Major Incident - Migrant Boats Crossing The Channel

Surprisingly quiet on here about this emergingly, more prevalent occurances.

The last couple of months has seen an increasing number of attempted and completed Channel crossings by migrants.

* Why is this happening now?

* What is the sudden motivation?

* Is it really a “major incident” ?

* What can/should be done about the already hundreds and possibly soon thousands of people who are risking their lives?

Seemingly their main sim is to get picked up by the Coastguard - once that happens seemingly, it is s win for the Migrants.

as the other person has said..... brexit is one, and the clam and balmy conditions in the channel (basically 5mph wind at the mo!!)

the other problem is that the UK only has 5 of the "cutters" the border force use to patrol the channel...

1 of them is in for servicing/repairs at the moment.... the other 3 are actually ironically in the MED helping rescue migrants there...

the double edged sword is the more patrol boats you have out there the more the smugglers will put people in non seaworth vehicles knowing they would be intercepted and brought to the uk rather than going back to france!

kinda both....

last year only 19 people needed rescueing from attempts to cross the channel via this sort, since november... the number off people that needed rescueing from the channel via this sort of attempt has been nearly 150

We drew most of the lines on the map that have created states that are inherently in conflict.

Now that we have gotten involved and created chaos and failed states don't think that conflict won't come here. Who do you think they blame?

It really is important to consider the bigger picture.

In the last 150-200 years, the species has exploded in terms of numbers.

For tens of thousands of years, the growth of the human species was moderate and sustainable.

It took the species 300,000 years to reach the figure of 1 billion in the year 1800.

The age of science and industry occurred.

In just two hundred years since, it has grown to 7.6 billion

Since the Second World War, we have been adding a billion people to the global population every 12-15 years.

Our population is more than double today what it was in 1970.

How do "we" sustain that? "We" have no choice.

Sub-saharan African is where population growth is expected to be greatest in future - more than half the increase during the rest of this century will happen there.

When population growth occurs in economically poor regions, relatively speaking, people migrate in search of better prospects.

That's an awful lot of people likely to be heading to Europe.

The only solution I can see is to build up the economies of those countries expected to produce wave after wave of migration over the rest of this century.

The extra billions that will be added to the population this century will mostly be in urban centres in poor to middle income families .Who consume relatively little to affluent first world citizens.

The problem has never been about population the problem is consumerism and the scale and nature of that consumption.

I am thinking this is like the board game MONOPOLY !!! Jump past Mayfair, the elderly and the homeless. pass GO ... you get £200 a house, car, medical and dental care. And a bag of Haribo's from fab Brexit remainer's The navy is doing their bit in the channel and med. Perhaps the government could also send the QE 2 to collect some migrants from the Mexico US boarder. We can't let the US democrats have them all.

It's a terrible situation for people to be put into - likely due to paying smugglers to ferry them across. The driver seems to be the increasingly hostile tactics that the French authorities have taken against migrants closer to the coast - they smash up temporary accommodation, trying to drive them away. It's of course harder, as there's been massive attention on trucks, to prevent them sneeking on etc.

The UK certainly need to support the French - perhaps in addition to the UK staff already posted there, more need to be sent. Though I'd be concerned about seemingly supporting tactics that are horrific. Things will only get worse post any Brexit, as there will be reduced cooperation, almost certainly.

I can also see how trafficers would potentially bring people and dump them into the channel, closer to the UK shoreline, if there were rescue boats that were present around the clock. The shortest days of this time of year also mean that there is an incredibly long period of darkness each night, which helps to provide some cover, when they're setting off.

As the water is so cold and dangerous, it's frightening what could happen. It's likely fortunate that winter is milder than usual this year - but this could also be a factor that helps tempt people into danger. The people are desperate but should be given refugee status in France, if they are due it - it's likely a reflection on discontent there that they are being pushed onwards.

He's certainly interested in the job - and was reluctant to confirm any numbers that would be a target limit, unlike Theresa May, who had targets and consistently missed them by miles.

To put the numbers into perspective

So far this year 60,000+ migrants have reached Spain by sea (mostly...some in Ceuta and Mellilia)

So far this year over 600 have drowned trying to get to Spain

We are talking tiny numbers and, thankfully, no deaths across the channel

apparently this wave of immigrants are claiming to have come from iran, which is an interesting development...

in sept iran signed a visa free travel agreement with serbia (not in the EU)... serbia did this to increase tourism.... then a funny thing happened,

in the first 6 weeks 40,000 people had taken advantage is this agreement.... but only 28,000 have returned, meaning 12,000 overstayed

as soon as iranian and serbians realised what was happening... the agreement was closed!

there people basically got into the EU via serbia.... most actually again have gone to germany and france and claimed asylum there as there are big ex pat iranian communities in both countries..... it is a few who are trying to make it to the UK

Seems to be a huge miss understanding of immigrants and refugees..... Refugees are fleeing their homes. Fleeing oppression. Fleeing the bombs that we supply to nefarious and corrupt regimes.

Can't remember which Tory and brexit supporting fabster (I seem to remember they lived in Surrey or Hampshire) it was, but a year or 18 months ago I told them that as brexit arrived so would the boats coming over the Channel. Because like it or not as we leave the EU club there is less incentive for those in the club to help secure our borders and I asked how they were preparing for the influx. At the time I was laughed off as a crackpot and told I was fantasising and they were totally secure thank you very much. I wonder if those living on the South Coast and in the South East still feel so confident in the ability of a single border patrol vessel (and a RN that is so gutted it had to send a single minesweeper to escort a Russian carrier group through the English Channel last year) to secure our coast. Maybe they think their local constabularies will be able to step into the breach and apprehend that start to turn up on south coast beaches as the year progresses?

Or is the penny beginning to drop with our 'buggar you Jack, I'm alright' Tory supporters, that having gutted every arm of central government (including our armed and civil defence forces) to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy was not such a bright idea? Are you beginning to work out that you can't actually afford to buy your own security and that you need to contribute more to the common kitty to pay for more protection?

Its a horrible thing to come face to face with the reality some things can't be done better by the private sector regardless of ideology.

However if an immigrant can travel a few thousand miles to get here and doesn't speak good English and arrives with little money in a foreign land and yet can steal your job then you're probably really, really shit at your job.

The answer is simple.

Firstly, spend more at the frontline states on the refugees. Bring family groups here and provide them with a British response. This will be costly but these are people in need and have run away from oppression and war.

Secondly, do not pay a penny to the economic migrants that enter here from the safety of Europe and have abused the rules on asylum by not registering at their first safe haven.

This will immediately stop reckless attempts to cross the Channel by boat or in vehicles. It will also bring us established, stable family groups who remain together and not the predominantly young males that make up the majority of illegal entrants.

Sorry but spending more and taking in more will upset one side and deny recourse to public funds will upset the other side.

Unfortunately, we are a soft touch for those in front of us and are not strong enough in doing the right thing for those on the front line.

I think that you are placing the solution in the wrong place.

There are two types of immigrants; economic and refugee (be that war, famine pr climate change)

The solution is to fix the problem at source or close to the source.

It's always the same people who don't "believe" in climate change because it might make their luxurious (by any global standard) a bit more expensive. They also don't want to spend money on international development.

Even after screwing our currency, we can buy far more in Africa and the Middle East than here.

If we spent money on education and economic development in those parts of the world you would kill the draw. Most people would rather stay at home. They don't go through what they do to get to Europe for fun.

From what I can tell, the smugglers aren't being caught., they don't give a shit about the lives of those they abandon. They're not in the boat if its picked up.

More resources should be sppent on catching them., chade em down and give out a proper sentence . Problem is its a lucrative business. Some reports are they get £30k per boat

2) that sounds like a deterrent... you mean like that if found guilty then the traffickers are not only sent to jail, but are fined per person that they get caught bringing in!!!

There are rules to follow when people arrive on your territory and seek asylum.

Internationally-agreed rules.

Someone arriving here from France, I imagine, would need to be able to demonstrate their wellbeing is in jeopardy in, um, France.

Mind you, the numbers are tiny compared to the experience of other European states.

Yet somehow it becomes a political crisis.

I suspect the numbers of people arriving in the UK and seeking asylum have not changed, only the method of their arrival.

Being openly racist and suggesting inhumane "solutions" is OK. People feel safe talking and behaving like this because they feel that they have the support of the establishment and, ironically, because the same foreigners that they detest are behaving the same way on continental Europe.

People will chose to believe what they want to. It seems that a lot of these migrants are Iranians fleeing religious and sexual persecution. They have entered through Serbia, who for a while allowed Iranians in without a visa. Smuggling gangs were then happy to facilitate onward movement westbound.

Those wishing to come to the UK were the ones with the money to pay for the crossing, hence the influx of Iranians

The Home office is a poison chalice! Now that getting on a lorry/train is almost impossible that are taking to boats. It is the UK's responsibility to protect its borders ie the coastline of the English Channel. These migrants only "break the law" when they arrive in UK waters without a visa.
