So as we saw the other day, the govt has allocated £108M for additional ferry services to help deal with the clusterfuck that will happen end of March....
...now it turns out, one of the companies they awarded money to, Seabourne Freight doesn't even have any ferries and has never run a ferry service before. And only been operating for a couple of months so far.
DFT has said: "As with all contracts, we carefully vetted the company's commercial, technical and financial position in detail before making the award," it added.
To which local Tory councillor Paul Messenger said: "It has no ships and no trading history so how can due diligence be done?" and "Why choose a company that never moved a single truck in their entire history and give them £14m? I don't understand the logic of that"

Next things I'd not be too surprised to hear - it donates to the conservatives or has some of them as directors, plus the cash is paid up front and even if the boats aren't needed
If the government doesn't vote and accept the deal, it should immediately cancel Article 50, so the country doesn't need to leave in chaos or without planning time |

Have to say thought, fair play to them, looks like Seabourne had the right idea setting up a new freight service avoiding the usual hotspots:
https://translogistics.uk/2018/05/new-english-channel-ferry-service-hopes-to-benefit-from-brexit-boost/
So maybe they are a bit of a gamble as an unknown, but if they manage to pull it off then they could do very well out of it.

They've been trying to get the Ramsgate to Ostende service restarted for a couple of years now.
There are plenty of ferries that can be chartered/leased but Ramsgate is a very small port and will need dredging out before services can recommence.
The bulk of the contracts have gone to ferry companies owned by the French and the Danes! |

OK... so I'm betting this must be a sheer co-incidence....
Seabourne's office is registered at Third Floor, 59 Mansell Street, London, England, E1 8AN which happens to also be the address of a Maritime Law firm Campbell Johnson Clark whose Director is called Mark Bamford.
Bamford.... Bamford.... where have I heard that name before?
Ohhhhh yes, Centy's favourite company JCB, whose owner Anthony Bamford is a Tory peer and one of their largest donors.
Must be co-incidence of course.

The is naughty of the government for a few reasons
1) sneaking out this document during the holidays
2) they say they were not aware of any problems... well Kent county council were at the Conservative party conference and they are saying they had a stand there telling people of this exact issue
That would be conservative run Kent county council
3) the obvious giving a contact to people with no boat and no shipping experience
4) if you look at the Danes... dfds have actual demanded to be paid in euros... smart of them! |

Is it unusual for a new company to have its legal address at their solicitors ? My guess is not, at the start. I suspect there is a point where they should “move out” and maybe you’d hope that would happen before they were awarded government contracts.
Is there any evidence there Mark Bamford (lawyer) is related to the Bamfords (JCB). I say plural as there is a Mark Bamford on JCB board. But a different one I think.
This looks a bit odd without going digging. |

It's quite normal for a company to have its registered head office at a solicitors or accountants office. Trading address being where the company trades from - if there isn't a trading address then it's probably a new start - off the shelf which can be set up with limited capital. |

Perhaps the more pressing question is why will be need more ferries?
Problems we are likely to encounter (according to all the scaremongers of doom) is to do with Customs checks at our ports - it has nothing to do with Ferrying capacity.
Surely adding more ferries would exacerbate the problem, not solve it |

Are you saying that all the bureaucracy and red tape are a good thing? That they are in place to protect us from the politicians? That is one strange way of looking at things. Mind you I never will understand remainers, especially those who probably gained nothing materialy from our EU membership."
A lot of the ‘red tape’ is to protect against people would would rather cut corners.
Anyone remember who it was on here a few years back who was moaning that as a plumber they had to buy boilers that met a common EU safety standard and they couldn’t buy cheaper Chinese ones that didn’t have the same safety standards.

In this case the company want to use a different route. It actually (as far as I see) actually makes some sense. Longer sea miles, but synced with drivers rest hours and specifically for freight. Avoids existing hot spots.
Just the company had no boats, no history, and only a few months to get it all going.

There's no gain, minimum rest period required in 9 hours driving is 45 minutes. Ramsgate crossing takes 4 and a half hours Dover 75 minutes, Oostende is less than an hour's drive from Calais so there's no time gain there either. The reason Dfds and P&O don't operate from Ramsgate is it's defunct even as a freight only terminal (Sheerness operates to Zeebrugge successfully using this model) so why choose Ramsgate?, I can see a plethora of directors loans and consultancy fees being paid to the shareholders while at the same time rattling the can to the Dept of transport Thanet district council and the Belgian government before being wound up with no assets to recover debt from. |

"So as we saw the other day, the govt has allocated £108M for additional ferry services to help deal with the clusterfuck that will happen end of March....
...now it turns out, one of the companies they awarded money to, Seabourne Freight doesn't even have any ferries and has never run a ferry service before.

The volume of traffic does not increase.
Only passes through much slower.
So why extra ferry space if there are no extra vehicles? |

Because the new ferry routes will relieve the Dover Calais run. They hope to ship more to Ramsgate, Newhaven, Portsmouth, Poole etc |

The problem is the Customs handling capacity at Dover and Calais. By having boats dock at other ports it would help to relieve the bottle neck.

I think we're all getting a little carried away here.
To me it's simple. Either these ferries are never going to be needed (because BREXIT doesn't happen or it's no where near as bad as we fear) or it does; in which case I doubt an extra ferry running into Ramsgate is really going to solve the problems anyway.

But I'm not allowed to change my mind now new information has come to light am I? I thought that was against the rules, will of the people and all that?
Still, points to a bit of a shit-show that they were even awarded the contract in the first place. Sounds like a good demonstration of things to come.

Until they bounce the government into an advance to lease the vessels or cover insurance with a chicken and egg premise, and given that this contract is starting to look a marquee policy the government will cough up.

Seabourne's office is registered at Third Floor, 59 Mansell Street, London, England, E1 8AN which happens to also be the address of a Maritime Law firm Campbell Johnson Clark whose Director is called Mark Bamford.

Must be co-incidence of course.

Not quite right. While Ramsgate needs dredging, it can take most ferries with the exception of the super ferries (Spirit of Britain or Spirit of France).
The extra ferry capacity is likely to come from charters which are small enough for the fringe Channel ports.
I would be interested to know where you read that Ramsgate is not large enough. They ran car and freight ferries out of there to Dunkirk and Ostend for years. It hasn't shrunk...simply silted up a little. The infrastructure is still more or less intact. Believe me, I work within the SE ports industry. |

Anyone seen Channel 4 news tonight?
Seems this is a non issue...
As in the company is a non company, its contract terms 'taken' (or should that be stolen) from a takeaway food retailer with a home delivery service, and its CEO is a little Trumpster who has a history of corporate welshing on debts.
Regardless of legality it says a lot about the Tories that rather than admit they made a mistake they and Graling are coming out defending what they have done and saying that everything is fine when clearly it is not.
What a shower of shit these tories really are! But hey, the popular media (owned by big business and billionaires keep telling you that JC and Labour would be worse, so it must be true. (Just like Millie Dowler was alive because she was deleting her mobiles inbox.) |

As someone pointed out today elsewhere, how did this company even *know* that this contract was up for bidding on? It wasn’t advertised, it didn’t go through any standard procurement process (eg OJEU). So how did a virtually nonexistent company even know the contract was happening to bid for it?
I ran an SME that tried to get govt work for many years. It is really pretty bloody hard. And the number of procurement hoops you need to go through is pretty insane.
So how did they do it?

As a commercially viable venture Ramsgate harbour is 40years out of date. The largest vessels it can accommodate are from the Enterprise era of Townsend Thoreson (later named Pride of Canterbury/Bruges/Kent after the P&O takeover), capacity is the name of the game hence the Spirit megaships running out of Dover. There's so much goodwill and keeness for Ramsgate operate but ultimately it needs to present itself to a serviceable future, the RAM want to see it expand the marina playing up it's train connections to London and proximity to Margate but even then that's debatable as to whether it can move from a loss to the council to an income stream asset. |

"Anyone seen Channel 4 news tonight?
(Just like Millie Dowler was alive because she was deleting her mobiles inbox.)

Well, it was a rhetorical question.... I think it is plainly clear that something is going on behind closed doors.

This is a key point and i would hope that someone in Parliament will demand an investigation next week.
It is beyond absurd that this could even be thought to happen - let alone has actually happened. |

Maybe some tories were looking for pizza whilst they were working out who to give a few £millions to and came across what appeared a composite between a pizza delivery website and a ferry company?
These awards of £multi-million contracts are likely to be highly suspect imo. We should create a fab ferry company that delivers anything, anywhere, in case any more contracts are given out, without sufficient checks being made. We could then operate it ethically. |

lol a fab ferry company would be awesome
A good point I just read: if Seabourne are not getting paid until they deliver, then who is currently paying to dredge the harbour? As seabourne don’t have any cash.

Seaborne shareholders are paying for the dredging operation, despite the port being owned by Thanet District Council. |

From their own money ?
Also, I think seaborne freight (uk) has only one shareholder, suggesting there is a holding company somewhere ... |

"Just a thought... from what I read due to the narrowness of the berths at Ramsgate, apparently there are very few vessels that can get in there. Most are already in operation. So I guess anyone with one up for sale or lease can pretty much name their price now.
-Matt
Not quite right. While Ramsgate needs dredging, it can take most ferries with the exception of the super ferries (Spirit of Britain or Spirit of France).
The extra ferry capacity is likely to come from charters which are small enough for the fringe Channel ports.
I would be interested to know where you read that Ramsgate is not large enough. They ran car and freight ferries out of there to Dunkirk and Ostend for years. It hasn't shrunk...simply silted up a little. The infrastructure is still more or less intact. Believe me, I work within the SE ports industry.
Thanks for that information, it is pretty much what I expected. I hope the new measures regenerate Ramsgate, and bring in new business from all over the world.
There's so much goodwill and keeness for Ramsgate operate but ultimately it needs to present itself to a serviceable future, the RAM want to see it expand the marina playing up it's train connections to London and proximity to Margate but even then that's debatable as to whether it can move from a loss to the council to an income stream asset."
There are only 2 Spirit class ferries and they will be running out of Dover. Every other ferry...Pride class, NPC/Euro Seaway class etc would and in most cases have been berthed over the years in Ramsgate when laid up.

But the Central Office woman who ran his campaign is guilty and has only escaped jail because her husband is seriously ill. So original point stands. |

I’m going by the facts being reported. Apparently the approach is too narrow for two way traffic so the proposed schedule and capacity doesn’t take into account pilotage in and out. And further regarding the bay sizes:
“Furthermore, the seafarer said, both parties seemed to be ignoring the limitations imposed by Ramsgate’s third berth.
Unlike berths one and two, it operates under a linkspan system, which is only capable of handling a certain type of vessel, of which the numbers available are limited.
“So number three berth will be left open, unless they can persuade DFDS or P&O to lend one of their ships,” he said. “And you can’t use a traditional stern-loading vessel as it would damage, or even destroy, the linkspan equipment on the port side.”
From an article online from a site called Loadstar, but also reported in many other places too.

No, he's been banned from Calais because the french don't like Grayling's no deal planning to re-route some shipping away from Dover/Calais in the event of no deal to use other UK ports. Taking trade away from Calais and the French to use other ports in Belgium and the Netherlands. The French have now thrown a strop about it and banned him from Calais. |

Because Seabourne Freight is partly controlled by someone who used to work for Sea-France which was a French government owned company. And since it was government owned, it could NOT go bankrupt.
Maybe that's what seabourne were planning to re-use and old Sea-France ferry?
Oh, and it might surprise you to know who owns Sea France / My Ferry Link, the Chunnel and a back up freight only ferry?
There's a reason why the Burger King "services" in Folkestone are operated by Autohof. (because its an European company) and there is a reason why the food is beyond crap (it's in England and has to compete with Ronald & Tim).

Today he has cost the UK tax payer £33m and a report on the privatisation of the probation service (which he was responsible for as Justice Minister) cost the country £500m. Not a bad day's work for the most incompetent minister in the history of the country |

Grayling , on behalf of the Conservative ( you can trust us with your money ) government , said in the House of Commons that the deal struck with Seabourne was such that unless they delivered on the agreement they wouldn't receive a penny of tax payers money , the good news for us tax payers is that they haven't ,, the bad news is the same deal has cost us £33million |
