What is democracy?

I have 2 examples, the swedish election and brexit, whilst it is true that the party with the highest percentage should win like the social democrats did, but they didnt as it is bloc politics in sweden, so the current pm was voted off, if there was democracy he should in theory still be there as they have to respect the peoples votes.

Now for brexit, there should be a second referendum as we have seen it wont work, so people would have the last say, you wouldnt buy a house without a 2nd opinion, whats your view?

Democracy is a sham, especially here in the UK. The fact that the inhabitants of both houses of treason are trying to fudge BREXIT is only a small part of why this is true.

All we have had is political spin, with politicians telling us what we want to hear during elections, then simply not delivering after getting elected.

The good thing about a single referendum is that we voted for or against a single policy. In or out of the EU, it’s not rocket science and you don’t require a PhD to understand the question.

Now the self same politicians who told us to vote remain or risk tragedies, are still trying to stop us getting what we voted for, even though it has been more than 18 months since Independence Day.

We seem to hover between nanny state and dictatorship as the years go by. Is it any wonder that so called “political norms” are being rejected more often now than ever before. We all have so much more access to so much more information than we have ever had in the past. The people can see the liberal elite for exactly what they are now.

In ancient Greece, wasn't democracy embodied by a ballot? Somewhere in the back of my tiny brain, didn't they elect local officials by drawing lots on pieces of broken pottery, a small proportion of which were marked with a symbol meaning "elected".

Democracy is overrated.

That's not to say it isn't the best thing we've got, but people hold the system in far too high esteem...

Plus, it's about as divorced from the original meaning as it's possible to get without being an out-and-out misnomer...

A portmanteau of demos and kratos that means 'power of the people' - power of the people?

Not fucking likely...

Massive oversimplification.

Brexit affects just about everything and is not a single policy.

You dont need a PhD to understand the question but definitely the implications.

Same same for the illiberal elites. The whole will of the people argument is absolute tosh. Look at your cheerleaders like JRM.

And from what I can see we’re definitely leaving... from triggering articles, to no longer having MEPs, or being bound by Eu directives. So we must be out. Simples.

Does not compute. How can you fudge something if it is so simple and binary ?

Yes but only Greek males over 21 could vote - not the slaves or women.

I think it was Rosevelt who said Democracy is not perfect but it is the best system we had.

Of course there are many forms of democracy all over the world and you can argue the pros and cons of every system.

I quite like the swiss model where they have many referendums but that only works if the officials carry out the majority wishes of the people.

Parliament(both house)have acted irresponsibly in the way they have acted over Brexit and and all MP's should be barred from ever standing again and the Lords closed down for good.

We do,however need a government so what do we do?

The House of Lords is an ancient relic that belongs on the dustbins of time, only to be read about in history books.

As a United Kingdom, we should have four fully devolved governments, plus the big house for the purpose of any acts of Parliament that affect all four nations.

The building that they use for the House of Lords would be ideal for the use of a new English Parliament...

That was true here to but things have evolved as they do,not sure the voting age should have been lowered,a big mistake

You actually speak sense here, and I would love to see More local regional power to allow different parts of the country to manage their own affairs.

Housing for example, Cornwall as completely different challenges to say London or Manchester, yet all governed by a single housing policy.

Sadly we’re moving further from anything like this with the Tories closing in on absolute power.

This makes no sense at all. It’s like saying you don’t know for sure what will happen if you drive your car into a brick all. You have a pretty good idea.

Calling reality “doom and gloom” is just burying your head in the sand.

Personally I don’t see the point of a second referendum, only opens the possibility of making things even worse.
