Teachers Carrying Guns

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So, its no longer "should teachers carry guns"

Teachers "are carrying guns"

.

170 Schools in Texas have already armed teachers with firearms

wont be long until many other states follow.

.

Will this cut down the number of attacks on schools and on innocent children?

lets hope so

It equally won't be long until a teacher shoots a student or a student takes control of a teachers gun and either shoot the teacher of some of their classmates.

"It equally won't be long until a teacher shoots a student or a student takes control of a teachers gun and either shoot the teacher of some of their classmates."

A teacher shot a child in the neck about two weeks ago. A negligent discharge. Luckily only a shard from a ricochet.

the reason I asked is that I find it difficult to believe that a teacher could have an accidental discharge from a hand gun for obvious reasons, that is why I would like to read, so I can find out exactly how this discharge took place

thanks for the link, its a kind of "non issue" do you not agree.

.

The teacher was giving a demonstration, pointed the firearm up at the ceiling when it went off.

.

I say this should never of happened anyway. but regardless it did and for what reason we do not know.

.

Anyway a shot was fired into the ceiling and a fragment from the bullet head or a piece of plaster struck a student, the injury looked smaller than a "bee sting"

.

There are still no explanations for this, the teacher is suspended and investigation on-going.

.

thanks for the link CLCC but really its a non issue, you got any better examples

CLCC

that video although extremely poor quality, simply shows incompetence or indeed a set up.

.

I cannot express enough that you simply cannot get an accidental discharge from either a revolver or a semi auto without complete incompetence of the actual person handling the gun.

.

again there is no excuse for an accidental discharge in any situation.

Agreed, but teachers, and also police officers are human, and are fallible. They make mistakes. You cannot eliminate this, so increasing number of firearms in schools, around children, will increase the number of negligent discharges.

I find it interesting that I refer to them as negligent discharges, someone has been negligent and is at fault, however you consistently refer to them as accidental discharges which has the opposite connotation.

I can understand a teacher or indeed anyone having a loaded revolver full with 6 or 7 rounds

or indeed

a semi auto such as a 1911 or glock with a full magazine and one in the chamber.

what I cannot accept is the fact that;

1; the safety is not on

2; they have the firearm in a full cocked position to allow misfire

.

why would anyone have a cocked gun without intention to fire immediately.

Cask, is it so difficult to conceive that people are stupid and incompetent or that they get angry or depressed? Is it also difficult to conceive that putting more weapons in the hands of more people will lead to more accidents?

Why don't you go and find some data that compares the number of people killed or injured deliberately with the number of people killed or injured by accident or suicide?

That said, you have consistently ignored or denied any information that you disagree with so there is probably little point

fucking crazy idea that will only end in more deaths/thoughts/prayers

would be amazed if it gets instituted all over the USA though, there'd be mass walk-outs by teachers & rightfully so

I'm kinda torn on this one.

Ideally, I'd like to see a huge amnesty in the US, and everyone come to their senses and hand in their weapons... but I know I'm dreaming on that one, there's no way that will happen.

So, back to the real world, and teachers with guns.

Accidents happen, even to trained users.

However, no-one "accidentally" runs round a school with pipe bombs and automatic weapons indiscriminately killing people.

An accident, whilst unfortunate, has a low death rate, compare this to the mass shootings that happen in the US EVERY DAY.

Schools are a hotbed of teen angst, hormones and bullying, a recipe for disaster when youngsters can get hold of weapons easily.

Society has a duty to defend the young and vulnerable, and whilst I'd rather there were other alternatives, as a last resort I would rather a teacher had a weapon he could use, than see yet another newsreel showing covered stretchers being wheeled out of another school.

As someone who has handled weapons a lot (oh please, get your minds out of the gutter!), I'm bemused as to why someone would carry a loaded, cocked weapon too, unless they were in a war zone.

Hell, I've even been in places where it was possible someone might want to take a pot-shot at me, and I still never had one in the chamber!

It's impossible to have an ND if the sodding thing isn't cocked, its as simple as that, and also having to "ready" a weapon (cock it) gives you a brief "condor moment" ... a chance to evaluate the situation, give a warning, and decide if you are going to need to pull the trigger.

It's impossible to have an ND if the sodding thing isn't cocked, its as simple as that, and also having to "ready" a weapon (cock it) gives you a brief "condor moment" ... a chance to evaluate the situation, give a warning, and decide if you are going to need to pull the trigger."

Me too, and the only reason i can think of to carry a short barrelled weapon with '1 up the spout, ready' is if you were looking to shoot yourself in the foot and 'work your ticket'. However I will say I have been in places where I did keep '1 up the spout(safety on)' of my primary weapon, but at that time I was at war and the enemy were wearing uniforms and the only friendlies in the area were my mates. So target identification was not an issue.

People carry 1911s cocked and locked because they are single action only. Double action pistols don't need to be carried that way.

"It equally won't be long until a teacher shoots a student or a student takes control of a teachers gun and either shoot the teacher of some of their classmates.

A teacher shot a child in the neck about two weeks ago. A negligent discharge. Luckily only a shard from a ricochet.

you got the link for this please.

I have provided it previously, but will happily provide it again if you tell me you are going to read it.

the reason I asked is that I find it difficult to believe that a teacher could have an accidental discharge from a hand gun for obvious reasons, that is why I would like to read, so I can find out exactly how this discharge took place

https://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/03/14/us/california-teacher-fires-gun/index.html

thank you, will read in the morning as I have to get ready for 9pm drinky poo malt time

thanks for the link, its a kind of "non issue" do you not agree.

Examples of What?

https://youtu.be/vfONckOPyaI

How about this DEA agent giving a gun safety demonstration to a school which results in a rather painful, and career ending whoopsy?

CLCC

that video although extremely poor quality, simply shows incompetence or indeed a set up.

I can understand a teacher or indeed anyone having a loaded revolver full with 6 or 7 rounds

or indeed

a semi auto such as a 1911 or glock with a full magazine and one in the chamber.

what I cannot accept is the fact that;

That said, you have consistently ignored or denied any information that you disagree with so there is probably little point

even if there was stupid or as you say incompetent people, that still does not justify having a loaded handgun holstered in a cocked position

explain to me please, what reason you would have a loaded gun in a cocked position holstered? where it be revolver or auto"

You do understand the meaning of the words "incompetent" and "stupid" right?

There is no justification. People with those qualities can conceive of all sorts of things that you cannot.

"I'm kinda torn on this one.

Go and have a look at what proportion of gun deaths and injuries result from accidents and suicides compared to deliberate acts of violence. 2002-2014 gun deaths in the USA of which 38% are suicides. 6% accidental. 53% intentional. 1% was due to mass shootings, 52% all other gun violence.

Injuries 21% unintentional. 75% deliberate violence of which again about 1% mass shootings.

Then have a think about what the most sensible course of action may be. It's more likely that more people will die of suicide or accident because of increasing gun availability than prevented by some significant margin.

Well, as Cask is so interested in the 1911, the reason why people carry the 1911 cocked and locked is because it's a single action only pistol.

If you have a loaded 1911 with a loaded mag, 1 in the pipe and hammer up, safety off, grip safety depressed, nothing will happen. To get it to fire you need to manually cock it with your thumb, which is somewhat unwieldy.

A double action pistol by comparison, with one in the pipe and a long trigger pull, the hammer will come back, cock itself, and the drop, firing the gun. You therefore don't need to manually cock it and the double action trigger will both cock and fire the gun.

Thus, some people who carry in the US, Will carry cocked and locked. Those people look down from their very high horses at people who carry without a round in the chamber.

Personally I would never carry with one in the chamber as I think it is unnecessarily dangerous, and think that people should be aware of their surroundings, and likely to have time to cock their gun before needing to fire.

Some would argue that you might not have that long, and they MIGHT be right in a certain extreme situation, however I would counter with the fact that if you are carrying a concealed weapon, you would need to draw it before you could use it. That very action could take too long, some maybe you should carry you gun in your hand at all times, just in case. I would assume that they would say that that was ridiculous, and so if you have time to draw, then you have time to rack the slide.

Let's be honest, this debate is around concealed carry for civilians, and teachers, the vast majority will carry their entire lives without ever drawing their weapon in danger, let alone firing. Of course if we are talking about Navy SEALs storming Bin Laden's house, then I would advocate a different approach.

There is no such thing as an accidental discharge. There are purposeful, intended discharges, and there are negligent discharges. Thems your choices. Also the reason why people carry cocked and locked is explained in detail in my post above.

As you well know, when applying for a firearms or indeed shotgun licence, there is no box that says "are you a moron?". Once you have the licence you are free to do stupid thinks as long as they are not illegal. If you have a FAC for use on your own land for example, you are free to holster a cocked and locked gun. I wouldn't, but that's just me.

Yeah, but being stupid isn't something that would preclude you from getting signed off for the Dr to have an FAC.

If; there is any "suspicion" it is the doctor (GP's) duty to inform police, the patient does not know one way or another what the doctor has filled out on the forms and the doctor then sends direct to Police.

.

Once this is received the firearms section visits the applicant at the home and it is only then that they take the filled out application from the applicant.

.

They can then turn down the applicant during this process

Quick check-list to help you work this all out:

So is the UK government thinking of issuing teachers with firearms?

Does this process occur in the USA?

Are some people stupid?

Do accidents happen?

Do some people get depressed?

Do people commit suicide?

Do some people get angry and commit spontaneous acts of violence?

Will the availability of a weapon help in any of these situations?
