Has anyone else noticed how the current labour elites seem to struggle to hold a marriage together?

I just find it curious how there are 6 divorces between John, Jeremy, Dianne and Ken alone... It's not a problem that anyone of our last 4 prime ministers have had.

MPs divorce at a almost twice the national average. Most likley due to long hours working away.I would guess infidelity is higher due to power being an aphrodisiac and combined with lack of privacy they get found out with greater ease.

Prime ministers seem to manage though.

I’m impressed they got anyone to marry them in the first place.

Do you think people with chaotic home lives go on crusades to save the world as a way of avoiding dealing their own personal issues? I think that explains most the Labour front bench.

I think you'd have to show us the incidence of divorce amongst mps of all parties and factions within parties (if you want to make a point about the left of the Labour Party) rather than seeking to draw conclusions from four individuals.

I mean, I could draw the conclusion from a sample of four that tory pms tend to have dysfunctional marriages given that one was a divorcee (Eden), one married a divorcee. (Thatcher), one had an affair with another mp whilst married (Major) and another one's wife had a long affair with an mp and said mp fathered one of the same pm's ostensible child (MacMillan).

Tbh I do think that long hours and an psychological evolutionary disposition for men and women to be attracted to those who rise to the top of hierarchies, thus leading to higher rates of infidelity at worse, and a dissatisfying love life are more to blame here.

Not ruling out what you have said to a degree though.

Out of interest weren't their a lot of scandals amongst the tories about this kind of thing within the last decade. Be interesting to see if the totals of numbers and ratios line up across parties.

yeah, I'm sure many Pm's would have been tempted by 'sins of the flesh' or hard marriages strained by their position, however in order to avoid being brandished publicly as unfaithful or unstable personally they probably held it together.

As a swinger I'm not really going to poke at people for infidelity, which is what the tories are more famous for. Divorce itself should be lower amongst genuinely conservative politicians.

I guess the lefties tend to fall fanatically in love over camp fires and guitar songs at their student marxist summer camps. But then it burns out when they have to get day jobs and they can't go tree hugging at the weekend.

The conservatives always know they are going to have a mistress or a young boy on the side, so they marry someone who can turn a blind eye and hold things together during a media shit storm.

Give me a camping trip and a campfire and beautiful forest and a little love and discussions about social responsibility over a fancy dress party were the right dress up as Gestapo officers and line the pockets of newspaper editors to run endless propaganda comparing immigrants to rats and cockroaches. Then later after much drinking discuss the final solution to Jonny foreigners and their half breed children.

SS informs are more the fashion these days. Gestapo outfits are so 2014.

Divorce is very common and doesn't mean that divorcees are any worse at relationships than those who remain married. It's often a sign of emotional and other intelligence, coupled with strength, where someone will leave a failing relationship and the dreams it held.

Evaluate your MP based on their life today and views etc

Statistically we know that people who get divorced once are much more likely to fail at their second and any subsequent marriages as well. So it is the case that they are worse at relationships.

I do take your point that their political ideas are not automatically invalidated by their personal lives. But i think people should be more hesitant to encourage radical change in complex systems, when things clearly have a habit of turning out differently to how they planned.
