I'm not really au fait with politics and I need everything explained to me in the simplest terms.

I've just been reading that some MPs have put forward amendments to Mrs May's Brexit deal.

Now, I was of the understanding that the EU leaders have said there will be no more negotiation of the Brexit deal we have put forward. So how do amendments work if the EU leaders won't consider them?

Have I missed something?

nope you have got it the thing is the eu will consider amendments as long as we stay firm and dont take no deal off the table as it is the last thing they want as we have a trade deficit with them.

So an amendment will be a small change to something already in the deal? Something to do with the Irish backstop?

Bristol East

The UK Parliament can put forward any amendment it wants to the agreement.

For any to be implemented, the agreement of the other party is required.

The EU27 have been resolute in their stance to date.

Is the UK really willing to leap off the cliff into the abyss? Is the EU willing to absorb the collateral damage?

Who will blink first?

And if the UK insists on changing this and that, there is nothing to stop Spain, France or Ireland scratching at their sore points either.

basically most of them are symbolic... they are being tabled to see if any amendment will win tonight so it would give the government a steer as to whether there will be a consensus on a way forward...

the problem is that everything will end up being defeated tonight.... and we will be at a complete inpass...

It all seems rather pointless and a waste of time to me. I think it's making a laughing stock of our Government across the globe.

Admittedly, I'm not very politically minded but I have been trying to keep up with what's going on. It's finding impartial facts I find difficult.

if you want to know what time to start paying attention... probably somewhere around 6pm tonight.... may and corbyn will make final speeches....

7 pm the voting on all the amendments will start... around 15 minutes per amendment.... the really important vote is the last one (with will be the one around the entire bill), which will likely be around 9pm....

or you could be a political wonk... i have finished work for the day... and am going to watch most of the final day starting in about 15 minutes

bbc iplayer app.... bbc parliament.... or sky news app..

anyway speaker has only selected 4 amendments....1 labour, 1 snp and 2 conservative (not the ones the govt were really backing)... so all the outs the government thought they may have have been taken away....

interesting the lib dem amendment was not chosen... so no 2nd referendum amendment tonight either....

since its only 4 amendments... move things up about an hour....

so the big vote now is likely to be around 8-8.15 tonight.....

the grieve one was the one voted on the other day that caused the uproar about amending a business motion... so if may loses the big vote tonight, they will have 3 days to come back to the house and tell us what plan b is.....

leavers are going to say "bloody remainer bastard!!!" i like it thought, if only because it again tilts the power from a government who didn't really want parliament to have a say, to parliament having a much greater say in what happens....

kinda ironic in that people what powers brought back from brussels... then argueing against it when they don't like what that actually looks like...

Don't they want a Government who has power, who does what they asked? Or a Government that does what it wants? If it's the latter they might as well have voted remain.
