Anyone else seen this video for the song by Childish Gambino?

I don't pretend to get all the references that are supposedly in it, but thought bits were quite powerful.

Torn between it being brilliant and pretentious though. Is there a middle ground?

some of it is really obvious i.e the shooting of the charleston 9 who were in a church and gunned down.....

some of it is a lot more subtle, the way the gun in the very first scene is treated better than humans, the dancing, the kkk stuff in the background, the kids recording everything with their mobile phones...

the more you watch it, the more you notice things you didn't before....

i am sure a fan of donald glover at the moment... i think "atlanta" is one of the best shows on TV! he is doing stuff that kanye could only wish of....

I read that the trousers he wears in it are from a Confederate uniform. Don't know if that's true, but it's when I thought it was starting to get pretentious.

But there's a hell of a lot going on in it.

a lot of the "poses" come from jim crow and the minstrel era

the last scene is basically an homage to "get out".... if you haven't seen it then do!!!!!

but yeah... there is so so much going on i still watch it now and notice new stuff... i think is still screams "don't get distracted by the shiny stuff and look at the stuff in the background".... the white horse with the klannsman on it is a perfect example...

It's a superb piece of art .I thought twice about showing it to my kids as it's so graphic. They watched it a few times and got it.This is what hip hop used to be about before it lost its way.

Its a thought/discussion provoking video. I wouldnt say it was pretentious because it addresses serious stuff but knows not to take itself completely seriously (Gambino talking about feeling pretty and his following list).

But it does address a lot of what people should be talking about in America at the moment. Having a second of silence for each of the victims of the recent Florida shooting in the middle of the song was a good touch.

There are so many hidden messages and symbolism in that video.Like all the guns are wrapped in red cloth after every murder , representative of the the right to carry guns is more precious than human life. The dance moves and facial expressions he does are black and white minstrel moves from the Jim crow error.

It's still difficult to catch all that's going on in the background.

That's the point America focuses on the singing and dancing and ignores the violence going on all around them.Notice thosr that dance with him never come to harm.

It’s one of the most thought provoking videos I’ve seen this year. So simply created but complex in narrative regarding current social issues.
