I wrote a letter to my MP (who I already knew was a Brexiteer), stating my objection to Brexit on the grounds that there isn’t a single benefit to Brexit and it will in fact make the country worse off both economically and socially. He replied:

“There are many times when people vote in elections in ways which may not be in their interests, but that is how democracy works.”

He didn’t even try to defend his position. He’s seems to be just accepting we will be worse off and going with that!

I have gone back to him, futilely I’m sure what with his mindset, and pointed out that the three pillars of Brexit are nonsense and encouraged him to do what’s best for the country on the 19th November debate about ‘Stopping Brexit in the case of a No Deal’ and dump the stupid idea.

Pillar 1 – Economy – a) We will make up the shortfall from reduced trade with the EU with trade from the rest of the world. Well seeing as we currently do more trade with Ireland than all of the BRIC countries combined, good luck with that!

b) We will make favourable Trade Deals with non-EU countries to increase trade – We already have favourable trade deals from being in the powerful EU trading block. No replacement deals are likely to be as favourable when trying to negotiate them on our own and the talks will take years!

Pillar 2 – Sovereignty – In our rapidly globalising, integrated and standardising world, being apart will just end up with us being left behind. The tabloid soundbite of ‘Foreign Un-elected bureaucrats telling us what to do’ is utter nonsense which can be easily shown with any 10 minute google search on how the EU is organised and run. If even Switzerland (a famously go it alone State) knows it’s in their best interests to have regulatory alignment and be a member of Schengen, it’s a no-brainer that we should too.

Pillar 3 – Border Control – Given that legal immigrants, both short term and long term are net contributors to the economy proves that the other tabloid myth that they are “all here just to get free benefits” is also nonsense. The employment numbers alone speak for themselves. As for stopping illegal immigrants, well that has been an ongoing issue since the Nation was born and wont stop because of a change of national status. The answer is give more money to law enforcement.

You missed his point completely! At the moment you can't see "the wood from the trees". Here is his point:

As an MP he's completely protected until the next general elections! If it goes badly wrong "IF" - we will see soon enough he's not going to be made redundant is he? His salary and benefits are "safe". Now depending on how long he has been an MP - if he's got 15 years service he has a pension pot of just under £1m - 20 years and it's £1.2m. So there is your answer. When an MP loses his seat he gets "redundancy " - but a lot more generous than the average. So there is your answer. Perhaps you should have asked him if he would resign of it goes wrong?

Be there benefits or just negatives to Brexits, Brexit must still happen & happen as was told in the lead up to the 3016 referendum that would happen.

Ok then by your admission, say you vote Tory at a General Election & they win but they say fuck it the BNP can rule instead, you'd be happy with that.

how would the bnp rule without a majority ?

If you voted tory, and part of their manifesto was to cut tax to 18% on the basis gdp was to increase, and it didn’t, would you want your MP to vote against a budget which still put tax at 18% but cut spending in NHS. Or would be okay them moving away from their manifesto in light of changing conditions ?

(Appreciate this is a crude brush, but the bnp example was cruder)

There's no changing conditions though, nothing is different about it, people voted by majority to leave the EU & leave the single market.

Government said they would act upon the result.

It really couldn't be clearer.

There's no point in holding referendums saying they WILL act upon the result & then saying fuck it we'll do something different.

It just leads people to think there's no point fucking voting at all & only strengthens the notion of the ruling elite stepping on the working classes as if they don't matter.

FTFY.

Tbf I dont entirely disagree. We voted for brexit. We then voted for a May led government to lead the negotiation. The will of the people is therefore whatever they arrive at. If tories rebel against May, then I think it leaves the door open for a second reforendum. Especially as the “no deal” scenario is not clear... the Eu is more than just a trade agreement so WTO isn’t the full answer. Really it’s not no deal, but no deals.

You’ve kinda glossed over the key point that the referendum was advisory and that elections are an actual constitutional process.

Oh come on. To say the world or even just this country hasn't changed is basically denying that time doesn't exist.

Also, the Government at the time may have said they would act on the result, but we have a different Government now and could have another one if a general election happens. Government isn't static either.

And neither is public opinion most importantly. If most people haven't changed their minds then another vote would show that. If a lot have then any decision to carry on regardless makes a mockery of the "Will of the people" argument.

Do you normally have the parties manifestos on your ballot paper ?

I'm not going down that silly pointless argument route again, people knew what a leave vote meant very clearly.

With the greatest of respect. That’s complete bollocks. People had no idea what “leave” meant. The various groups campaigning to leave promised all kinds of bonkers, and contradictory bullshit (much of which people still believe).

There was no government policy at that point, the referendum was advisory only, and was intended to direct the government which way to go. There was no plan, no policy, no clue what to do. Some would argue that is still the case.

Yes, I was mistaken when saying a vote to leave was to leave both the Single Market & Customs Union, I don't think Cameron or Osbourne actually mentioned the Customs union.

My point is, while I'm firmly a remain voter I believe it makes a total mockery of having votes on something the Government state they will uphold the result then ask us to vote again instead.

So yes I got the CU bit wrong but we should still leave the single market & disconnect from the 4 freedom's.

1. The only side that had the authority to say how things would be was the Government, no one else.

2. The Government said they would uphold the result of the referendum.

3. The Government stated a vote to leave would bring us out of the Single Market. "This nugget of information did not need to be on the ballot paper" it was all over the news in the lead up to the referendum, people cannot say they did not know.

My main point is the Government must forge ahead on the result of the referendum and maybe one day a future Government may learn to never ask the generally uninformed public to decide on something so complicated as this ever again.

That in my view would be the best outcome from this whole shitty mess.

I would counter that by saying that the government campaigned to remain. And I would further argue that people who voted leave weren’t necessarily listening to the government, and were listening to Aaron Banks or watching Farage point at pictures of brown people or thinking “yes I completely believe the £350,000,000 going to the NHS thing”.

So to say people knew what they were voting for and it’s a specific version of Brexit, seems incorrect. And who the fuck knows what type of Brexit we will end up with anyway.

The leavers on here have different views on what they want, and that’s just a small sample of data.

I half agree. This should be the nail in the coffin for referendums. It’s clearly shown that people can’t think critically and can’t vote in their own best interests.

But we should still try to attain the least ruinous option for the country. The option that protects workers right and the environment.

Can you point me to the manifesto or White Paper that aligns to the change option on the ballot paper?

I cannot recall anything like that, unless you are thinking of the manifesto written on the side of a coach.

Theresa May did take her interpretation of the result to the country in a manifesto 12 months later.

Whether she got a mandate for its implementation is a moot point.

No, I think a major reason for the paralysis afflicting the UK today is because there was no plan, no manifesto, no White Paper, setting out what Brexit looks like in 2016.

All that most people can remember is a red bus.

At least in the Scottish referendum, those advocating change came forward with a White Paper detailing what a Leave vote entailed.

By comparison, the UK referendum was a farce.

What you should bear in mind is that the referendum was "advisory" - however, the media and social media "took control" and the government followed.

Having said that it does need to happen, if only to prove, who was right or who was wrong. Sadly, those who had "nothing to lose" will see that they could lose everything IF it fails!

This is among the weakest of all leave arguments.

It’s akin to saying, the car is going at 90 miles an hour towards the cliff. Don’t bother trying to change direction, don’t bother talking about it, just accept it and be glad we’re going to drive off the edge of a cliff.

And as for “dignified”, you should read the leavers rants on here. Haha.

I’m not sure I agree some of the leave MPs have been so dignified in victory. Plenty of dummies there... (sic)

"I wrote a letter to my MP (who I already knew was a Brexiteer), stating my objection to Brexit on the grounds that there isn’t a single benefit to Brexit and it will in fact make the country worse off both economically and socially.

The answer is give more money to law enforcement.

its all wearing thin now .the people who voted remain are still spitting their dummies out . the people who voted leave are being far more dignified about things . I'm glad we are out .we all should be .yes there is freedom of speech but there is also a time to grow up "

its only just begun .If you think this all ends in march your insane. The country will be split for your entire lifetime.

Mega lolz! Haha. “Leavers will have what they voted for in March”! Are you suggesting leavers want to be poor and oppressed and live in a backwards nowhere-ville country?

Also I don’t think you’ve understood “split” in this context. You’ve actually said leavers won’t be split, only remainers will be. IE, a split between leavers and remainers. Split inception.

"

There was nothing on my ballot paper about the single market. Was it on yours?

Do you normally have the parties manifestos on your ballot paper ?

I'm not going down that silly pointless argument route again, people knew what a leave vote meant very clearly.

Can you point me to the manifesto or White Paper that aligns to the change option on the ballot paper?

"

what do you mean..

"that aligns to the change option on the ballot paper"

I really don't get what you are on about.

Two choices on the ballot paper:

- the status quo

- change

Where did the voter go to find the prospectus for change?

There was none.

So the only mandate arising from the referendum was what was printed on the ballot paper - to leave the EU.

That was implemented nine months later.

What comes out of all this mess though is many people are very happy for the Government to say one thing then do something else if it suits their narative.

What I am advocating is the fact Governments should be held accountable to follow through with voters decisions when the government asked to start with and the Government said they would apply the result whatever the result came out as.

If we are to happily have the Government give us a vote, they say they will accept the vote result then they say fuck it we might just do something different, then what is the point in us thinking we have a say to start with.

Lets face it, if this was all the other way round, you wouldn't be complaining or being so pedantic over facts.

If the Government had simply said we will take the result as just a none binding referendum to gauge public feelings then much of what you say would be true.

But what we got was a none binding referendum which the Government said they would act upon the result, so everyone was told it's just as good as a binding referendum. The Government tried to scare people into voting Remain & they lost.

Funnily enough my ballot paper said

Stay in the EU

Leave the EU

I voted Stay.

That along with all the Governments statements regarding a vote to leave was a vote to leave the Single Market, which I believe was in the Governments leaflet delivered to every home in the UK.

But that's also my point, we we're asked a question that not enough people knew enough about to understand exactly what a vote either way entailed, more so for leaving to be honest, as staying as you are is obviously a known entity compared to ripping away from 40+ years of integration.

IF it doesn't go to plan, you can bet you will get some leave voters get pissed off! Yes remainers will continue to moan about being worse off - but leavers are going to be more than happy with your chlorinated chicken and hormone beef along with US tech companies not paying their fair share! But you will have the most fabulous trade deal, done in the fastest time, with the best president in the history of America!

However those who promised all this will be craping themselves IF it goes wrong. But IF it goes well then everyone will be chuffed!

You’re not necessarily wrong. But it is standard practice for political parties to promise a fuck tonne of stuff during the elections, then fail to deliver because either they promised unobtainable policies or because they were just bullshitting.

What’s more important than if they do or don’t implement the policies is what these policies actually are. One of the popular defences of Trump is “at least he’s doing what he promised”, but look at what that is, tax breaks for the rich, destroying the planet through greenhouse gasses etc. Yes he is doing all the shit he said he would. It’s nothing to be celebrated. Same goes for Brexit, the government might have said they were going to leave the Single Market, but clearly it’s not in the countries interest to do so.

Oh I fully agree mate, all Political parties say they will do a tonne of stuff and very rare do half BUT...

...this was just ONE thing, ONE question, do you want to leave or stay, leave means leaving the Single Market, stay means we stay as we are , very binary, very clear "in a fashion lol" , I agree it was a fucking stupid question to ask the voters with so little information, but what's done is done.

Here is another question for those who own the result.

“Take back control” was the campaign soundbyte.

Especially of borders, migration and ending the free movement of people between the UK and EU27.

Is that being implemented, too?

I ask because the UK Government appears determined to maintain free movement across the border of the UK and the EU, with no controls.

What did the prospectus say?

"I wrote a letter to my MP (who I already knew was a Brexiteer), stating my objection to Brexit on the grounds that there isn’t a single benefit to Brexit and it will in fact make the country worse off both economically and socially.

The answer is give more money to law enforcement.

its all wearing thin now .the people who voted remain are still spitting their dummies out . the people who voted leave are being far more dignified about things . I'm glad we are out .we all should be .yes there is freedom of speech but there is also a time to grow up

its only just begun .If you think this all ends in march your insane. The country will be split for your entire lifetime.

Suck it up ..,

the only ppl who will Keep the U.K. split are remainers tho leavers will have what they voted for in March

Mega lolz!

Split inception.

the U.K. will be split after March because one side won’t be happy with being out of the eu ie remainers the other side ie leavers will have what they voted for OUT and if you think the U.K. will be backwards nowhere-vile country well that’s upto you to decide if you remain or stay then mate atleast you don’t need a referendum for that decision

You mean remain or leave?

I’d love to leave, but doesn’t look like I’ll be able to. We are about to lose our rights to live and work in Europe. well you’ve got 5 months to beat the rush mate just depends on how much you really want to go a bit like all them actors and pop stars in America that we’re moving to Canada if trump won it’s easy saying it but when push comes to shove ? Seems little point in leaving for 5 months then being forced to return.

I spent about 14 years living in other EU countries. It was great.

So yr saying U.K. citizens living in the eu are going to be forced to sell up and move back to the U.K. then do you really think that ? Well after 14 yrs living in Europe you’ve got some good contacts surely you can get a decent job and move back sounds like it would be a doddle for someone like you mate

Well if you have a crystal ball telling you what rules will be in place for UK citizens who want to live in the EU that would be great. I assume some will be able to apply for residency, but typically you need to have lived there continuously for 2, 5, or 10 years.

Standard lack of understanding of the issues from a leave voter. No wonder we ended up in this shit situation.

It's already happening! Some Brits are selling up and going back - especially the older ones - they fear for their health cover. Also, and I can only speak for France, there are a significant number who have been living here for years but not 100% legal - a bit like the "windrush" migrants in the UK. They have not followed or didn't bother to find out what they were supposed to do. In addition to that some didn't bother to integrate and therefore are poor at the language. The regulation which we will come under is "3rd country" and some may not have the income requirements nor the private health insurance requirements. The pound having tanked has hurt so many of them - especially the pensioners - it hurts when you go from 1.42 to 1.10 - on fixed incomes. The sad thing is they are the ones you don't want back as they are probably the ones who are going to strain the NHS!

Only on one border being the irish border and that's only because there are fixed conditions there relating to the good Friday agreement. All other UK ports and borders other than the land border in Ireland will have strict controls on them effectively ending free movement of people from the EU.

Or, to be slightly more explicit (as no doubt you will miss the point), how does having 'string controls' on the borders end freedom of movement. Are you saying that currently our UK Border Agency are not doing their job? How do you see Brexit affecting the ability for the border controls to control freedom of movement?

Hint: we are not a part of Schengen and we already have full control of our Borders.

Remind me what they voted for again, I'm not sure

Was it out out but in a bit , out but in but out with no vote , out but richer , out but poorer with sovereignty , out all out nothing but out ? As it really will not be difficult to illustrate out voters have a vast number of differing versions and at some point many will become very disappointed
