG! What idiocy!
Firstly, the idea that they are only gangsters and terrorists and should be treated as such is exactly the same attitude displayed in the 60's that gave the people of NI 28 years of the troubles and killed over 3500 including over 1000 British Service and ex-service personnel in Northern Ireland, and led to bombing on the mainland and eventually the deaths of 2 children in Warrington.
Lets be clear about this northern Ireland is a part of Ireland, the northern irish that are so implacably set against removal of the English Tory border in Ireland are the product of the English Settlement of NI by those dispossessed by the English Tory Highland clearances! The republicans are not terrorists, they are either freedom fighters or insurgents. Fact is the Good Friday Agreement was only possible because both Britain and the Republic of Ireland were members of the EU, and like it or not unless a way is found to keep the status quo on the island of Ireland then the troubles will return and they will not be restricted to Ireland but will soon be coming to a town or city close to all of us! And why? For the same reason we had the referendum in the first place. To keep a bunch of self-serving Tories in power for a while longer! |

I am a former RMC, I did 3 4 month tours of NI and went to the Falklands in 82. You can make of that what you like.
But I will tell you this, the 'troubles' in Ireland will continue until the English Tories leave Ireland, and to be clear the 'troubles' began when Henry VIII and then Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland in 1649. There is near 500 years of resistance to English rule in Ireland and like it or not if we were subject to the machination of an occupying foreign some of us would be b*mbing the bastards every opportunity we would get. So please stop being a reactionary on this subject and start looking at it objectively and don't conflate Wahhabi inspired Salafist international terrorism with Irish insurgents or freedom fighters depending on your position regarding the legitimacy of NI being a part of the UK (which by the way was an invention of Tories in 1921 in order to remain in power). |

Peace in Northern Ireland is still a delicate and ongoing process. Incidents like this are a stark reminder how fragile the situation still is. So with the looming Brexit the thought of a hard border is a scary one. |

I often think it would be a whole lot better if we didn't have the Island of Ireland split in 2.
So much death, misery & violence has been inflicted on all sides for so long coupled with the power sharing being dead on its knees for over 2 years now I think it's time NI went at it alone as an independent sovereign state of its own or reunification with the rest of the Island.
The Union is dead, the devolved power share is dead, it's been dead for a long time now but no one's willing to publicly admit it.

The demographic will change and that will effect the future, on the back of referendums in Scotland and the current one yet resolved when there is a call for one and it crosses the political division in the North then it will be hard for Westminster to keep ignoring.. |

Not feasible now certainly with May being in the DUPs pocket, and to enforce one would only kick off the extremists in the nationalist community..
Imposition never really works and the democratic process is harder for so called Democrats to argue against if that is how it pans out.. |

Well beyond my pay grade..
Think it would work similarly to the recent Scottish one in that it would just be in that area, anything else is open to it being subverted.. |

The demographics may change but you only need a 1000 terrorists for the whole thing to implode, if your given democratic choice and lose you have no mandate to then bomb your way to your chosen vote. |

If a border poll is held and passed in the six counties initiating the reunification of the country, then a subsequent one must be held in the 26 confirming acceptance of the proposal. The sequencing is laid out in the Belfast Agreement.
.
.
On another point that someone else made above about it only taking a few militants to bring the whole thing crashing down, I'm sure it'll be suggested that loyalist paramilitaries will fight against the inevitable reunification line they "fought" in the seventies and eighties. The difference is that back then they were financed, trained, organised and used by the British military. That won't be the case in the future. |

cheers genuinely wanted to know how a vote would work. as for republicans or unionists rearing there heads again i honestly hope the generation that has grown up without the troubles would give em a big fuck off to the dinosaurs on both sides |

Well when the original Dinosaur of the British Empire started inflicting its dire ways on the island of Ireland , it was bound to lead to other types of Dinosaurs.
You may not like it, but what happened in the North is as a direct result of British interference in things it had no RIGHT to be involved in.
If Britain leaves the Eu then the island of Ireland will be reunified within a decade.

Well why have you been banging on about it for ?
You talk about a friend losing a memeber of a family on 7/7 as though you deserve some sympathy or a pat on the head.
7/7 has nothing to do with the North of Ireland & other than people being killed in both circumstances .
