...has been sold to a larger company in the US. The owner, Bill Munro, who famously said that if his employees voted yes in the Scottish referendum, they would lose their jobs as he'd move everything to rUK, and then ran away on holiday leaving the press to talk to his daughter, says......no jobs are at risk from the sale.
So......at risk if move south but assured if sells to the US.
In the words of my Scottish friend- 'Ah think ah smell shite'..... |

"I'm on my phone- why don't you just google it? try the Herald."
I did but I still couldn't find this: "who famously said that if his employees voted yes in the Scottish referendum, they would lose their jobs as he'd move everything to rUK"
I've also read the memo he sent to staff and couldn't find it. The Herald article doesn't say that either. |

"You can't find because it is not a quote from him, he did say independence for Scotland would be a disaster.
I agree with him on that. "
Yeah I remember that, and also the usual Nat boycott that followed. Don't remember him saying what the OP claimed though. |

That's exactly what he said. Everything moderated after that didn't come from him, it was damage limitation from the company. |

Okay, post a link or point me to one where he says that everyone will lose their job as he moves everything to the rest of the uk. The Herald article you claim you read it on doesn't say it, the memo he sent to the staff doesn't say it, so where is it? |

The thing is, it should be very very clear whay he never said it. He pointed out that independence would have a negative effect on the business given 37% of the business the company done was in the rest of the UK.
So that being the case why would he sack everyone in the location where 63% of it's business is done and move everything to an area where 37% of it is done instead. No one would. |

That's commonsense and I agree but that's not the point.
The email sought to manipulate his workers' votes and infers moving the business to rUK. The staff, on low wages, are not likely to relocate. But selling to a US company doesn't seem to hold the same problem.
I firmly believe that no business owner, of any persuasion, has a right to inflict his political beliefs on his workforce. They are not serfs. |

Okay, I see you're no longer claiming he said everything would move to rUK and everyone would lose their jobs but sorry I'm afraid he didn't infer it either. He pointed out that independence would be bad for the business, it's pretty obvious that would've been the case. I don't see a problem with a business setting out how they believe an important decision could affect them and informing their staff. He doesn't order them how to vote, he lays out the reasons he believes it would be bad.
Would you feel the same if a business let their employees know that Brexit would have a negative impact on it prior to the Brexit vote? |

I completely disagree with your analysis of it.
The business is an agency via franchises, not a travel company. As such it facilitates holidays with other companies so there would have been no reason for any loss of rUK business. There was no reason why this could not have continued exactly as it was. If anything, this is proven by the sale to a US company.
My point is, though, that when hard cash speaks, scruples disappear. Can't imagine his daughter who put her life into the business, is too happy about having it sold from under her. Maybe that's the bigger picture of the man.

I can't believe I'm having to point out something very basic but I will.
The head of Barrhead Travel pointed out, correctly, that an indy Scotland would be outwith the EU and therefore trading arrangements between Scotland and rUK would be very different. This would have impacted on the business given that 37% of the business was in rUK.
What is difficult to understand about this? |

To make a final point, the sale to a US company means nothing as we are still part of the UK. So nothing changed with the business. The only issue would've been if Scotland became independent, in which case the business would've left the UK market. |

Where did I lie? I find that offensive.
I'm afraid you completely miss my point by being so anti independence. It's not a political point or that difficult, really. I'm sorry but you don't understand. It's about scruples and money.
Anyway, to be fair, I was wrong as it turns out, the business was sold by his daughter just after she bought him out. Was online yesterday, the day after the news if the sale.

"Could I just ask what rUK means please?
Is it a derogatory term for the UK or a term for the UK minus Scotland?"
Just means rest of the UK (excluding Scotland). It's handy for looking at things like trade where Scotland exports 4 times as much to rUK than it does to the EU |

Brian Soutor was very vocal supporting independence and I would support his right to do so.
By his very stature in the business world would exert influence over his workers by his thoughts and deeds.
He has been quiet since he fell out with Saint Nicola over gay rights !!! |

There is no excuse for laziness and sheer ignorance on your part.
“If that (Independence) happens in Scotland we might look to move our head office south of the border.
“A lot of people in Scotland are thinking about it (independence) with emotion and with a Braveheart approach rather than taking a reality check on what it would really mean.
“It would not make business sense.”
