He said the UK would be back of the queue for a trade deal, now Trump says that he will deal with the EU, and the UK won't get a trade deal.

As a trade deal with the US has often been lauded on here as vital to the post Brexit British economy, will brexiters finally wake up and smell the coffee?

Obama was wrong and Trump said we'd be at the front of the queue if we had a proper Brexit. It's Theresa May's version of soft Brexit which is basically a Brexit that has sold 17.4 million leave voters down the river which Donald Trump doesn't like.

I'm sure you've heard Donald Trump's recorded comments on the news channels tonight being interviewed by the Sun newspaper. Donald Trump has completely trashed Theresa May's Brexit plan and has backed Boris Johnson and David Davis for resigning from the cabinet. If we have a hard Brexit then we're at the front of the queue with Donald Trump. Theresa May needs to go.

Maybe you should have woken up when all she could blather was "Brexit means Brexit!". I seem to recall, Centy, you in particular were lauding how good she was and despite her 'weak and wobbly' approach, that all would be well. Despite the glaringly obvious lack of a plan, you kept saying she was doing alright and you supported her.

She's the PM, you wanted her to call the shots, you didn't want judges, you didn't want a people's vote, you didn't want a meaningful vote in parliament. She led the hard liners (you included) up the garden path to pass legislation leaving it up to her. You made your bed, now you've got to lie in it.

Well documented where? If Obama said it just for DC, then why is Trump now saying it when TM is desperate for him to just keep his mouth shut?

Remember when Obama's comments were derided as a foreigner sticking their oar in where it wasn't wanted.

Funny how that opinion on oar wielding foreigners has changed...

It's all well and good to have a little chuckle at those who truly believed (and needed to the believe) that the emperor had clothes ...

BUT

As a society when will we get our act together and realise (and do something about) the tragedy of media manipulation and modern "democracy"?

We are all being played.

Trump wants to destroy the EU for reasons of domestic business. In that sense, he and Farage are on the same side - they both detest the EU and the power it holds.

Trump doesn't care about the UK, or any other country for that matter. They are all tools for "America First".

His objective is to crush the EU. Cajoling the UK to turn its back completely on the EU helps achieve that. So does threatening to walk out on NATO.

Like the most rabid Brexiteer, he wants to smash things up and rebuild in his own image.

Now he comes into the UK and tries to stir everything up - no deal between me and Theresa, Boris would make a great PM etc etc.

Music to the ears of a rabid Brexiteer, perhaps. But I suspect counter-productive to the many - being bullied by Trump is more likely to engender sympathy and support for Mrs May.

I have to agree. These aren't the words of a credible politician, and I doubt that Trump could insult Mrs May and the democracy of the UK any further if he tried.

If I was the Queen, I would suddenly become "too busy" to meet Trump today, but as we all know, she and we are bigger than that!

Really, how do you suss that out?

Do you think the US is going to let us market US meat products as "USA PRODUCED MEAT: CHLORINE WASHED"?

I don't think they will, they'll realise that if our marketing is that obvious this venture wont work for them.

In addition you forget; if you flood your domestic market for animal products lets say, with cheap imports, then the price for your domestic meat goes up (if you import too much a too cheap a price).

This creates a two tier system:

A.) Cheap, undesirable meat for the poor leading to exacerbated heath issues.

B.) Some domestic producers going bust as they lose ground to the cheap market.

Building on this thread:

Trump's comment summated as "No hard brexit, no American Free Trade - you have to choose between the US or the EU" shows how weak we are to be negotiating brexit right now. It also shows how foolish the 'swash-buckling Britain' narrative is - why? Geopolitics always beats pragmatism sadly.

Trump has seen that we as a country are pulling ourselves in about three directions and we have no leadership capable of controlling the country. He's going to try and capitalise on our weakness and checkmate us in a position of weakness where he can allow American corporates to do here what we were previously able to stop them from doing.

The whole irony of this, beyond that Trump is now actually stopping global Britain from being a thing, is that some people will still spin this as good brexit news, despite the fact that he has effectively said what Obama had said (which I was not a fan of) just flipped in a different direction.

Does your Butcher have the documents and labelling to show you where he got the produce from?

I ask this as when I was 17, 18 and 19 during the summers between studying I worked for two local butchers. One was in my town centre, the other was up the road in a village attached to a farm.

I asked the guy I worked for in the centre why he didn't advertise food as local produce and he explained he couldn't legally as most meat was imported from Ireland on the cheap.

The butcher attached to the farm got his produce from the adjacent and local farms and had the documents to show it.

Long winded; but I've put all this down to show you that a local butcher does not necessarily buy local and that you should always ask where produce comes from if you wish to go down your 'buy local' ethos (which I agree with.)

Furthermore, a more obvious point to make is that:

A.) not everyone has a local butcher.

B.) Not everyone can afford to buy from them as they do tend to be more expensive.

Actually they are! See that is the bit that I am not sure you are aware of. US fda standards are lower than the Eu food safety standards ... which is why most us meat and dairy cannot be sold in the Eu

that’s what trading standards are there for to check the company’s label and sandwich company’s have to send there sandwiches of to the lab to be checked for shelf life so anything that comes up will be shown it’s not a big problem to be solved really

What if there is no label? What we are talking about has nothing to do with shelf life.

No, trading standards ensure that customer complaints and queries are dealt with and investigated, and checking that businesses comply with legislation.

If we allow the import and sale of substandard American food products that is legislation.

What might become legislation is whether any food or secondary food products (eg a chicken sandwich) have to have American produced Chicken contained, declared on the packaging. Which might be an issue as the American's tend to like an 'indiscriminate market'.

I believe you are conflating Trading Standards with Food Standards Agency.

Actually the main ones are that animals intended for the human food chain in the EU cannot be injected or taken any steroids or antibiotics... which they can do in the US. Which is where for example the US idea of chicken being washed in chlorine comes from to get around the fact they are giving antibiotics

Or US regulations require eggs to be chilled, and remain chilled throughout their supply chain, whereas eggs in the EU must not be chilled.

So what would we do with eggs in the UK? Chill them or not?

Would I be right in thinking if we accept lower standards in imports, we’d allow uk farmers to lower their standards ? So a Union jacknsranp wouldn’t mean owt?

Tbh trump may be playing a blinder here. Depending on our agreement with the EU, I suspect a Us agreement just won’t work as we couldn’t allow in anything which could go into the EU and be below their standards.

Whatever else, it’s clear that we need the US more than it needs is, and that the US economy is clearly bigger than ours.

So either way, it’s not as though we’re going to be getting some brilliant deal that will be more in our favour than theirs. We’ll just end up agreeing to lots of stuff with much lower standards than we already have.

"

I

Which is our biggest trade market....?"

The EU, I believe.

But the real issue for me is standards and quality.

Mrs May is taking us in a direction that would ensure all our foodstuffs and products are of the same standard as the EU.

Trump hates that because a lot of his producers cannot meet them unless they spend more money on quality.

The UK opens up as new market for US exports only if it dumps the higher standards set by the EU.

Hence the outburst. He wants to drive a wedge between the UK and EU, and he needs to undermine Mrs May because she is leaning towards the EU market, and therefore depriving US producers of potential growth in the UK.

That is all he cares about, increasing profitability for US producers.

The best thing May can do now is deliver an ultimatum to the US

The Sun recorded the interview.

Blubbermouth now complains it is fake news.

The Sun says it is Trump who is fake.

For the life of me, I do not understand why the British nationalists think he is a better bet than the EU.

"He said the UK would be back of the queue for a trade deal, now Trump says that he will deal with the EU, and the UK won't get a trade deal.

I gave her the benefit of doubt and thought she was doing well up until the Chequers meeting last Friday where she sold Brexit out. Valuable lesson learned, this is what you get for trusting a remain Prime minister.

It's clear now she can't get the job done and she can't be trusted to deliver a proper Brexit. She needs to be removed and the country needs a Prime minister who campaigned for Leave during the referendum to deliver Brexit as it should be for the 17.4 million, 52% who voted Leave.

Sure. You tell yourself that. You were waxing lyrical about her before.

Actually to be fair, I don't think she is intrinsically doing a bad job given when she is trying to do. The job she is tasked with is actually impossible. There is no actual way you are going to deliver something that make 52% of people happy as they themselves don't even agree on what they want. Let alone head the divide with the other 48%. So for the entertainment, I'd actually like to see Rees-Mogg have a go. I mean the country is already fucked over by all this, so why not at least let another Tory arsehole go down in flames trying. Let's see just how many different ways of 'brexit means brexit' can we try... at some point the leave voters will realise how futile and damaging what they are trying to do is once they run out of people to blame. If Moggy has a go and fucks it up, then who can they blame?

Proper Brexit means ending free movement of people, no ifs, no buts, a complete stop to it. To do this we must leave the single market as free movement is a condition of staying in the single market. Theresa May has sold Brexiters out on this because her white paper shows she intends to keep some immigration 'visa free' from the EU.

Proper Brexit also means fully leaving the customs union so we can do trade deals with the rest of the world. Theresa May has sold Brexiters out on this now she intends to have 'a common rule book' for goods and agri-foods. This is not leaving the customs union it's only half leaving and will damage our trade deals with the rest of the world as Donald Trump has already pointed out. Theresa May said in her general election manifesto she would leave the single market and the customs union, she has now broken those manifesto promises.

As Jacob Rees Mogg pointed out when the white paper was released its more of a white flag to the EU rather than a white paper.

Yes, there are no perks to having tariff free access to one of the largest economies in the world.

There is certainly no perks to unrestricted access to the shared scientific research of all of Europe.

And what benefit at all could there be in being, by virtue of EU membership, able to wield significantly more clout in trade negotiations.

One wonders why everyone else thinks the Brits are thick as pigshit for throwing this all out in a fit of pique...

It's not tariff free when you're paying a whopping great membership fee for it every year! That's the great con trick the EU has managed to pull over people like you.

The UK has a trade deficit with the EU, so what is the point in being a member and paying all that money as a net contributor when we don't even get a trade surplus in return.

As for the EU's trade deals, they take far too long to negotiate when you have 27 member states squabbling amongst each other over what the terms should be, and as we're seeing with Italy now it only takes one member being difficult as they have refused to ratify the EU-Canada trade deal, it's a fucking shambolic house of cards that will soon fall and the sooner the better.

And if you're going to peddle the whole trade deficit thing, you'd want to pay more attention to what you're saying and maybe not casually ignore the trade surplus on terms of services, which make up a far bigger part of the UK economy than goods.

Basically, find someone other than Trump to steal your ideas from.

I mean, a great example of how the UK benefits from EU membership is the EASA certification, which plane parts made in the UK have, and which allows them to be sold pretty much anywhere in the world, because that certification is globally recognised.

That seems pretty good. I'd be pretty pissed if a bunch of nitwits voted to throw that away because they're terrified of foreigners....

Sure, but what on earth does that have to do with immigration?

I have a question about immigration though. If the problem is all the immigrants waltzing in, taking our jobs and getting all those lovely benefits and free houses, why in hell are there so many illegal immigrants? Has no one told them about the jobs, benefits and houses?

Looking at the cbi link, they’d have to be a factor of ten out in their analysis for the benefits to be outweighed by costs. That’s a lot of bias.

That said, I’ve not looked at any of the detail so there may be a fundamental flaw in there ... but based on a sniff test, there seems to be some economic benefit ... even if it’s not as large as they say (and my guess is it is over egged)

Sure, but what on earth does that have to do with immigration?

I have a question about immigration though. If the problem is all the immigrants waltzing in, taking our jobs and getting all those lovely benefits and free houses, why in hell are there so many illegal immigrants? Has no one told them about the jobs, benefits and houses?"

What are you even talking about?

I've no love for the Donald and, whilst I believe the 'Special Relationship' is often over played it's definitely not over. The military and intelligence ties between UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand remain strong. Breaking these ties would be the defence equivalent of BREXIT. However awful the Donald maybe our relationship goes deeper and it would be just as disasterois, and difficult, for this country to break militarily with US, CND, OZ and NZ as economically BREXIT is proving to be.

"

As for the EU's trade deals, they take far too long to negotiate when you have 27 member states squabbling amongst each other over what the terms should be, and as we're seeing with Italy now it only takes one member being difficult as they have refused to ratify the EU-Canada trade deal, it's a fucking shambolic house of cards that will soon fall and the sooner the better. "

This from the man backing the Tories who have taken 2 years of squabbling and infighting to reach a position on Brexit that still some found so untenable that they resigned. All the while the EU maintains its position and continues closing trade deals.

Its a brexit fantasy world where the Brexiters look at the EU's 120+ trade deals and says that they take too long and arent efficient enough when the Tories can't even make their own mind up about what they want in 2 years.

"He said the UK would be back of the queue for a trade deal, now Trump says that he will deal with the EU, and the UK won't get a trade deal.

-Matt

I gave her the benefit of doubt and thought she was doing well up until the Chequers meeting last Friday where she sold Brexit out. Valuable lesson learned, this is what you get for trusting a remain Prime minister.

It's clear now she can't get the job done and she can't be trusted to deliver a proper Brexit. She needs to be removed and the country needs a Prime minister who campaigned for Leave during the referendum to deliver Brexit as it should be for the 17.4 million, 52% who voted Leave. "

That's all very good fighting talk. Let's suppose we do waist a month or two on a Tory leadership campaign or, God forbid, another General Election. Let's suppose at the end of it all you get your nice strong BREXIT leader; what then? What could this new BREXIT PM do different in terms of BREXIT that would make anything better? If he, or you, have a sensible, workable BREXIT strategy that he or you think you can get through Parliament now would be a good time to tell all exactly what it is.

Generally the 5 eyes just get on with it, and understand the importance of the relationship is greater than the whims of their transitory elected leaders. That said, the low point must have been when Trump accused GCHQ/MI6 of bugging Trump Tower at the request of Obama.

"The whole thing is a f*cked up waste of time and money, as all we are really doing is trying our best to negotiate for all the stuff we already had as part of the EU.

It’s a complete nonsense to think we could leave, and then somehow expect to be able to have all the perks of membership, or have as good trade agreements as we did as a member.

I don't want any perks of membership, I just want to leave and I voted to leave. Although I'm hard pressed to see what any 'perks of membership' actually are????

We pay an extortionate membership fee to the EU and what for? All we get in return is unlimited and uncontrolled immigration and a trade deficit, EU judges having supremacy over our own domestic courts and unelected pricks micky mouse politicians like Juncker and Tusk lording it over us. It's a shitty arrangement that we should never have gotten into in the first place.

That’s the problem. People putting their fingers in their ears, and saying ‘la la la immigrants la la la’.

When you say you’re hard pressed to think of any perks, where have you even looked?

Here’s a handy list though...

http://www.cbi.org.uk/insight-and-analysis/our-global-future/factsheets/factsheet-2-benefits-of-eu-membership-outweigh-costs/

You can’t just reduce the argument to ‘we pay money into the EU so it’s shit. Oh, and immigrants’. Well, you can, and you clearly are, it’s just incredibly lame, that’s all.

Lol, the CBI is about as biased in favour of the EU as you can get. The same CBI who said the UK should join the Euro or we'd turn into a basket case economy. Thank fuck the UK ignored the CBI and not joining the Euro turned out to be one of the best decisions the UK ever made. "

Would you like to take some of the things mentioned and construct anything approaching a coherent counter argument. Or does simply stating that the CBI is biased have it covered?

Yes Trump denied it because of the backlash. Hes stated several times that he will deny truthful things as it suits him but people are still stupid enough to believe him despite the fact hes open about his dishonesty.

All the Brexiters in cabinet and the wider conservative party wanted the maximum facilitation Brexit plan and not Theresa May's preferred Customs partnership plan. Theresa May has made the wrong choice. There was a plan there that the cabinet and party could have got behind. Sure you would have had a few swivel eyed loons like Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry pouring cold water on it but as we saw with the EU Withdrawal bill votes their little gang didn't have the numbers to inflict defeat on the government.

David Davis also has his own alternative Brexit white paper. For you to say there is no alternative to what Theresa May is offering is just a big fat lie.

JCB may see benefits for them. And therefore may not feel an anti brexit stance is right for them. O don’t think anyone has said brexit is bad for ALL people and businesses.

However, If this is our barometer tho, isn’t the telling statistic the lack of other companies leaving cbi ? One swallow does not make a relationship.

Rather than ad hom the CBI, any thoughts on the flaws in their numbers ?
