Value for money?

So it appears that MP's are asking for an increase in their expenses to cover the extra work load as a result of brexit. There current expenses are £151,000 and £161,000 in London on top of their basic salary of £77,000 therefore each MP costs the taxpayer a minimum of £228,000 - more of they are minister's! That equates to £148200000 - thats just the basic. So are we getting value for money? |

For their level of responsibility, I think yes.
Look at the video below, it shows a man speaking at a public meeting of a school, and explaining that the superintendent of the school kicked him, beat him and shoved his head into a urinal when they were at school together. The man (or child as he was at the time) went home and put his father's .45 in his mouth wanting to kill himself. The superintendent went on to resign, well kind of. He will leave on 1st Jan 2019, and is getting a $750,000 severance package.
I think it goes to show how little our politicians are paid. Local politicians aren't even paid enough to give up full time employment to be able to dedicate themselves to serving their communities. It's ridiculous. |

To measure "value for money", you need some sort of criteria.
There is none when it comes to an MP.
They seem to be a law unto themselves - quite literally.
Some of them use those allowances to hire members of their family; some use it to hire constituency; some use it for political purposes, e.g. the costs of running the hard-right ERG.
That said, how many people have to re-apply for their job every few years, with an interview panel of 50,000-100,000?
Mind you, if they do lose their jobs they seem to have a tidy sum in compensation to fall back on.

Why is it ridiculous? Local politics is not a full time job. All they do is pass any issues you have raised with them onto the relevant department or council officer at the council who are full time.
Councillors get a basic allowance plus extra for any committees they are on.
My local council's basic allowance is £11,500 per year. |

It's not paid at a full time rate, so no one can afford to do it full time.
"All they do is pass any issues you have raised with them onto the relevant department or council officer at the council who are full time." With that you could say that MPs just pass things onto civil servants, so why aren't they part time? But then again many work additional jobs, something that I would like to see stopped. |

I'm fine with them having this rise.
However I want a change in the law making it a crime carrying a mandatory life term in prison for any MP or relation of an MP who takes any sort of payment (including freebies) from any sort of lobby group. MPs should represent their constituents and no one else. |

What wage should local councillors be paid?
My ward councillor represents 3,750 people and gets £11,500. That is approx. £3.00 per person for a part time job.
My MP represents 65,500 people and gets £77,000. That is approx. £1.20 per person for a full time job. |

Interesting everyone has a different take. I have never in my life asked an MP for help so I think they are "expensive ". When I watch parliament tv and see the empty seats I wonder what they do? 10 years ago the expenses scandal - how many were charged and convicted. Public service should be the highest possible standards, unfortunately I think it's near the bottom of the scale. |

We won't be paying towards the travelling circus that is the European Parliament moving from Brussels to Strasbourg once a month for 4 days either. A Completely pointless EU exercise that wastes a whopping £150 million per year. May as well chuck the money down the drain. At least Westminster stays in one place. |

"At least £25-30k.
Why? It's not going to get more potholes filled, verges cut or affordable houses passed in planning."
I would argue that you would get better people, who would do a better job at managing local authority resources. |

Yea bloody hilarious.
Have a read of this and after having a right good giggle at my expense you may want to have a butchers at the registrar of members interests and find out who your mp really works for:

My council has a Chief Executive on £157,000 a year salary (+ £30,000 pension contribution) and 3 x senior Directors on £126,000 a year salary (+ £24,000 pension contribution) to do that.
I don't hold much hope for my council. Between the elected councillors and senior council officers they managed to approve the building of a brand new council HQ with parking for only 30% of staff and no council chamber.
The former means staff have to park in an industrial estate opposite (senior council officers have reserved parking!).
The latter means they have to hold full council meetings in the old council HQ 6 miles away which needs to be heated, secure and having data/telecom links running. |

Goes to show the quality of elected politicians that you only pay £11,000 for |

Broadly I think it's better than it has been. I would like the purchase of second homes in the capital, paid for by the taxpayer, to end and be replaced by a more cost effective system that gives better value for tax money. Presently the taxpayer pays all, the MP gains from the capital invested in the property, when it should probably be the reverse of this.
W better solution would probably be accommodation like a comfortable hotel block for their use whilst attending parliament. Premier Inn style would work. They could pay to use it when not in attendance. Obviously a security risk but probably far cheaper than the current situation. It could be in zone 2 or somewhere convenient to parliament but cheaper than Westminster etc.
They should have been working through their extensive summer break but without additional pay. Employees do this when their workload and urgency forces this |

You have gone off the subject - but for the record I agree with you. But your Leader has done very well for himself out of an organization that he hates. His pension is going to be a lot more than yours - and guess what your going to pay for it until he dies! |

Farage has done a great job of undermining and disrupting the EU from within, as have other ukip MEP's as far as I'm concerned. He's also been hugely influential in getting the UK out of the EU. He and his colleagues in ukip have done exactly what i wanted them to do when i voted for them. On that basis worth every penny i pay in tax towards his wages and his future pension. I'd even stretch it further by buying him a pint if I'm ever lucky enough to see him in a pub. He's done a fantastic job. |
