Dominic Grieve secured the meaningful vote clause about a year ago - despite hostility from the ERG group and other Brextremists.
Luckily for us all, he won albeit by just four votes. Had he been defeated, we would have been on the road to Theresa May’s Brexit and neither Labour, the DUP, extremist Tories - in fact no-one could have done a damn thing about it.
I seem to recall at the time he was getting the traitor and enemy of the people treatment.
Maybe we should all just pause and remember why it is so important for Parliamentary Democracy to actually work. |

"But there is no compulsion for the meaningful vote to be held before the maybot forces us out of the EU as far as I know."
But today’s climb down would not have happened without the potential of the meaningful vote taking place tomorrow.
Rightly or wrongly, May has had to respond to the threat (to her) from Parliament.
Without the vote - her deal would already be signed and sealed. |
