Do you think with the Democrat gains and the momentum building behind calling for a"people's vote" we're seeing the beginning of the fight back again populism at last?

In a word, No. If the Democrats expected blue wave would've truly happened then they would've took the Senate last night too. The fact that the Republicans kept the Senate will be seen as an endorsement of Trump and his policies. I fully expect Trump to go on and win a 2nd term in 2020 now.

As for Brexit, no 2nd referendum is on the table and the government couldn't be clearer that there won't be another referendum.

do you? also, the way you use the term 'at last' to conclude your post, you sound relieved that this may be the case. if it is the case, are you relieved and why?

Let’s hope they temper each other now.

There has been tell on here of the following.

“The inevitable Blue Wave”

And “The inevitable second referendum”

Neither have materialised so people need to work together in an ideal world to navigate the shit show we find ourselves in.

What a timeline we are living in

You're correct it is normal for the Presidential party to take losses in Mid terms, but Trumps losses last night were no where near as bad as Obama's during his first Mid terms.

Obama lost 6 senate seats during his first mid term elections and Trump has gained Senate seats last night.

Obama lost around 60 House seats during his first mid terms and Trump only lost around half (30) that number last night. The numbers for Trump in his first mid terms are better than Obama's.

Canterbury

The problem that Democrats have is whether to look to the left of the party to challenge for the presidency as anti Trump or whether to look to the centre right to try to reclaim the centre ground.

It's a good thing we don't have the same quandry here isn't it?

I agree. But then I think the true meaning of BREXIT is economic melt down and I think Corbyn could definitely deliver that with or without BREXIT. But at least quite a few in his party are talking more sence than most in the Conservative party when it comes to the economy and BREXIT.

"Do you think with the Democrat gains and the momentum building behind calling for a"people's vote" we're seeing the beginning of the fight back again populism at last?"

Í think we've got a long way to go still. The result last night, while not bad for the Democrats, was actually quite good for the Republicans. It will make life tougher for Trump but definitely leaves the possibility of a second term very much on the cards.

With regards to a People's Vote: That depends on if May can negotiate a deal with the EU and get that deal through Parliament. If she can't then I believe the calls for a 3rd referendum will become unstoppable.

Well peoples choice if they do vote him back - they know what they were voting for- and what they will get. He handled the news conference with the utmost statesmanship - not. Did you see his "gofer" she was funny like a jack in the box.

If 'populism', which isn't defined by the op, refers to the employment of widespread deceit and hate-mongering that's been used, then I would hope that any decent person would wish to end such abhorrent practices forthwith.
