Brexit: Theresa May to fight EU transition residency plan

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Theresa May has indicated she will fight a proposal to give residency rights to EU citizens during the transition period after Brexit.

She said there had to be a difference between those arriving after the UK leaves and those who came before.

Sounds spot on

They will still be able to do that. This is all about setting a cut off date for residency rights.

I think she needs to concentrate more on the finale arrangements rather than waist time on the minutia of the transition/implementation period. Does it really make that much difference if EU residency rights end on 29 March or 21 months later?

She's just trying to quell the swivel eyed loons in he party..

Maybe if she had something prepared as a policy people may take it more seriously but its fag packet stuff..

We will still take people from within the EU and outside of it well after brexit..

How about we give them three months here during which time they have to demonstrate they are stable financially with a job, home and are contributing?

Hang on......

Tbh the EU is doing what it should do. Its flexing its muscles and seeing how hard we can take punches and how hard we'll punch back.

I personally have no issue with the EU citizens who come after 'brexit day' having the same rights as those who came before, up to when we 'officially' leave (leave 0.2). So long as british citizens can freely move for buisness and leisure in this transition period too.

We voted for nation state democracy, nation state democracy tends to involve two nations punching one another until economic mass, or specific trade resources win leverage.

A japanese friend of mine pointed out thatwith tge EU we very much have neither. He also suspects that with Japan we'll also have an import export deficit.

As I understand the position, if the transition period means remaining in the single market then it means accepting the four indivisible freedoms that go with it - goods, capital, people and services.

The EU has been crystal clear from day one about this - you cannot pick and choose which elements of the single market you want to adhere to.

May is between a rock and a hard place - trying to appease the rabid British nationalists in her own party and the tabloid media; and limiting the damage to the UK economy.

Her stance might make for a good headline on the front of today's Express. But I suspect that's all she'll get out of her posturing.

Agree on both the above..

Does not make us look good when we start to try to renege on what we have signed up to..

And it makes her look weak that she is pandering to the minority in her own party..

A lot of the problems that have arisen is that people and companies expect to pay foreigners less than locals.

It should be the same rate for both

By law it should be.

All im saying is though for services such as this a british citizen will allow themselves to be undercut competition wise as they have to ensure they can pay bills, tax ect and save.

Less immigration wont change their price, it might just give a monopoly to those who do stay to run their services

You think xenophobia and racism is bad now, then just wait until Brexit starts to unravel and our marvellous leaders decide it's all the fault of Johnny Foreigner for being so nasty to the Brits, not giving us our cake and eating it

Anyone who points out the mess is entirely of the UK's own making will be shouted down and ostracised as unpatriotic, traitorous etc

You saw it with the conflicts in the balkans too.

All you have to do is change peoples in/out group preferences and suddenly the brian's neurocircuitry changes very quickly to turn a blind eye to suffering inflicted upon the percieved out group.

Brexit and Trump are not about in out groups but theyve certainly lent individuals a cover to pick them open

Voting to leave has noting to do with the fact people have had enough of the EU and simply want out.

Not many pensioners will be able to afford year round health insurance to live outside of the EU.

The great attraction of retiring in the EU was health coverage in the years when it was needed most.

Missing the point Centaur. The reason retirees from this country have gone to the likes of Spain etc, is because of free movement, easy travel back to the UK and a reasonably strong pound.

No-one wants to permanently retire to a country where they have to emigrate fully and their money is worth less. Brexit has scuppered an easy retirement for many current and future retirees. But we will all be working til we are 70 soon anyway to pay for it, so the effects are further off for most.

Want to retire in a warm or nicer country?

According to centaur you need blood ties or wealth - out with commendable meritocracy I see.

"Very true, we need EU nurses in our Health service and the produce growers need EU nationals for crop picking. Feel sorry for the British living in the EU as am sure that it will make it harder for them if our government make it not easy for EU nationals. We would like to retire to Europe sometime but thanks to those who voted Brexit that might not happen.

serves you right for not planning ahead,

you can still retire overseas, just make sure your paperwork is in order"

And that you retire with enough money so that you go from a rural estate in the highlands to one in the States, seems to be your world view.

"NO DEAL FOR EU MIGRANTS POST BREXIT

you do wonder where all the future ex-pats will be able to retire to......

hmmmmmmmm............................

spain... off the table

greece.... off the table

portugal.... off the table....

cyprus.... off the table

malta ..... off the table

they will only want working aged people.... and quite frankly the old are a burden on their healtcare systems they can do without.....

turkey... well brexiteers already hate turkey anyway!

How about the Bahamas, Caribbean or Australia. There is a big wide world out there beyond the borders of the EU.

unless you have family in australia.... thats a big "no" because you wouldn't be able to get enough points in their points system to qualify..... which ironically enough is the same system brexiteers always talk about bringing here ....

You just gave it away with your comment, as lots of Brits do have relatives in Australia so it's an option for them. The Bahamas, Caribbean is also warm all year round is a great place to retire to.

But we will all be working til we are 70 soon anyway to pay for it, so the effects are further off for most.

people retire to the likes of Spain for sunshine and cheap living, perhaps it is good that it will be off the table to most who cannot plan ahead."

The strong will do what they will and the weak will suffer what they must.

Replace strong with wealthy and weak with poor and we can see your attitude to people now.

Besides I thought brexit was about 'showing people the wealth of oppertunity we'll have', all I'm hearing are doors being shut and oppertunity being snapped away from people.

Oh Cask you sweetie

The EU don't want May to be booted out. They have a vague idea of the what it is the UK might be groping for now. They don't want to have to deal with another clown later.

They've built a straw man for May to have a "victory" whilst they do a Norway or Switzerland deal which will mean that they won't have to deal UK refugees when our economy collapses.

I'm wondering what the Chinese, who politely suggested that we stay in, are thinking...

So the Maybot agrees to settle the issue of EU citizen rights at the last moment so that the EU will agree to move from phase 1 of brexit talks to phase 2. Now barely 2 months on she is reneging on that agreement. Anyone like to guess what the EU reaction will be to this? I'll put my money on something like this:

Jean-Claude Juncker 'It was a condition of moving on to trade negotiations that this issue be settled, the EU believed it had been, clearly we were incorrect. Therefore there can be no further trade negotiations until this matter is settled to the EU's satisfaction. Considering Mrs May's record of breaking promises that means there will be no further talks until EU citizens rights are totally protected in UK law.'

Now I doubt this will be said in public unless the maybot keeps pushing because like all Tories, it is party before country, while wrapping themselves in the flag and shilling that the left and Labour that place party and ideology above all. The burning question is how many of the electorate will swallow this meme again?

Central

Smoke and mirrors. They are not a competent government but are a party in chaos, desperate for one thing, which is their survival and - for some - their own survival. They are in dereliction of their duties and completely morally bankrupt.

Allowing yourself to be misdirected by them is shameful.

If i were the EU i would say veto any brexit deal until they get a cast iron guarantee that ALL EU citizens whether already in the UK or newly coming to the UK is guaranteed to be safe then they can move on

Its shocking that she has went back on her word EU citizens rights so it really does make it look like they can to move from phase 1 so it wont look bad on the Tories like their somehow trying when really they aint

Wake up UK they are wanting a no deal and hard brexit there for Scotland will say see ya later UK enjoy that hard brexit or move to Scotland and avoid that brexit mess
