Tories lose support, Ukip bounce back
Jump to: Newest in thread
An Opinium opinion poll in tomorrow's newspapers just shown on sky news press preview has revealed the Tories have been hemorrhaging support ever since the Chequers plan was revealed last Weekend. Leave voters are now deserting the Conservative party and flocking to support Ukip. The tories had a clear poll lead last month on 42% but have now dropped to 36% since the chequers deal was announced last weekend. Labour are now in the lead on 40%.
Support for Ukip has shot up in the last week since the chequers betrayal from 3% to 8%.
How long will tories tolerate this from Theresa May? |

"Great to see the Right vote split to allow room for Labour
Wasn't the right vote split between the tories and Ukip in the 2015 general election? Cameron won with a majority didn't he, lol. "
UKIP didn't win a single seat, they can't have had many people stupid enough to vote for those losers again. |

Wrong. Ukip won Clacton in the 2015 general election with Douglas Carswell.
Ukip had also previously held the seat of Rochester with Mark Reckless. So Ukip have had 2 MP's in Parliament.
Ukip also won the last MEP elections in the UK, returning more MEP's than any other party. |

I saw UKIP joining in the thuggish "Free Tommy Robinson" demo yesterday.
UKIP, Tommy Robinson, Donald Trump - peas from the same pod.
Please keep it up. You begin to make Jeremy Corbyn seem like the moderate choice.

Reckless (a brilliant name for an MP) - defected to Ukip he lost when he contested the seat!
I would suggest you look at the referendum voting paper again. The question was leave or remain - no other options or variants! We are leaving the EU - the will of the people - and therefore May has delivered on the vote - FACT! |

It's funny that no one ever picked fun out of Mark Reckless name when he was a Tory MP?
Anyway Mark Reckless did win the Rochester seat in a by-election. Yes he defected from the tories to ukip but when he defected he stood down as a tory MP. A by-election was called and Mark Reckless won the seat by majority vote as a Ukip candidate. He was elected by the people of Rochester for ukip. |

We'll see if they're finished if Theresa May continues down this soft Brexit path. Ukip are already seeing a bounce in the polls since Chequers. Nigel Farage has always said if Theresa May and the Tory party betray Brexit (Labour have also already betrayed it by saying they would stay in the customs union) then there would be a backlash from voters in this country the like of which has never been seen before. So we shall see. |

Trust them or don't trust them that's upto the individual to decide. "
well you big up the ones you like and bash the ones you don't... so you are not really the man to promote consistancy....
maybe you can answer a political equation for me... "if it takes nigel farage 7 attempts to never get elected as a ukip mp.... how many mp's do you think ukip would get with their "8% share".......

"Centy, in your wildest wetdream ukip fantasy, how many seats do you see ukip winning from their current base of zero? 1? 5? 20? 100? "
It's not so much about seats, as the tail wagging the dog here.
The more the Conservative Party share of the vote haemorrhages to UKIP, the further it drifts from reaching the magical 317 seats in Parliament.
Nothing terrifies a Tory more than the thought of losing power.

Exactly, and this jump in support for ukip has only just happened in one week since Chequers. They were just talking about it on the BBC Sunday politics programme and said the tories will lose more support from leave voters over Theresa May's soft Brexit plan as time goes by. The EU will seek to water down her thin gruel Brexit even more in negotiations. This week people have been distracted by the world cup and President Trumps visit, now those distractions are out of the way and more focus is put on this, the tories will lose more support and ukip will gain ground on the the back of it. |

Well if you say 52% of the voters voted for Brexit you wanted, then we should see how many leave the conservatives. What's your hypothesis? |

The Opinium poll in The Observer is not the only poll to deal a blow to Theresa May in today's Sunday paper's. An opinion poll done by The Sun on Sunday shows 53% of voters say Theresa May's Chequers Brexit plan betrays the Leave vote in the referendum or is a bad fudge. 53% in The Sun on Sunday poll is remarkably close to the 52% who voted to Leave the EU in the referendum in 2016.
The Sun on Sunday's polling also shows 62% of Brits want Theresa May to quit before the next general election because of her soft Brexit plan.
And over a third want her out now right away. |

I have been hoping for an age for the return of Nige as UKIP leader. This time for the long haul, as forcing a govt to change is not enough. The Tories lord then made us wait years before selling is down the river. We need a UKIP that will speak to the British people and grab enough seats to have a say, if not to take power away from the LibLabCon. |

A genuine question.... does a party have to 'let you in'? Or can anyone decide to run for whatever party they want?
Considering the complete clusterfuck that Farage has caused, and the damage to the Tory party that he has caused, I really don't think they would want to let him in.

Yes, the party would have to let Farage in before he could run as a Tory.
If they would and if he'd want to are two very different questions. |

Nah, not really. Add up the Tory share of the vote and the UKIP share of the vote, subtract a share of the UKIP vote for those who'd never vote Conservative, and it still doesn't add up to a lot more.
Is there room for another mini-Trump in the Tory Party? Letting Farage join would make their civil war worse, not better. There is a sizeable element who detest him for forcing the Tory Party down a road they did not want to take. |

I suppose the conservatives need all the votes they can muster.Adding farage might be a bitter pill to swallow but will one more racist in the Conservatives ranks be of any concern to conservative voters ,? I think not.
Let him join and let the conservatives drink from poisonous flem filled chalice of hatred and xenophobia that farage offers up. |

Nigel Farage joining the conservatives could be a good thing for two reasons .
1. We would get a Brexit we voted for .
2. Farage and Trump are good friends , so we would be back in their good books and could strike up better trade deals .
And a third reason ?
The Tories would stay in power and keep Corbyn out , because that would be a disaster ! |

The number of times leave voters have said they knew exactly what they were voting for and it was totally clear.
The reality is May is delivering exactly what it said on that voting slip. To leave the EU. Remember she told us all the Brexit meant Brexit. Any attempt to try and get any actual detail of what that meant was always met with "You lost, get over it".
Maybe for some, the penny is dropping now is it?

A genuine question.... does a party have to 'let you in'? Or can anyone decide to run for whatever party they want?
Considering the complete clusterfuck that Farage has caused, and the damage to the Tory party that he has caused, I really don't think they would want to let him in.

As far as I know the political party has to nominate you as their standing candidate for your constituency, unless you decide to stand as an independent. |

To be fair, the type of Brexit wasn’t specified before the vote.
Should the uk remain a member of the European Union or Leave The European Union.
The people who campaigned for the leave side had no influence on the type of Brexit that would unfold.
Presumably there was a spectrum of assumptions and expectations across the leave voters as to how it would go down. |

"Great to see the Right vote split to allow room for Labour
Wasn't the right vote split between the tories and Ukip in the 2015 general election? Cameron won with a majority didn't he, lol.
UKIP didn't win a single seat, they can't have had many people stupid enough to vote for those losers again. They changed the course of history even you must be able to see that, and Farage will return if needed."
Return to not winning a seat like all the previous times he's stood?

Well if it is a soft brexit or even better a no brexit, there is bugger all the leavers could do about it. I'm not even sure there is time for a leadership contest now let alone a full blown election. |

And her version as published last week is not a version which anyone really expected .
It’s almost as if we leave but continue to pay into it so we can still abide by all the rules they set on trade , law and everything we didn’t want from them any more .
A pointless and futile exercise .
Leaving is leaving ffs .... hers is like a couple agreeing to split up but still living together , staying together , splitting the costs but not sleeping together . |

The Brexit in name only Chequers plan drawn up by Theresa May now looks to be dead anyway. The 4 ammendments to it by the ERG lead by Jacob Rees Mogg killed it off today. The 4 ERG ammendments won by majority vote in Parliament, much to the annoyance of swivel eyed loony remoaners like Anna Soubry.
With these ammendments the EU won't accept the plan and even if they did the ERG would vote it down combined with Labour anyway. Theresa May thought the cabinet, The Tory party and the grassroots tories would swallow this plan, much like her reckless gamble on the general election last year, she thought wrong! She is in such fear of losing her job as Prime minister now she is looking to take an early summer recess from Parliament. |

I mean I agree that this is a terrible solution, basically we are in a similar position, yet without a seat at the decision making table. On the up side we may be able to retain some workers right and environmental protection.
Crashing out completely would be even more economically ruinous.
At this point I don’t think anyone has an idea of what the least worst option actually is. |

Same could be said of leaving, to go ahead with any version of Brexit is moronic in an economic, cultural, environmental and philosophical way. By leaving we’re admitting that the population will vote against their own interest based on lies told us by the ruling elite.

Anyone can join any party, unless of course they are high profile, and in that case they will be flagged up. So Nige would almost certainly not be allowed to rejoin the Tories, not that it is likely he would want to... |

It was a plebiscite- which remain lost (narrowly), to fail to deliver on it makes it seem pointless that we had one in the first place, and would certainly fuel further disillusionment with the democratic process in this country.
I'm under no illusions that some part of the "Leave" campaign was unachievable rhetoric, but the same could easily be said of the "remain" campaign.
In reality, I (and probably most rational brexiteers) expect some sort of compromise. The EU and Britain both have plenty to lose by failing to come to an agreement. |
