No, not the sort I need to be allowed out on the streets and VWE black guys. The other sort.
I'll start the thread that our Scottish friend has been dying to start, but he prefers to beat around this particular bush.
I think the BBC and it's entire TV/radio output in general is worth the license fee and should be kept. I think the cultural impact it has had on our country alone warrants that. Anyone over 20 has probably had their upbringing influenced by it somehow.
I see television (as a whole) as an essential service. You may argue about that, but how many people could live without one these days? True it is being fast replaced by internet streaming, but with a large aging population still tied to it, it has some legs yet.
I rate the funding of our national broadcaster alongside the funding of our NHS. The argument people use is (just like our Scottish friend) "I don't watch it, why should I pay?"
Well if everyone said "I'm not using it, why should I pay?" about the NHS, then we'd be in an American healthcare system tomorrow. Which is obviously a bad thing if you're poor. Same with TV, if the BBC folded tomorrow then those unable to pay Sky would find their options becoming limited very fast. And I would to defy anyone from the UK to honestly say that they have never watched/listened to BBC output. It's so diverse and has been around for so long that it would be nigh on impossible. Even the ones that hate it watch it to get enraged at how much they hate it.
The other argument (again as our Scottish friend blathers on about) is impartiality. As a national broadcaster it should be truly impartial. And as a whole they tend to have pissed off both right and left in their time, which I take to mean they are trying to stay in the middle. But since the Tories won in 2010 they have tended to lean right to keep them sweet. Because the BBC charter has been under attack by elements of the party that want it split up and sold off, as per Tory ideology on all public services. It shouldn't effect it's impartiality, but it does because I believe there are people working there who do view it the same way as I do, and are trying to keep it together.
I think that for £13 a month its output across the platforms is brilliant. Particularly when you consider that a basic Sky package is £20. And absolutely none of that £13 goes to the Murdoch empire. That's reason enough in itself.
I do believe it is a good service, with its faults yes, but as a whole should be kept through a change in funding. Possibly through an increase on income tax rather than the fee. I'd hate to see it get like PBS in America where it has to have funding drives.

I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for the privilege of state propaganda to be beamed into my home.
I don't have a TV, nor do I pay the license fee for this very reason. |

I've not had a television for 16/17 years; neither do I use the Iplayer, I am not legally obliged to pay the licence fee. We choose not to have a television for a number of reasons, but being anti-BBC isn't one of them, I am rather partial to Radio 2, to the point if required I'd happily pay for this service.
There has been talk sometime now about introducing a "media tax" to encompass all TV, radio and internet to replace the TV licence, personally I think this is a step too far, it's just a catch net to include all those that don't legally need a TV licence to boost the income.
I do disagree that TV is an essential service, if a show/film takes our fancy we'll wait for the DVD and pay for it on release, so in monetary terms it's certainly not to save money. I like the fact that my children don't see adverts, if they like or want something it's genuine desire, not because it's what the TV says they should like.

BBC4 is the best channel on tv. It's great.
The person you refer to doesn't pay for anything, they take tax payers money to fund their life so it's no surprise they don't pay for their tv licence. |

I’m not always a fan of its news output. But I’m not a fan of many broadcasters’ news output.
Equally, I know that you don’t need a TV license to listen to the radio, but their stations are funded by the license fee. I listen to quite a few BBC radio show podcasts, and they are excellent. Many contain additional content. Even if I don’t watch £13-worth of BBC TV every month, I’m happy to pay it for all the other content they produce. |

Hmmm, I do question that. While living in Scotland during that time I was an audience member for a BBC politics debate in Inverness, part of a series they did. And nearly all questions posed to the panel came from the Yes camp.
Anecdotal I know, but still. And as I pointed out, when your boss is itching for an excuse to sell off your job, you try to keep him sweet. That is wrong, yes. But there perhaps needs to be an independent panel reviewing and in control of the BBC, not the DMCS.

I see it as one of the great triumphs of socialism left over from the post war period, just like the NHS. And I love how people who dislike it call its output "propaganda" as it's a very emotive term and evokes an Orwellian view of things. But output from platforms they do like is just "programming".
And is you objection to the propaganda limited to just the news? Or is Mr Tumble also guilty of influencing the No vote and Remain narrative among toddlers?

It doesn't all go to the BBC of course - 'Part of the fee also contributes to the UK broadband rollout, funding local TV channels and S4C, the Welsh language TV channel'

Whereas the BBC as a public entity has complaint procedures which regularly appear in the news. So no, I don't think you have the right to complain about a public service paid for through taxation while you are not paying that particular tax.
Why not continue to pay, form a pressure group and try to make changes that way. Instead of throwing your teddies out and throwing shit from the sidelines.

You are right, the BBC doesn't try and influence policy as long as it's source if capital is protected.
What it does is to protect the status quo that grants it's license fee. BBC bias is mostly pro government and the worldview of the products of the public school system who run it.
A good example of this is it's refusal to cover dissent. "Stop The War" and anti austerity marches have been very well attended, yet if you watched the BBC at the time, you wouldn't have been aware that they were happening.
It's interesting how authoritarian liberal centrist types get when their worldview is challenged. Suddenly they seem very pro-censorship. Because I don't pay any money towards something that has a far reaching influence in manipulating the thoughts of a national, my criticisms of it "shouldn't be allowed"....

 very same with the Scottish independence referendum hardly any marches and rallys getting covered on the BBC anything that threats the UK union wont get reported on
They allowed unionists air time but see as soon as a YES supporter tried to get on camera they would pan away so the viewer would see it

A recent Ofcom report showed that under 18's and the 18-24 years old younger generation are shunning the television and the likes of BBC in favour of pay per view online services like Netflix and Amazon. The Ofcom report concluded that this age demographic watches 1 third less television on sets than they did in 2010. If this trend continues then the BBC's days are numbered. The BBC is an old relic of the past which has failed to move with the times. The BBC licence fee is no longer sustainable and unless the BBC changes and modernises with changing viewer habits then the BBC will fade into insignificance as time goes by. |

I've also pointed out on other threads that the BBC was biased against Brexit during the EU referendum and several independent reports back that up. Do you agree the BBC coverage of the EU referendum was biased against Brexit? |

The BBC is as about as neutral as it gets. The angle should be " how much worse it could be". People have no idea regards the power of data. Social media, mobile phones, anything connected to an electronic service harvests data and that's where your concerns lay.

Yes, there is bias in the BBC.
Yes there is bias in other organisations.
Such has always been the case.
The important thing is to know it, recognise it and deal with it. Have a filter when reading or watching that's sifting out the truth from the actual, possible and likely. And if something doesn't sound right, look for information elsewhere.
Don't be lazy- do the research. |
