Car sales jumped by 23.1 % last month. 94094 vehicles sold .

Sorry to disappoint all the merchants of doom and gloom on here . And for good measure the FTSE is close to an all time high. Great news for those saving for retirement or pensioners dependent on dividend income .

In addition after Brexit we will save a further 5.1 billion with the removal of red tape .

Project Fear looks laughable now .

Sales are down 4.2pc for the year despite this august boom. Suggestion is the boom is from sale prices due to off loading older models in advance of septembers new emission regs.

I’m not sure car dealers will be cheering quite yet.

And point of pedantry, high FTSE is not good if you’re saving. Buy low, sell high.

That’s not how Brexit works! Don’t analyse anything. Just grab any vaguely positive sounding news reported in the Daily Express, believe it 100% without question or thought and attribute it to regaining sovereignty.

LBC just talked about the gain. The fact it “lost” some of its gain later was almost an aside. And the fact it gained after a fall so all in it’s been flat was also ignored. There are lies, dammed lies, and headlines.

How many of the cars were made in Britain, and how much of the cash generated flows intothe pockets of shareholders overseas?

That would give a more meaningful insight of industrial growth than simple rejoicing at growing consumerism.

To be fair, it's not just newspapers that are at it. The BBC news let an MP prattle on all the money the UK will be putting into this and that instead of EU and it went completely unchallenged. A shocking piece of bias from the national broadcaster

If UK consumers were really concerned about the long term economic prospects of the UK economy they wouldn't be splashing out on high value ticket items like cars. It seems the only ones who are fretting about it are rabid remoaners.

Some 94,094 new vehicles were registered in the UK in August, says the SMMT

Rise was inflated by dealers shifting cars that fail to meet new emissions rules

All models sold with the 68 plate must adhere to new WLTP standards

Those that couldn't adhere to these limits were offered with huge discounts in August

Do you understand what drives share prices?

The FTSE 100 is dominated by global companies that earn their money in foreign currency so profits have "increased" due to the currency change and the strength of non-UK markets. QE and profits have also been used to buy back shares and artificially inflate share prices.

Happy to find out where you have information that indicates otherwise.

Do you think that Bull markets never end?

Some of the best decisions I have made in life were done on the spur of the moment.

It can hardly be considered to be trolling if someone is pointing out the number of new cars sold and people's confidence in the future of the UK.

And just to further reinforce people's confidence in the UK we have record low levels of unemployment and the FTSE at an all time high.

If you do this, you need to make sure you choose the right measure of achievement to judge success against. As already covered a single month of units sold isn’t great ... especially when year to date it’s down ... and the spike was due to having to sell old stock at reduced prices ...

I don’t know much about f1 but I’d need o know the nationalities of the engineers before making claims about the uks prowess. Two of the biggest football teams are based in Manchester. I’d be reluctant to say this means Mancunians are world class footballers.

I didn't claim this, it is the EU's own findings on Brexit that has claimed this. I just quoted what the EU found. The EU's own papers say if the UK scrapped just 7 EU regulations then UK businesses could save billions after Brexit.

Strictly speaking someone (I forget who) claimed it was in an internal Eu document. However they (as far as I know) gave no more details than this, and there has been (again as far as I know) no corroboration from anyone else who has seen this document.

Bob Woodward's book was on the record and all the conversations are recorded.

I'll go with that one.

The anonymous source, not so much. It is at least specific and context is given.

Your "information" doesn't tell us anything useful. If one of the EU regulations is the Basel III requirement for banks to increase capital then that would be billions on its own. Except that it's an international requirement that has been enacted through EU law.

It might be something else but you have absolutely no clue what do you?

My guess is that those who voted to leave are more open minded and forward looking that those who voted to remain.

A few little tweaks to duty rates will make no difference to anyone . In any event duties simply cancel out at a global level.

Anyone with common sense wants value for money. Those supporting the EU were unable to put forward any convincing argument that this is the case.

Pat, you really do amaze me. How can you claim that those who voted to leave are more open minded in one sentence, then in the sentence directly after it say 'duties simply cancel out on a global level' despite this having been explained to you numerous times that it doesn't? You are just demonstrating the exact opposite thing you are trying to claim!

I can't speak for all leavers (or all remainers) but I can see right in front of me a someone who takes a position and belligerently sticks to it regardless of how many times it is explained to them that they are plain wrong. It is not even as though this is a subjective point. Its not even that someone is trying to claim one state of affairs would be 'better' or 'worse' than the other. It is just simple mathematics.

And yet the Trump hating remoaners jump all over 'anonymous stories' coming out of the White House as if they were proven fact.

Why are people like you so ready and willing to accept an anonymous source from within the White House, and on a similar level you denounce an anonymous source coming from within the EU as nonsense????

Or is Trump bad, EU good all you want to hear? "

Strawman. I’m suspicious of all unsubstantiated claims and look to go to source to understand context and reduce the chance of only seeing part if a story. I will admit there are times I don’t always live up to this standard and will happily hold my hands up if called out.

Presumably by jumping on the eu story as fact, you follow suit with the trump story ?

" Hi. Personally I do not need to understand anything .

This pretty much sums up 99% of leavers. As we can see by the leave voters who post here there is a gross misunderstanding and lack of knowledge around the EU.

-Matt"

How could duties not can do at a global level ?

If the UK pays £2 duty to France and France receives the £2 the net value of the transaction at world level is nil.

Maybe your reasoning needs reviewing? . A fee tweaks to duties will make no difference to the UK.

"Car sales jumped by 23.1 % last month.

Pound Sterling also shot up in value today against the US dollar and the Euro.

From 1.11e to 1.11e.

LBC just talked about the gain. The fact it “lost” some of its gain later was almost an aside. And the fact it gained after a fall so all in it’s been flat was also ignored. There are lies, dammed lies, and headlines. "

I'm 38. My whole life the pound has gone up and down in value against the dollar/now euro. Why now is this a yard stick to measure the effects of brexit?

Because, as has been explained to you many many times, that it means that BOTH the consumer in the UK and the consumer in France end up paying a duty. Neither seller receives the duty (the governments do). The end result is the item or service being purchased is more expensive to the end buyer, and hence they are going to buy less of it, meaning the seller is going to sell less of it. Hence there will be less overall trade, and higher prices.

So in a very macroscopic sense it doesn't make a difference no, but at that level, nothing would make a difference as there would be no trade at all.

You can’t just say the opposite of the truth as if it’s fact. That’s Centaurs exclusive right.

Leavers are constantly proven wrong time after time. The situation is explained and they are shown to be in the wrong.

Non-leavers make points, show information, data, sources, examples, principals about how things work.

Leavers, (at least the ones on here), use stock catchphrases such as“remoaner”, “libtard”, “take back control” which are entirely meaningless. Oh and insults, plenty of insults.

One leave even admitted to not understanding anything, but ploughed on with the arguing regardless.

Deep and profound recession

800,000 job losses

6% drop in GDP

18% drop in house prices

30 Billion Emergency Tax-Raising Budget

All within 2 years following a vote to leave

Those facts?

Or just grabbing any vaguely negative sounding news reported in the Guardian, believe it 100% without question or thought and attribute it to Brexit.

Or analysis by remainers ('non-leavers' in your terms) such as 'car sales have slumped because of Brexit, absolutely nothing to do with government policy on diesel'

£150bn spent on maintaining stability after the referendum vote.

Growth falling from the highest to the lowest in the GDP meaning less money to the country and individuals.

Increased inflation raising costs to individuals and companies.

Weaker currency increasing the cost of imports and all dollar based commodities.

Increased price of holidays.

You can deny this all you wish but they are objectively true.

A spike in the purchase of UK assets by foreigners but no investment in capital equipment to improve future productivity due to uncertainty.

Some exporters have increased sales but not production due to the cost of imported inputs rising and skills shortages.

The exaggerated claims by the Remain campaign were based on the Bank of England and government doing nothing which was nonsense and they shouldn't have said any such thing.

The claims of Brexit causing this or that economic indicator to change are posted just as frequently if not more so by Brexit supporters. Specifically the last statistic on car sales.

What positive aspects of the EU or negatives of Brexit have you ever identified?

The FTSE 100 doesn't reflect the UK Economy though which on here is bounded about as a Brexit boom.

The FTSE 250 is a little closer to a glimps in to the UK's economy, but still not anywhere accurate.

Rise was inflated by dealers shifting cars that fail to meet new emissions rules

All models sold with the 68 plate must adhere to new WLTP standards

Do you understand what drives share prices?

The FTSE 100 is dominated by global companies that earn their money in foreign currency so profits have "increased" due to the currency change and the strength of non-UK markets. QE and profits have also been used to buy back shares and artificially inflate share prices.

Happy to find out where you have information that indicates otherwise.

So how do you know the consequences of any decisions that you make?

How do you know how to react to circumstances?

I never said that the best decisions are made in complete ignorance. It may be that some people have sufficient knowledge, experience and confidence to make snap decisions and do not spend too much time analysing data.

It is difficult to see how any amendements to duty rates will make any real difference. The average is around 1 % . Your assumption of prices increasing is based on the assumption that the government keep the duty and do not use it to reduce other taxes .

You would also need to offset other savings such as reduced costs if we do not have to adhere to EU regulations.

Duties which we pay to countries outside the EU will also reduce substantially.

In this case we would expect prices to fall ( not rise as you claim) .

Please name me one single EU regulation that we will save money from by not needing. And how much will we save? And what will be the implications of it not being their on others?

Bearing in mind if you are talking about any regulations relating to the standards of goods and services we sell to the EU of course they will have to stay or have an equivalence, as otherwise EU countries wont accept them anyway. Or we can’t just remove the EU standard safety compliance check for some product that we sell to the EU as they won’t accept it.

As for duty rates not making a difference, then why do so many leavers want them scrapped because they claim that by the U.K. having to enforce them on out-of-EU imports, it makes things more expensive?

The average WTO tariff is 9%

We have a national debt, budget deficit and we are still making budget cuts. What's your assumption on tax reductions?

What are the increased costs of setting up our own regulatory agencies?

What are the costs of multiple production lines if standards diverge?

What are the costs of longer transport times for goods produce?

What are the costs of EU companies transferring to other EU firms because it's so much easier?

The average EU external tariff is 1.5% so we don't pay that much already. Except in specific sectors which, again we cannot substitute as easily as the EU.

To get back to the car sales . . .

The Office of National Statistics on July 26 sounded a bit of a warning about increasing household debt levels.

Last year, on average every household spent £900 more than it took in, i.e. they borrowed £25bn.

It is the first time since 1988 households have been overspending for a whole year.

Even in the run-up to the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 – when 100% (and more) mortgages were offered to home buyers without a deposit – the country did not reach a point where the average household was a net borrower.

Savings are in decline, borrowing is on the rise.

Unsecured consumer credit borrowing – things like car loans and credit cards – has been growing rapidly since 2015, outstripping income growth and prompting warnings to private banks from the Bank of England about their underwriting standards.

The growth in car sales indicates that consumerism is increasing. But the growth is coming from greater personal indebtedness, not increased productivity.

And if that borrowing is flowing out of the country through the purchase of foreign-made cars, it may not be quite the cause for celebration the OP believes it is.

By consistently spending more than they earn, households are becoming increasingly vulnerable to economic shocks.

" Hi. Personally I do not need to understand anything .

This pretty much sums up 99% of leavers. As we can see by the leave voters who post here there is a gross misunderstanding and lack of knowledge around the EU.

-Matt How could duties not can do at a global level ?

If the UK pays £2 duty to France and France receives the £2 the net value of the transaction at world level is nil.

Maybe your reasoning needs reviewing? . A fee tweaks to duties will make no difference to the UK.

-Matt It is difficult to see how any amendements to duty rates will make any real difference.

Luckily this is only an internet forum so it is irrelevant whether anyone is right or wrong .

It really is so much easier not knowing anything.

I see why you enjoy it so much "

Reality check. I would not want to waste too much of my life answering those questions . If you know the answers why ask, if you don't just research the answers on Google.

Actually car sales figures are manipulated by the manufacturer's. They offer their dealerships huge bonuses if they hit their sales targets and it's not uncommon for dealerships to "buy" the cars and register them to hit said bonuses! Therefore affecting the number of registrations - theses are usually around the quarter months - March, June, Sept & December.

The EU sets relatively high import tariffs on agricultural products compared to everything else. The average EU tariff on agriculture was roughly 11% in 2016, compared to about 4% for other products.

Tariffs on dairy products are as high as 36% on average, those on clothing can average just under 12%, and those on footwear face about 4%.

The lowest earning 10% spend about 22% of their income on food and clothes. The highest earning 10% spend about 11% of their income on food and clothes.

There are no tariffs with the EU. Zero. They are also our closest neighbours so transport costs are low and times are short.

There are quota exemptions that are tariff free from all of the EU trade agreements.

Food and clothing is historically cheap in this country. That's why obesity and food waste is such a big problem.

We would also start paying duty and having customs checks imposed in our supply chain making our industry less competitive.

You make it all sound so good, it's free , it's wonderful. Bullshit! It isn't free trade when you're paying around £9 billion a year in Membership fees. We pay this £9 billion a year to the EU and in return we get a trade deficit, with other shitty strings attached like free movement and uncontrolled immigration, lost sovereignty, and our owm laws and courts being demoted beneath foreign laws and courts. What was it I said that you think is false then?

Do you think we don't pay around £9 billion a year to the EU in membership fees?

Check the full fact website and you'll find we do.

Do you think we have a trade surplus with the EU?

Look at any economic data from the government or ONS and it shows we have a trade deficit.

As a member of the EU we must accept free movement, that is common knowledge. It's also a fact that as a member of the EU, EU laws are above our own domestic laws and the ECJ is supreme over our own domestic courts. It's not trolling, it's just stating easily verifiable facts.

No. You aren't doing reading again.

Shall we go through this again Centaur?

Glad that you are using £9bn rather than the £13bn dor the red bus. That's a start at least

What will change with our trade deficit if we leave the EU? What's mechanism? Why do we have one now and what does it have to do with the EU? Germany has a trade surplus. Trying to link unrelated topics again.

Our non-EU "controlled" immigration is higher than EU immigration and we are introducing measures to bring in extra-EU fruit pickers. We could "control" half of our immigration now but apparently don't. Why not?

What "foreign" laws upset you so much?

Will we have sovereignty over WTO trade disagreements? Will the UK Supreme Court have primacy?

Nothing's free.

“Uncontrolled immigration” is simply untrue. Nowt else to say about that one.

We haven't actually left yet so yes you can still move to Germany under free movement of people rules until March 2019. And I'm pretty sure if you really wanted to you'd still be able to move there after Brexit if you go through the proper channels and have the correct paperwork in place. I mean it really does beggar belief how on earth anyone ever managed to emigrate from the UK before we joined the EU although it's pretty clear people did pre 1973. And British people still emigrate now to countries outside of the EU, with no free movement rules being applied to those non EU countries, How ever do they manage it?

"Any of Merkel’s “Syrian” refugees can come here once they get their groovy burgundy EU passports. That’s a lot of potential terrorists. Sorry but it is time to stop this kind of shit happening.

All the more reason then to stop blowing the fuck out of their homes in the first place.

Remind us again who it was who were calling for blood on here after the recent alleged chemical attack in Syria earlier this year supposedly committed by Assad's Syrian forces in conjunction with Russian forces against rebels? It was the so called liberals, Clinton supporting, remainers like Bobbangs and CLCC who said go in and bomb them. It was Trump supporting Brexiters like me who said No, we shouldn't be bombing. We should stop interferring in foreign countries affairs and wars but it's always the same old, same old usual suspects on here who want to go in with all guns blazing.

Did you take the blue pill?

Both US parties are pro war. US foreign policy does not change when the parties change. Bush, Clinton, Obama, Trump all pro war to approximately equal measures.

Your claim that leavers are anti-war and remainers are pro war is one of the most ridiculous things you’ve made up. And that’s saying something!

Hey, go back and read the threads, it's all on record in the fab forum archives. Although anyone with a half decent memory should remember who it was on here who wanted to go in and drop bombs on Syria.

Assuming that’s true. That’s one remainer who was pro war. One. "

Do you even bother to read posts properly? I gave you 2 names.

Oh, it goes back a lot further than that.

The Arab Spring, arming rebels to overthrow dictatorships the west did not like, and arming dictatorships they did like to crush rebels.

Cameron had such fun destabilising Libya he joined the party in Syria.

Six years of drought caused a huge influx from agricultural areas to urban ones, creating ethnic tensions and competition for work.

We sent in soldiers, money and weapons to turn them into jihadis to overthrow the dictatorship.

Jihadis!

Or “moderates” as they were referred to euphemistically.

And when some of those jihadis turned to hate the west as much as secular Assad, we sent the bombers over their towns and cities.

Syria, like Iraq before it, was no haven for terrorism, until we decided to drop “democracy” from 30,000 ft.

Putin, who had a far greater problem with fanatics from the asian provinces joining the caliphate, essentially decided to finish what the west had started and obliterate the vermin we had let loose.

Meanwhile, millions who did not want to fight for any side, fled in every direction, including Libya, where the recklessness of Cameron had created a lawless territory without any border control.

Now the UK is coming under pressure to repeat the folly in Iran.

Its madness.

Ahh you’re one of those! Haha.

Approx how many terror attacks have been committed in the UK by Syrians?

That’s right. Zero.

I would happily ship off all the racist morons to make some space for the refugees. UK would be a much better country.

Just shows how little you know! Probably you weren't even born in 1973? But getting into the current situation the rules NOW for all countries in the EU including the UK :

1. Have sufficient capital /income not to be a burden on the host state

2. Comprehensive medical cover not to be a burden on the host state

3. Not be a security risk

Meet those and the other various individual country requirements and your good to go.

Before 1973 it was only really the "well off" that could move to other countries. Bearing in mind we had exchange control rules in place also. One of the (new) FREEDOM'S is movement of capital!

Well given how much doom and gloom im reading on these forums by you brits in thinking it might be an idea to wait and see how things actually pan out rather than speculating. And should there be food shortages looting and rioting in the streets and visas required to get into EU countries you might be glad of an Irish passport

Well I’m sure criminal charges would never stick with the politicians that have lied continously through this. I somehow think May is going to walk away from it fine just like Cameron has.

But I’d settle for all those who voted leave to stop blaming remain, pulling their heads out of their arses and actually coming up with a plan on how to get this to work. I don’t hold much hope as they have been sold a utopia that doesn’t exist and don’t want to admit that they all want different things from Brexit.

We keep getting told we just need to ‘get behind May now’. But she hasn’t got the foggiest what she is doing and has flip flopped so much so far. Think back to the Lancaster house speach. How long ago was that now? Still nothing any clearer. Still throwing vacuous soundbites out to appease the leavers as she knows full well giving them any detail (if she had any) would alienate half of them.

The chances of flights being grounded are non existent so nothing to worry about . If there was a remote possibility of this happening shares in the budget airlines would be collapsing. Contingency plans are in place .

"To be fair, it's not just newspapers that are at it. The BBC news let an MP prattle on all the money the UK will be putting into this and that instead of EU and it went completely unchallenged. A shocking piece of bias from the national broadcaster "

I’ve lost all faith in the BBC which is sad as was always a supporter.

"Don’t forget the army in the streets and flights grounded it’s the end of the world for some on here lol god help us if they had been around in the 1930/1940s the towel would of been thrown in in the first round lol

Sorry, I must have missed the announcement where they have sorted out the arrangement for flights. Can you point me to it please?

-Matt The chances of flights being grounded are non existent so nothing to worry about . If there was a remote possibility of this happening shares in the budget airlines would be collapsing. Contingency plans are in place .

Well, yes airlines have had to spend millions on working around this and making sure things are Ok. But what contingency plans are you referring to? Can you please point me to where they have worked out arrangements for U.K. based carriers to fly EU routes, or how the U.K. airlines are going to do the safety checks on their fleet? Or what the impact is on UK flights to US airports and landing slots.

-Matt

Ah, so now the government have put to bed the remain scaremongering around the NHS running out of medicine and the Army out on the streets with the release of its no deal planning papers, you've switched to scaremongering around flights. The government No Deal papers on flights will be released soon so what scaremongering tactic will you switch to once flights have been put to bed? "

So, still no plans then?

"When you say accountable and deal with it what do you you mean ?

Why should the remain campaign be blamed for the leave campaigns inability to actually have a plan for what they wanted to do, or what the actually meant by ‘leave’.

No, I speak, albeit not fluently, but I can have conversations in, French, Spanish and Italian. We're in Spain at the moment, and this evening I was mistaken as Spanish when I was talking to a local, so I guess my Spanish is at least passable. One of our children teaches 3 languages and can speak 7, including woolof, swahili and Greek.

Sorry to disappoint all the merchants of doom and gloom on here . And for good measure the FTSE is close to an all time high. Great news for those saving for retirement or pensioners dependent on dividend income .

In addition after Brexit we will save a further 5.1 billion with the removal of red tape .

Just to add some context New car sales for just the month of August in

It would be interesting to see where these percentages came from. The increase is so high there must be factors distorting it. In any event car sales in Germany have fallen over the past six years from about 3.8 to 3.4 million.

Ahh you’re one of those! Haha.

Approx how many terror attacks have been committed in the UK by Syrians?

That’s right. Zero.

I would happily ship off all the racist morons to make some space for the refugees. UK would be a much better country.

Oh!

So how many of Merkel’s refugees were actually from Syria, or indeed wherever they said they were from?

As for us “racist morons.” Perhaps we warned the good people of this country what was coming, and they didn’t take any notice.

It’s pathetic little lefty liberal wastes of oxygen that fucked up this country. I’d keep the immigrants, and get rid of the red scum in a heartbeat..."

Just wow. What a revolting piece of prose that is. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Just as an aside...6 years isn't really that long a time.

Merkel opened the German borders in her speech in 2015.....so we're already halfway through the 'years' that you refer to.

So as it me that said that, and I’m talking in the first person, clearly those can’t be the lines you are referring to.

-Matt. You say all those that voted to leave, there was only one question asked, leave or stay.Stay lost,so you are blaming leavers instead of the Stay campaign who thought Stay-in would piss it.You should be blaming your side who put up a shit campaign to Stay. Are you really Alex Ferguson ?

Why should the remain campaign be blamed for the leave campaigns inability to actually have a plan for what they wanted to do, or what the actually meant by ‘leave’.

-MattThat,s not what i said and you know it,i said the Leave campaign should be blamed for the shit campaign they had when the vote was cast, pathetic falsehoods about leaving and the doom and gloom that this country is to suffer. If the leave campaign had done a proper job of their campaign in the first place but they didn’t because they thought they couldn’t lose,we may not be arguing.

We haven't actually left yet!

But I do understand your point and there were some exaggeration on both sides. In fairness neither side knew what would happen - nobody can see into the future! Having said that we have gone from the top economy in the G7 to the bottom - fact - not a positive.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask a simple question :

I cannot ever remember anyone in the leave campaign saying it was going to be "tough" for "x" number of years when we leave? I do remember them saying "of course they will do a deal - we buy more off them than of us"! But the rhetoric was all its going to be great! That's not being said now - is it?

The contemptuous savings post a possible Brexit is disinguously used, when it's not an overall figure based on lost opportunities, other significantly increased costs and longer term ill health of the population, due to not keeping in line with the benefits of EU membership. Unfortunate Brits living in Europe also stand to lose huge amounts, business home and travelling. Not to mention the lack of free EU mobile roaming costs, where people often had bills for £thousands.

"Car sales jumped by 23.1 % last month.

Just to add some context New car sales for just the month of August in

Germany 316,405 up 24.7% yoy

&

France 176,697 up 40.00% yoy

Yes so with 94094 vehicles sold in the uk ,the uk economy is a power house for sure .

It would be interesting to see where these percentages came from. The increase is so high there must be factors distorting it. In any event car sales in Germany have fallen over the past six years from about 3.8 to 3.4 million. "

All figures quoted are from Market lines an Industry website. August was a bumper month in the rest of the EU .Even Spain surpassed the Uk market for the first time ever with sales of 107,692 units up 48.7% yoy. Wow Spain surpassing the Uk maybe Project Fear had a point.

Nothing to do with Project Fear. As already said earlier the spike was due to WLTP emissions tests.

Automakers rushed to move uncertified vehicles ahead of a 1st September deadline.

A bumper month? Hardly! The reality is that many cars were sold with minimal or no profits.

Costa Blanca Spain...

"Trouble brewing though as the majority of new cars are on PCP or credit.

Sorry to piss on everyone’s chips."

Yes there is big trouble brewing with personal leasing.

I read not so long ago that 4 out of 5 new cars sold in the retail market were on personal leasing plans.

That's all fine and dandy for manufacturers and dealerships now, but the other side of the coin is when the cars bounce back into the used car market.

Some of the figures I've seen advertised don't even cover the depreciation over the term, let alone any profit. Add to that the glut of used cars hitting the market at around the same time will depress values even further.

It isn't only in the UK. For our business in Germany we run seven cars and Mrs H (against my advice) has always avoided leasing. However earlier this year three of the cars were due for changing and we couldn't believe what we were being offered on 3 year lease.

We ended up taking 3 Corsa's for 119€ per month each with no up front and no end payments. We just use them for 3 years and hand them back, it even covers the servicing

To be fair residual values in Germany tend to be higher than in the UK. But this is madness. 4284€ represents around a third of the just over 13,000€ list price which will leave the dealer having to get nearly 9000€ for a 3 year old car (albeit with low kms) just to cover the depreciation. Servicing costs, money costs, and a bit of profit would have to be found as well.

I watched a a very old established Ford dealer, that I had previously worked for, go bust in the late 80's when their new (Jack the Lad) fleet manager stitched them up with buy backs from daily rentals and unless the manufacturers are heavily subsidising these deals, I can see the same happening again.

I do not think that a comparison with Spain can have any validity. If it had a 48.7 % increase YOY there must be various factors distorting the figures.

Anyone with common sense would query the validity of a statistic showing a 48 % yoy increase in car sales. One possibility is that it was from an exceptionally low base . Out of curiosity I googled car sales in Spain and the figure which I returned was about a quarter of what you claim it to be.

In any event the reported figures are great news for the British motor industry and all the companies associated with them ranging from advertising agencies, car transport hauliers , leasing companies and shareholders in car dealerships .

I do not think that a comparison with Spain can have any validity. If it had a 48.7 % increase YOY there must be various factors distorting the figures.

A graduate from the Trump school so .All smug and happy with the uk stats for August. Once stats are shown for the other markets that then paint a less rosy picture in the uk ,the figures are questioned "various factors distorting " you will be resorting to a cry of fake news next .

I am sorry but I when I put "car sales august spain 2018" into google The first five seach results all quote "107692 units in August 2018". But sure keep fooling yourself if you wish, What I am querying is the % increase , not the volume of units sold . An increase of 40 % is seema far too high. "

40% of not very much is still not very much. Same applies here, as our car production is small in comparison to Japan and the US.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Just a question on the Spanish registrations.

Was the figure quoted for new car sales or new registrations?

There will be quite a difference between the two.

Spain imports a lot of used cars (especially from Germany) and when put on to Spanish plates just get the next number in the system, not specific to the cars age. You can take a 10 year old car to Spain and when you register it you could get the next number to your neighbours brand new one.

New registrations will include these cars, new car sales won't.

It's the same system in most countries when a car is imported. However a good point - sure if you searched hard enough you would find the info.

Whether it is necessary to investigate figures and data would depend on the reliability of the source .

One set of figures came from a highly reputable source , the other information appeared to lack any creditability. A 40 % increase is not something that I would accept without investigating further .

You fail to recognise that just because it is not necessary to understand something does not necessary mean that the concept in question is not understood.

Figures seem to ANFAC which it seems to be their industry body.

If the reason for sales is due to date be same reason as the uk I would expect a bigger % increase in a county which is not as economically strong.... people tend to seek bargains. The boost seems to be through corporate sales. Again, that makes sense to me. Although sales to business is lower than the likewise U.K. increase of 166%. Maybe I should doubt those numbers and so the uk number ....

You fail to recognise that just because it is not necessary to understand something does not necessary mean that the concept in question is not understood.

If I pay a bill to Eon I do not need to understand how their accounting system works .

I know you live in a fantasy world in which your mysterious unnamed sources are always more reliable and credible in your mind than any public sources that anyone else can look at, but that is actually the least of your problems in this topic.

Your analogy to eon and accounting shows how far you seem to be missing the point.

But believe what you what, I think the rest of the forum take most of your claims with a very large pinch of salt.

As far as I am aware most people have access to information contained in newspapers . Unlike the internet anything published in a newspaper is subject to control by the press council and other regulatory bodies .

These forums are an opportunity for people to express an opinion. It is irrelevant whether their opinion is right or wrong . As far as I am aware in the UK you are still entitled to express an opinion and interpret data as you see fit.

Anyone with expert knowledge on a topic is hardly going to be spending their idle or leisure time posting detailed data on here.

In real life you would not walk up to someone and state that they live in s fantasy world . It is very easy to be a keyboard warrior on the internet .

"Car sales jumped by 23.1 % last month.

I am sorry but I when I put "car sales august spain 2018" into google The first five seach results all quote "107692 units in August 2018". But sure keep fooling yourself if you wish, What I am querying is the % increase , not the volume of units sold . An increase of 40 % is seema far too high.

But an increase of 23% is just hunky dory and doesn’t require any further inquiry because you don’t need to understand how any of his works.

Right.

Quelle suprise.

-Matt It is hardly going to make any difference to anyones life whether or not someone believes what they post on an internet forum.

What matters is the feedback that you get in real life both in employment and from other sources .

My preference is to participate in the success of the UK. Hence my reasons for supporting the current government and Brexit .

The sources that I use are available to everyone. The difference is that you do not like their content as your appear to have difficulty accepting democracy and that more of the electorate voted to leave the EU than to remain.

I am glad I backed the winning team. "

What has your misunderstanding of what democracy is got to do with your misinterpretation of statistics?

You’re possibly slightly optimistic how the press works. Exaggerate in headlines. Apologies on page 27.

Opinions are to be debated and challenged. Simply saying my opinion is as “right” as yours is symptomatic of where we are now. It’s flat earth / holistic medicine country. To steal phrases, it’s debating equivalent of being a snowflake.

And while there may not be experts here, the idea is to have just enough critics thinking to see a statement, understand its context, be able to dig around it, and determine a view you can support.

Or you defer to experts. Not newspapers.

I'm surprised that no-one has spotted the the glaring flaw in the comparison of the British, German, French, and Spanish markets.

I must admit to being slightly embarrassed that (with my, albeit a long time ago, motor trade background) that I've only just twigged it myself.

The comparison in August doesn't stack up for that very reason. It's AUGUST.

When I was in the job it was July when the retail sector went to sleep for a month with everyone waiting for the new plate on August 1st.

However since the new system was introduced in 2001 the new plate got pushed back to 1st September leaving August as the sleepy month for registrations.

Of all the countries mentioned Britain is the only one that has a twice yearly, age related, plate change.

So sorry to piss on the remoaners parade but the argument on numbers just doesn't wash.

Let's do the same comparison for September and see where it goes.

Aren’t we comparing aug 17 versus aug 18 figures? So any local year on year trends should (all things being equal) flow through.

I’m guessing at a slightly depressed September market versus last year where corporates have already filled their boots

On the percentages that is fair comment.

However when comparing raw numbers between Britain and the others then it produces a massive distortion.

And now Jaguar Land Rover announced they are moving their Brum plant to a 3 day week in two week's time due to a combination of uncertainty over Brexit and a fall in diesel car sales.

But, hey, what do they know? How's the FTSE doing Pat?

It can't be all doom and gloom as they are still on the same pay but you wouldn't want anyone to know that would you!

It seems to me that there are many here who delight in all things bad news for Britain. Nasty...
