Surprised to see no mention of the U.N. report yesterday that accused the UK Govt of being in denial about levels of poverty in the U.K.
Seemingly 50% of kids are on the poverty line and it will get as high as 66% for single parent families whilst 1,500,000 people are classed as destitute,
Whilst some people remain convinced that our biggest problems are our friends in Europe - poverty in the UK increases, education is a disaster and the NHS needs a large scale overhaul.
How are we so distracted from things that are really important? |

It's risen in line with the rise in immigration..... maybe.. |

There is no quick fix.
What is needed are real investments in practical education and industrial infrastructures beyond a quick fix to secure votes at the next election.
We don't need to throw money at something covering 5 years. We need plans in place that will improve our underlying economy for 50.
Despite the soundbytes of all parties....no-one seems to want to begin the process. |

Just read the full statement.
It really is a damning indictment of how callous and out of touch this Government is.
The war on poverty is now a war on the poor.
I'd recommend people read it.

It's a long read and that will put some ppl off!
The paragraph which stated it was "disgraceful " a country as rich as UK should have this level of poverty!
To those on who frequently pontificate about foreign aid - the clue is in "a country as rich as" - those who have it (wealth), keep it and increase it at a significant rate.
14m at risk- let's ask every MP to donate say 2.5% of their salary to the poor - wonder how many would? The reason I suggested politicians, is because they are so poor and getting more than their "worth"!

It was a shocking conclusion that should leave the governments from 2000 onwards ashamed of themselves. They have carefully managed to deprive so many of the poorest in society - whilst the Chancellor feels it right to give tax cuts to the t
Richer amongst us. Smoke and mirrors, alongside divide and conquer tactics. Brexit will help them to finish the job of more universal impoverishments for the masses. |

Where did you come up with that fairy tale?
The fix is not only quick, it is easy and simple. Reintroduce the post war fiscal rules and policies that reduced the national debt from 250+% of GDP to 40% of GDP and rebuilt a country that had endured 3 years of aerial bombardment and 5 years of total war in 30 years. And force politicians to represent their constituents rather than those who cushion heir bank balances.
And a good place to start would be a progressive income-tax system with a top rate of 95% on individual earning over £10,000,000 PA, have a corporation tax of 50+% (but allow a 100% write-off on capital investments) and a 110% tax rate on all untaxed monies transferred overseas.
Make every rich fucker pay their tax and close the double Irish with whatever tax loophole! |

Yep, I do.
I did read your whole post and I would have thought that someone who infers that they are ever so insightful would have been able to see the flaw in your first post and how my post fixed that flaw. but seeing as your clearly not as quick as you purport to be let me help you see the big picture.
In a capitalist economy you need capital to make any investment. Governments raise capital by taxation. There are 4 sources of taxation, the population (pole taxes), spending, property and income. The first 2 by their nature are limited in what they can raise and place more of a burden on the poor than the rich, the third places more of a burden on the rich (they are the property owners) and the fourth can be either depending on how it is designed and administered.
If you had understood what I said you would have realised that I addressed every problem we have with financing investment as well as dealing with individual as well as corporate tax avoidance in a way that would increase the wealth of the country as well as solving all the problems caused by under investment (education, health, social care etc.).
But hey, what do I know? After all I did not dissect your whole post so I must be talking garbage. After all it is clear from your 2 posts that you can educate me on this subject. So how about it, want to educate me? Maybe start by explaining how beneficial it has to the UK over the last 35 years to move the burden of taxation from income and profits taxes to spending taxes, and how not taxing untaxed income being transferred out of the UK has improved all or lives. Maybe at the same time you will tell us all why corporations that make billions in profits each year in the UK would stop trading here if they were forced to pay 50 or 60 or even 70% tax on those profits. |

You can "over tax " - like we had in the past 97.5% for some people hence the brain drain!
Whilst I understand where your coming from, personal higher taxation is not the whole answer - just leads to tax evaision.
Multinationals hire the best brains and find the loop holes - So plugging those are the first step.
However, there always has to be a reward for risk but it's what is fair?
Finally we have got to take some responsibility for the way things are. We want everything for nothing - we want a deal - there is the problem. One person wins the other loses! |

"Is the UN report referring to relative poverty or absolute poverty?" Not sure but poverty is very relative.
Poverty occurs mostly in this country because of drink and drugs, there is very very little real poverty in this country if any.
Before you do gooders attack me I have worked in Birkenhead one of the poorest towns in the country with a lot of these people, they are scum in my view, ask any of the people who work in this area and 90% of them would agree with me.They start with good intentions and realise the truth.
Poverty exists all over the world,im Africa,Asia,USA etc but in comparison this country has none.
Medicine available to all, food in food banks if you want it,state handouts etc.Yes compared to most in Britain they are in a type if poverty but not real poverty.
It is why I m proud of this country so very proud |

Go down the road to Birkenhead or over the water to Liverpool and tell that to the people who are homeless and sleeping on the streets or to the mothers who need charity food bags to feed their children or tell the families of the people who are dying of starvation weekly! |

As for your view that poor people are scum I think you need to take a long hard look at yourself because it takes a very special sort of self entitled faeces and human excrement to think that abject poverty is deserved and those in it are scum. |

What’s your definition of “scum”?
I would suggest that being poor isn’t an attribute of “scum”.
Spitting on people and lacking ampathy for other humans is more of a behaviour i would associate with “scum”.

I agree with Ray, reffering to poor people as scum is helping nobody. A lack of public sympathy is helping to push people into poverty. Universal Credit is the worst ever so called “reform” of the benefits system, and will lead to many suicides IMO. |

It is more than that.
The coalition government was a period of non-stop demonisation of people on benefits - in public life, in the media, on the telly.
It prepared the ground for austerity by dehumanising those who would become its victims, the ones who would suffer disproportionately from a recalibration of public spending, taking money from those in greatest need and giving it to those least in need.
Smearing millions of people as "scum" and "vermin" is classic propaganda that lets the better-off shrug their shoulders and turn a blind eye to the cruelty being inflicted in their midst.
Austerity was nothing less than a cull of the weakest in society, yet still we get people saying they deserved it because they are sub-human. It is the same mindset of the ordinary German who stood by and watched the Jews, the gays, the travellers etc rounded up and transported on trains. They shrugged their shoulders, too, because years of dehumanising propaganda had eroded their empathy.

The report referred to the "wealth" of this country and how the Govt (and seemingly a lot more) are in complete denial about the number of people who are in poverty despite the country being wealthy enough to do something about it.
What I found most embarrassing about this report is that as far as I can remember through history it was this country that was reporting and commenting on poverty elsewhere. For the UN to be reporting on poverty in THIS country is quite shocking.

I fail to see how your last paragraph addresses my points. I do see a political manifesto but not an answer to my premise that we need to properly invest rather than a short term fix of throwing money at the problem.
It's a shame that you cannot see that. Personally, I would prefer to enable the entire population to benefit from a better economic infrastructure where they have a stake rather than assume that taxing is the answer. A better long term aspiration would be to give everyone a greater stake in wealth creation rather than simply to take from the rich and give to the rest?
Or do you fundamentally disagree that everyone should have an equal stake? |

Or do you fundamentally disagree that everyone should have an equal stake?"
I agree that everyone should have an equal stake, but probably not in the same way that you do. |

While there will be many in "poverty" in relation to the Country as a whole the amount of people in "poverty" is very small in relation to the whole population and it is from my own personal experience that the majority of the poorest people I have known have their circumstances due to their antisocial disgusting behaviour.
Though I fully appreciate there will be many hard up through no fault of their own. |

The poor have been getting poorer since 1974.
We used to have closed national markets(in the West) that politicans chose to implement full employment in(post war Keynesian economics), that was the cause of low disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest, after the 70s high inflation period which affected the wealthy far more than the poor the whole world changed(all predicted in 1947 by a polish Economist called kalecki) to open international markets, open international finance, open international Labour movement, this makes inflation low and labour cheap and stops in reality governments taxing the wealthy (they just move there money around and out of liabilities through the international markets we've created).
Basically the first world working poor have been getting less to pay for the third world working poor to get more.
Of course the main problem of this 40 year policy is political populism.

"Is the UN report referring to relative poverty or absolute poverty? Not sure but poverty is very relative.
It is why I m proud of this country so very proud
What’s your definition of “scum”?
I would suggest that being poor isn’t an attribute of “scum”.
Spitting on people and lacking ampathy for other humans is more of a behaviour i would associate with “scum”.
Are these poor people the ones often referred to as 'oiks' and 'riffraff' by remainers on the Brexit threads by any chance?
Yay, you’re here to link a leaver calling poor people scum to remainers.
You’re nothing if not consistent.
I'm just wondering why you take exception to them being called 'scum' here, but when remainers call them 'oiks' and 'riffraff' on other threads you don't bat an eyelid? "
So I’m supposed to scour every thread looking for injustice and if not I can’t critisise someone for calling poor people “scum”. I hadn’t mentioned Brexit. You brought that into it.
You’re posts are consistently poor in quality, poorly thought through and lacking any meaningful content. Blindly defending any leaver posting no matter how silly, and ridiculing anyone who does agree with your world view. An embarrassment to the leave side. |

Globally, millions have been lifted out of poverty in the last few decades through liberalisation of markets etc. But that will be scant consolation to the family shivering in the cold in some hollowed-out town, unable to rub two pennies together.

I voted to remain because I didn't want to be made poorer myself personally.
however staying in the EU with free movement of labour, capital and finance would NOT have made the poorest richer anyone who thinks this is just lacking in basic economics and history.
the fact is the working poor are the ONLY set of people who will benefit. |

There are 16.4 million children living in poverty in the United States. That's about 21%, compared to less than 10% in the U.K. |

Very basically the the main parts of the world economy are Europe, Asia and the United States.
One of them has been in net importer for 40 years while the other two ain't.
Take a wild stab in the dark why "poverty" has been increasing most in one while decreasing in the other two?.
For those that can't guess I'm going to tell you that Asia will now start suckling on the European tit of France, Italy, Spain etc etc.

What is needed are real investments in practical education and industrial infrastructures beyond a quick fix to secure votes at the next election.

Before we start I am a working class man and I am a Labour supporter/voter but we are suffering from austerity because of the likes of Blair and Brown.
They sold the gold at the lowest possible rate and told everyone before hand what they where going to do.
They then made massive grabs on the pension funds.
This lead to those over 40 buying all the small houses to make sure they had something to secure there retirement.
Hence the house prices went up so no young couples could afford to buy a house.
Banks started lending 4 to 6 times the salary to people so they could buy there first house.
This was ok for a while until people ran out of their money to pay their mortgage and then bang.
It went horribly wrong and we had to bail the banks out to the tune of £50000 per person or lots of money.
The then Goverment who had borrowed loads of money too where now in the shit.
Hence when the coalition came to power a note was left. There is no money left Yeah.

This is what does my head in with liberals, you've been blathering on for decades about stopping poverty in the third world and when we do it you just blather on about stopping poverty in the first world, well we've done it by taking money and jobs from the first world that paid a living wage and giving them to people in the third world and to create jobs there requires CAPITAL to leave here and go there, hence the rich getting richer while the poorest (globally) also got richer while first world poor got poorer.
I sometimes wish we'd just voted on liberexit |

EVERYBODY.
There's a general reason the poor are poor in this country, there toss at doing anything, they lack motivation and make crap life choices, third world poor rise from poverty much faster and tend not to be generational poor (they just lacked jobs, any jobs).
Most poor people in this country are poor because welfare provides them with just enough to keep them from rioting.
It's the way of the world, China will eventually produce the same equal amount of "poor" as we do, any system that says to 66 million individuals here do your best will have x amount that does great, X amount that does average, and X amount that does shit, capitalism just produces the lowest percentage of the shit bracket. |

Ah I see where you are coming from and yes you are correct.
I should have explained further.
We have a General election as per usual where the people vote and the winning party Governs the day to day stuff.
There should be cross party panels on things like education NHS and defence to name a few.
These cross party panels will decide say on the NHS that in 20 years that we will have a functioning NHS where no one waits more than a day for an appointment or the elderly can be treated with dignity in their dying days.
Or in Education how do we make sure everyone has an excellent education and there are no tuition fees to pay for a degree.
Wouldn't cross party panels with long term plans be good

There's a reason why the mainstream media just skirt around these issues without being frank about the reality of things, politicians and the wealthy are utterly feared to death that eventually the poor will come for them in another French Revolution style of history!.
Personally I think Zuckerberg and his ilk have probably got it coming to them, there deceitful liers of the worst kind shouting racist at poor people for not wanting a wall to a country while living in a walled mansion Island.
Trump gets that, it's how he got elected along with orban and the rest, the working poor in the West have seen 21 century globalism for what it is, an attack on them and there jobs.
Now me as an employer, I love immigration, best thing I've ever had, this working poor work harder for less and don't whine about every little regulation. |

Yes, but that's called "socialism", and in order to have it, socialists must be in power. |

"There is no quick fix.
Ding ding we have a winner.
I have been saying this for years.
All parties need to come together and decide where the country would like to be in 5 years 10 years and then 25 years.
Country and its people must come first then the party.
Not every party will get what they want. No point changing things every 5 years.
"Glorious 5 year plan"
If only we could be more like China and their hundred year strategy.
They tend to throw you in prison if you disagree though.
Managed to nearly stop drink/drugged driving too.

That's the problem with brexit .No cross Party discussion.
Just winners and losers .If we can't do it with brexit I doubt education or health care will fare better."
It appears the civil service are screwing us not the parties.
I would have loved to see some cross party talks but everyone has been squabbling wether we are in out out, a people's vote etc.
Trying to sort there own vested interest rather than the country.
As a remained I have accepted I lost but if you look at some of the shite on here no wonder Europe are laughing at us.

"Very basically the the main parts of the world economy are Europe, Asia and the United States.

The notion of a mixed economy where these things are important is "loony left" as far as most are concerned.
As I said, you'd need a socialist party in power to affect this.
Your "common sense" is not sensible to those on the right (New Labour included) - they don't give a fuck about the population as a whole, only capital. |

Maybe if the Police concentrated on what they should be doing instead of pandering to all sorts of shit there wouldn't be this shit going on.

Yes, but that's called "socialism", and in order to have it, socialists must be in power.
They will be soon enough.
Not for another 10 years or until you at least get rid of this Labour esk party that's in at the moment
The current Labour party has more Socialists in it than I've seen in my lifetime. There's still the odd Blairite hanging on, I suppose.
These are not real socialists these are lying cheating thieving scum.

"There is no quick fix.
What is needed are real investments in practical education and industrial infrastructures beyond a quick fix to secure votes at the next election.
We don't need to throw money at something covering 5 years. We need plans in place that will improve our underlying economy for 50.

"Is the UN report referring to relative poverty or absolute poverty? Not sure but poverty is very relative.
It is why I m proud of this country so very proud
What’s your definition of “scum”?
I would suggest that being poor isn’t an attribute of “scum”.
Spitting on people and lacking ampathy for other humans is more of a behaviour i would associate with “scum”.
" It is a very general word but in this case applies to the people that take drugs etc instead of feeding there kids etc |

"There is no quick fix.
What is needed are real investments in practical education and industrial infrastructures beyond a quick fix to secure votes at the next election.
We don't need to throw money at something covering 5 years. We need plans in place that will improve our underlying economy for 50.
Despite the soundbytes of all parties....no-one seems to want to begin the process.
A Chinese empire is coming that believes in order over freedom, and elite governance over democracy .
Wouldn't cross party panels with long term plans be good
Yes, but that's called "socialism", and in order to have it, socialists must be in power.
You can't send your kids to public or grammar schools but I do.
The vast majority have BUPA of other private medical schemes.
You can't have a big pay rise but I do.
Your racist if you complain about the migrants coming to your area but you will not house one in your gated community.
At least the Tories are honest about screwing us over.
Corbyn lives in a gated community??
Doesn't he live in Islington??
Which of his 3 houses is in Islington
How many is he allowed to have ?
As many as he wants when the Tax payer is paying
I bet he gets a big pension come retirement .Does that boil your piss aswell. "
What he won't donate it to the people there is a surprise.
I bet he won't pay inheritance tax either.

Where to start?
I am the one who used the words 'oik' and 'riff raff', they were part of the final shot in a post dripping with sarcasm. That any of those on right who post in this forum think that they make political points by calling black white and that others then choose to join in (just like the Tories we see in the House of Commons) is despicable, and you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves. Fact is we all know homelessness and abject poverty are rife in this country and getting worse, but this will not change until the Tory policy of reduction of government size coupled with the redistribution of wealth upward of the 40 years is reversed. All this talk of well planned investment in infrastructure being the way forward and the cost of lifting many in the third world out of poverty requiring the poor in the west to become poorer in the West is a total bollox! Fact is investment needs capital and while 4 families have 50% of the worlds wealth (and getting more annually) hidden away in offshore tax havens where the vast majority of the locals are so impoverished they are amongst the poorest people in the world nothing will change. It comes to something when one of the wealthiest men in the world is recorded saying that he fears that the population of the world are about ready to turn on the filthy rich and all the forelock tuggers can say is the poor are scum rather than hear what those they so faithfully support really think.
Guess you think if you help the rich push more into poverty they will reward you. But when the time comes just like Czerniaków's Jewish Council you and your families will also go up the chimneys or into the open pits when you are no longer of use.
There is a class war in progress, on one side there are probably less than a million in total throughout the world on the other side are the rest of us! But some (many) of us are so wilfully blind to the reality of what is being done to us that they actively collaborate with our enemies because they think that will get them special treatment! Just like the 'good Germans' and those other 'Aryans' who served the Nazi's.
FFS! think about what you say to me regularly:
Will your lying, Will your exaggerating, Will your using too much hyperbole, Will your a loony leftist, Will you hate the rich!
Whats wrong with you people? Don't you get it, our roads are falling apart, our railways are unable to function reliably, our hospitals are so overcrowded the sick and dying are being left untreated in corridors, our schools are continually asking pupils parents to buy essential supplies, the streets of our cities are full of homeless while there are homes being kept deliberately empty because they are 'investments' and our local governments spend money moving the homeless on while everywhere is being gentrified in turn and of course that requires the removal of undesirable elements (making more people homeless!) and every 'improvement' to every public service is in reality another de-investment and back-door sell-off with the proceeds being passed to the wealthy and quickly transferred out of the country and therefore out of the economy.
Maybe if we took control back from the filthy rich who are stealing everything from us all rather than looking to blame the poor things might actually start to improve again.
But hey, as I say on here so often what do I know? Now don't get ill over the flu season unless you have the money to afford to call a private ambulance to take you to a private hospital that can deal with acute emergencies. (Not many of them and I doubt there are any here that can afford to use them.) |

There always has been a class war going on since the year dot.
The Church used to keep the poor in line
Now it's the Banks that keep the poor in line owned by yes you have guessed it the Church.
Yes the very super rich have being playing divide and conquer by keeping us fighting amongst ourselves.
That again has been going on throughout history.
It is more noticeable now because of things like the internet and the tv.
There is no where to hide anything now |

"There's a reason why the mainstream media just skirt around these issues without being frank about the reality of things, politicians and the wealthy are utterly feared to death that eventually the poor will come for them in another French Revolution style of history!.
Personally I think Zuckerberg and his ilk have probably got it coming to them, there deceitful liers of the worst kind shouting racist at poor people for not wanting a wall to a country while living in a walled mansion Island.

There are different types of immigration.
Years ago for every 10 doctors and 10 nurses that the UK trained we took 2 doctors and 2 nurses from overseas and trained them at our cost and when they had finished we sent them back home.
Now we are taking the best doctors and nurses from these countries and saying to the UK residents we don't need or want you.
Now that's wrong.

Your grasp of economics is entertaining....ly bad" .
I suggest you actually read some economics then, that's not my personal opinion that's straight from main stream top field economists mouths |

"Is the UN report referring to relative poverty or absolute poverty? Not sure but poverty is very relative.
It is why I m proud of this country so very proud"
Shameful post |
