With the ongoing roll out of the universal tax credits and austerity more and more people are in hardship are turning to the church. I would like to thank the church for being the main charities for food banks, school holiday lunch clubs, help the homeless, helping families in poverty etc. Churches are becoming more important within communities than they have been for many years. So is it the job of the churches and charities to pick up the pieces of our failing government I have a feeling things are going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better x.

Austerity was needed to pay down the country's debts, people were told.

Well, the people got austerity all right - the drawbridge pulled up left, right and centre.

Don't worry, the big society will look after you while we pay off the debts.

Pay off the debts?

They've doubled, trebled and quadrupled the national debt

All the time while cutting spending on the least well off in society.

Where's the money gone?

On their chums in the city, would be my best guess.

Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor.

Inequality has never been greater.

Is it any wonder those same people on the receiving end of austerity gave the ruling posh-boys an almighty poke in the eye with a sharp stick during the EU referendum?

I think the point being made is that people voted Brexit mostly because they felt like they were getting fucked over by a wealthy out of touch elite. Which is right. We've just gotta be careful we don't replace one out of touch wealthy elite with another.

A recent study by Thiemo Fetzer, an Associate Professor in the Economics department at the University of Warwick, found that:

a) areas of deprivation suffered disproportionately from the effects of austerity through reduction in public spending

b) those same areas showed the highest gains in support for UKIP

The effect of austerity varies greatly across the country - it cost £914 a head in Blackpool compared to £177 a head in the city of London.

The conclusion was that UKIP's message resonated most with people with economic grievances.

Austerity is always an unequal and disproportionate economic tool. To my knowledge there has only been one use of it where it has not been targeted at the poorest in society (Ted Heath's 'Threshold Agreement'). The poorest in society are for the most part the poorly educated and semi literate, and as such are the easiest to manipulate and use popularism to appeal to. Popularism is the favoured method of gaining power of autocrats and controlling information and education are their favoured tools.

It is no accident that austerity formed an underclass that was primed to vote for brexit.

It is my hope that just like the Czar the Tories and far right have overplayed their hand and will end up suffering the same fate.
