Well thats another tory councilor been caught making threats about shouting catholics, the fourth one in just over a year ,so has ruth davidson with her policy to have bigots in her party succeeded in making scotland into a mini ulster where hatered of catholics is acceptable ? None of the bigoted councillors have been suspended up until now ,so what are ppls thoughts is secterianism worth it just to get votes for the union

Interesting to see how that (ex) SNP councillor won her case for defamation or not. There's more to that one than racism.

Racism is sadly still rife from ALL sides and the consequence of feelings of partition and separation. It's more than just words or terms- it's getting spat at in the street, feral children intimidating shoppers .....There are many problems but there seems a real fear not to address the whole picture. I can only imagine why but until it is addressed, the words may stop but the attitudes become ever more entrenched.

Sorry op- re-read that and your post us about religion and bigots, not racism.

However, their roots are the same.

Sectarianism..... Celtic vs Rangers and all that!

Many years ago Liverpool vs Everton was the same.....but not any more thanks to the efforts of both churches and the bishops. The Scots could learn a lesson maybe?

there is very little Sectarianism in Scotland, only Glasgow and mostly football related due to historic issues with both clubs

Unionist branches offices voted to get rid of the football act with nothing in place to either improve it or replace with one day later you had a Rangers game on Sky live and could hear Rangers fans singing Sectarian songs cause they thought it was all ok to start singing again

Now if the repeal on the football act goes through with nothing in place in my opinion is everytime their fans start singing sectarian songs the clubs get fined or banned or points took off them

But hey we all know Rangers and Celtic as clubs will do nothing and i mean nothing about sectarianism as it brings money for them and keeps the fires burning on both sides

SNP Councillor Alan Casey. Played in a band at a memorial event for an IRA member. Posted on Social media 'up the provos' and In 2012, he also paid paid tribute to IRA volunteers Declan Martin and Henry Hogan: “Killed on active service 28 years ago today while engaging in a gun battle with undercover SAS scum"

SNP MSP John Mason. Sturgeon was forced to apologise on his behalf for his remarks to those seeking justice for the murder of 3 young Scottish soldiers by the IRA. For a party that claims to stick up for Scotland he refused to support the campaign for justice saying he was 'not taking sides between Irish and British' and when someone, rightly, said the IRA killers were murderers he replied 'You say Irish murderers others say freedom fighters. I support Scottish soldiers if they do good, not if they do bad'. Incredible claiming that a 17, 18 and 23 year old who were lured to their death from a bar were 'doing bad'.

James Dornan has been accused of having IRA sympathies in the past. He denies it but it doesn't help when he's pictured at an event celebrating the Easter uprising in front of the flag of a banned terrorist organisation

Brendan O'Hara SNP MP used a sectarian term for protestants and again an SNP spokesman had to issue an apology.

The idea that somehow these things are all one sided is incredibly myopic.

I arrived in Scotland completely ignorant of the vast religious divide that exists in Scotland.

I have been labelled on here before been called names with religious overtones.. I find it all terribly sad...The question of the SNP having no leanings to gain votes is beyond parody, they have taken on the old Labour vote . The poster above more than gave evidence of this....I am also sure most of the Scots on here know the religion of there fellow workers....How sad that we still have this holding us all back...Too many protestants and Catholics not enough Christians

And of course all those who are part of the 'wee kirk' (an ultra othodox branch or the Presbyterian Church) which I believe is mainly based in the highlands and considers it a sin to know anyone who is openly Catholic.

Two cheeks of the same arse, snp has it's Sinn Fein IRA sympathisers and the tories have their loyalist protestant equivalent.

Both equally reprehensible in the 21st century, but they will deny it is in their party, it's always the other side that is bigoted you see.

They see the faults of others but never of their own.

That attitude is a blight on Scottish society.

Totally agree - When you segregate kids at 5 years of age you really reap what you sow !

And both sides of the Old Firm set up groups to get rid of the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act - they are both as guilty of each other !

The names have already been mentioned and you have refused to condemn the snp like you did the tories. The Irish troubles should be nowhere near any side of Scottish politics. If you think it's ok for the snp to have ira sympathisers in their ranks then you are a bigot. Get them all to fuck I say.

Bit of a coincidence but I see John Mason has made the papers again yesterday re the 3 murdered Scottish soldiers. He's refused to sign a petition from a constituent asking for security files to be released so the families can go for a civil prosecution. He's certainly showing his tue colours

"However, this particular motion appears to be a bit one sided as it focuses on victims on one side and does not mention victims on the other side.

“Therefore, I am not comfortable about supporting it.”

So the party who claim to stand up for Scotland refusing to stand up for the families of some murdered youngsters. Scandalous.

Sadly it looks to be clear where the agenda is here. Most people find it easy to condemn sectarianism on either side but coincidentally the 2 biggest supporters of nationalism seem to think it's a one way street.

This is bigger than football its the leader of scottish conservatives encouraging secterian bigots by welcoming them into her party just to get votes

I'm sure there's a few ira sympathisers in the snp. None of them should be anywhere near politics. It's not as one sided as you make it out to be.

Any evidence of that ? "

Didn't they roll out the red carpet for that scumbag Martin McGuinness or have you as usual decided not to notice something that goes against your agenda

As for the offensive football act nonsense, Rangers and Celtic have been singing these songs week in week out for decades whether there's been offensive bills and banning orders or not. They didn't just start singing these songs in the stands again overnight because politicians scrapped the bill

Are you saying that IRA snp supporters are not sectarian!

Are you having a laugh, what do you think the IRA was all about?

It targeted people of the "wrong" religion , if that's not sectarian then I don't know what is.

There's no place for it here today in the 21st century.

That goes for the tory wanting Catholics shot as it does for Allan "up the provos" Casey, Chris "RA on tour" Cullen, James Dornan MSP and councillor Feargal Dalton.

If you are going to condemn one, you must condemn them all.

In my view they are all equally reprehensible.

Op the title of your thread is "the ulsterisation of Scotland by scots tories" do you think the snp are also guilty of it by having ira sympathisers in their ranks? Or are you that bigoted you think it's a one way street? I'm desperate for you to prove you're not a bigot but you're failing miserably

Can I just say that the IRA weren't actually sectarian. There was no "you must be Catholic" rule with any IRA group in history as far as I'm aware. The desire was Irish unity. The members in general tended to he Catholic because Ireland was a Catholic nation. Some of the greatest Irish nationalists were actually protestants also- Wolfe tone, Parnell, Childers. The orange order was and is a sectarian group. I dunno how but the real reason for the conflict which was the unity of Ireland has somehow come down to Catholic v Protestant when it never was. Catholics did resent Protestants here though because of their abuse of power.

There were people murdered simply because of their religion, to say otherwise is a slur on those peoples memories.

On both sides!

That's true but someone linked the IRA and sectarianism. The IRA aren't about that, some members might have been but it was never a thing for them. It was about Irish unity for them. During the 60s they re-emerged because nationalists (again nationalists were usually Catholics) were being treated as second class citizens (they almost always were under the abusive Unionist ran north) and when they decided to protest peacefully about this they were basically booted down to the ground.

No youll find their agenda again was Irish Republicanism and left wing nationalism. They did commit some horrible acts though but again their agenda was never catholic rule. Anti Republicans were in the vast majority protestant. And Unionist and Nationalist are both traditionally white people so no racism. The sectarianism was usually on the protestant side. That's not pointing fingers thats the truth. Catholics couldn't get jobs etc... When the North was in the full control of Unionists. That's sectarianism even if its not violent. It resulted it the Catholic v Protestant shit but in reality it was Irish Republicanism v Unionism. Members of either group were just usually Catholic or protestant but on the Republican side I'm not aware of out right rules of no protestants allowed like we all know about the orange order

The Kingsmill killings were purely sectarian, one man on that bus was not a protestant, that one man was not shot.

All ten protestants were!

Your definition of bigot and sectarian is not the same as others would use, the fact that you use the term "blue tainted glasses" suggests to me that you are indeed bigoted and sectarian.

You may deny it, but your own words betray you.

Realistically we're all in danger of looking stupid here. This whole Catholic /Protestant divide won't even exist in a decade or two. No young people are going to church. The DUP needs to fall away into the wilderness though.

This was posted earlier in the thread, perhaps you missed it?

"
